huh, that's a poser.
I think i'm going Bushido Blade but Parasite Eve is a close second. Both really for nostalgia value.

i guess Xenogears > Parasite Eve > Legend of Mana > Chrono Cross

Mordy, Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

side question -- square's 32-bit output vs their 16-bit vs their 8-bit vs i guess the last couple generations but i mean

thomp, Saturday, 30 June 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

i'd have to go with 32 bit if you include this polls no omissions whatsoever

once upon a time i would've voted vagrant story w/o hesitation but i happen to be replaying it right now and i dont think it really holds up. i guess.... chrono cross???

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 30 June 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

16-bit forevah

Nhex, Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

Xenogears vs Front Mission 3 fite.

Tho Xeno might lose, due to the fact that disc 3 is like all cutscenes due to a lack of dev time

Fiendish Doctor Wu! (kingfish), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

never quite got around to parasite eve or chrono cross. xenogears seemed crazy when i watched a friend play it, but the only one of these i genuinely spent time on and loved was bushido blade (i must have played bb2 too, but can't remember what it was like).

40oz of tears (Jordan), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Chrono Cross

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

this is also the poll of 'things i read people doing let's plays of rather than try and play them again'

really, though, chrono cross?

thomp, Saturday, 30 June 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't played most of these, to be fair.

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Saturday, 30 June 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)

wait wasn't bushido blade 2 supposed to be really shitty/different from the original? maybe i didn't play it.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Saturday, 30 June 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

w/o reading the thread

Tobal No. 1 - havent played this

Bushido Blade - brings up the maybe interesting distinction btw 'developer' and 'publisher'. this is a dope game and a reasonable vote esp if you dont actually care for 'squaresoft' the idea or w/e but this game never managed to be as compulsive or visceral as 2D fighters for me, so no dice

saGa Frontier - my memory is probably making this seem more fluid and interesting than it really is but if i do rc than this was a p challenging and strategically deep game. def rewards spreadsheet obsessiveness and is typically cramped and ugly but probably worth a playthrough?

Einhänder - have never played this but sold a copy i found at a flea market on ebay like 7 years ago for some decent money

Xenogears - when i was a kid i found some kind of resonance/meaning in this games story but combat in this game kinda drags it down imo. i think the problem is that the resource allocation problem is never actually a problem, the random battles dont really require much so all the boring layers just kinda sit there, annoying you, while you bash in for damage?

Bushido Blade 2 - lol

Parasite Eve 1/2 - i feel like ive played this but have no memory of it

Brave Fencer Musashi - someone - maybe slocki? - had a p funny story about playing this game a friend playing this game that he posted on ilg a couple of years ago and which is by far the best thing associated with this game

Ehrgeiz - wikipedia: "Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the game is the inclusion of characters from Final Fantasy VII: Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart". imo the most noteworthy feature has to be the repulsive wax doll physique of the misshapen shirtless dude on the cover of the game but idk

Legend of Mana - this is a really fun game and worth a playthrough since it doesnt require any kind of dedication and you can skip any and all story-related garbage w/o missing a thing

Front Mission 3 - yeah

Threads of Fate - i owned the OFFICIAL STRATEGY GUIDE for this game which was useless since this is probably the easiest and dumbest game on this list. the story is kind of mixed up w/grandias in my mind cuz i played through both around the same time and neither made any real sense to me, although i liked grandias suite of meaningless spell upgrades a lot better. recommended for fans of skipping secret of manas first boss fight to aimlessly fight insects for fourteen hours

Chrono Cross - ugly and disappointing

Vagrant Story - this is my vote. probably the most obsessive and pointlessly detailed game on the list so obv i guess.

Lamp, Saturday, 30 June 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

interested in poll results cos i haven't played any of these apart from 10 mins of Vagrant Story which made no sense

zappi, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

Actually the most noteworthy feature of Ehrgeiz was its subtitle: "God Bless The Ring".

JimD, Sunday, 1 July 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

ha LOL FORKS but in truth I've played 1/3rd of these, incl. the "good uns" but Einhander is such a unique entry in the schmup genre, it's the only one on this list I'd go play right now

manditory fun. day (Ówen P.), Monday, 2 July 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

The last couple levels of Einhander are all-time white knuckle stuff, there's really no better *cough* 2.5-d shooters out there, outside of the Treasure stuff

manditory fun. day (Ówen P.), Monday, 2 July 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

dude, i'm just saying only one person on this thread has the ultra collectible c+d squaresoft letter

Bushido Blade is one of my favorite games of all time

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 2 July 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

bush blade i actually thought abt leaving out on the not-developer excuse because i thought it might walk it. but i thought seeing xenogears or pe1 or chrono cross win would be worse somehow

thomp, Monday, 2 July 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

lol, why do this poll then

Nhex, Monday, 2 July 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

because Bushido Blade pwns

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 2 July 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 14 July 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

i finished it; it sucked ass

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

like its really just obviously a bad game, im not sure how i ever got suckered into thinking it was worth a shit

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

there are lots of people who love that game! not that i have any idea about it.

Nhex, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

they're all wrong and dumb

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

the combat is some kind of highlight in terms of entirely arbitrary jrpg battle systems right? really bad beat action button timings + every couple hours you have to stop and look up on gamefaqs how to make the next set of armour

the camera angles + general look of it all kind of work for me, i imagine the plot wouldn't now but certainly it did then

thomp, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:50 (thirteen years ago)

thumbs up to whoever voted for PEII btw
