Names to come from ILX (and anyone who posts to this thread gets first priority on the next survivor to be named). Like Tom Chick* I'll explain my moves as I make them. Also like Chick, I'm playing on Impossible level, which means it's very unlikely I will win and very likely that everyone will die. I am also going to try to play a turn a day (from my other Impossible games, I expect a one to two month thread), though if I miss days or this thread falls into disarray, just assume that I've been eaten by the zombies.

I'm playing this on my iPhone, but you can play for free variant versions over at Kongregate.

Kudos to Sarah Northway for the excellent game, flickr for making it not a total pain in the ass to post pictures, ILG for being awesome community, etc.

*who already did a very similar project over at QuarterToThree that I've glanced through - so no plagiarism intended.

Random generated portraits all the way. I'm starting with the pistol bc IIRC it gives you a boost to combat, and beating the shit out of zombies is really important early on (and throughout the game). There are four different roles a survivor can be: Leader, soldier, scavenger, and builder. They can also learn roles from other characters, so you can have a leader/soldier hybrid type.

Good old typical ilx. Typical just refers to the size which can also be smaller + larger (and huge). I won't explore much of the map before being wiped out entirely by the undead hordes so typical is probably just right. I would never claim ilx is typical fwiw. Atypical. Weird.

You know, good places to set up a colony of noise dudes

We start with these (4) buildings. The police station helps with defense, the suburban house gives us beds to put the survivors, the farm feeds us, and the apartments currently give us 2 houses for our survivors to live in but later can be converted to a church (for happiness), a hospital (for health), a school (to train survivors), or a laboratory (to invent stuff). As per the game:

Farms produce 2 food every day. If we assign someone to work here full time, it will produce an extra +1 food.

Ah, suburbia, where your biggest worry was the quality of your lawn. Nice homes for 2 of our survivors to live in.

Police stations add 15 defense to the fort and are where soldiers do guard duty.

If you look at the toolbar at the top of the map you can see that have (5) survivors in our community (I'll show their portraits shortly), and with our current housing situation can have a maximum of (9). We have 25 food in storage, and weighing survivor demands against production, we have a net deficiency of -3 food a day. Not terrible. That means that without finding any more food (or survivors), we have 8 days before we start to starve. The 4% refers to our chance of being overrun by a zombie attack. By sending people on missions, that number goes up. You have to weigh at various times the chance of being killed by zombies and losing land (and ultimately the game) with the benefit from sending people out on missions. 4/30 refers to the number of buildings we control in the city. 25% is our happiness level. The lower this goes, the unhappier people get with a variety of ramifications. Also, if you intend to win, most of the win conditions depend on the happiness level being at a particular number.

I apologize in advance for the likelihood of barricading one of you poor saps out there in the street when the zombie horde arrives.

This shows the density of zombies surrounding us. There are (55) zombies surrounding us. Buildings that aren't shaded haven't been scouted out yet. Yellow isn't terrible. When they turn red, then you're facing a horde. The apples on the adjacent farm and bar indicate that we can scavenge those locations for food to add to our stockpile. The people in the farm and the church are potential survivors to recruit. We're also surrounded by three schoolyards (not super helpful), another police station, and another church. Since we want to get more farms immediately to stabilize our food situation, we're kinda fucked. Also, check out the AllMart at the far west end of the screen. IIRC those can be barricaded for more defense. Something to keep an eye on for the immediate future. Ok, here are some of our valiant survivors:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8288/7537883416_d6dd1c8b69.jpg

Nhex is our shaggy-haired cyberpunky looking street-warrior. That bullseye represents his facility with a gun. He'll be on zombie killing duty.

forksclovetofu sporting some sweet shades and an old man grimace.

Since I'm a leader character (as indicated by the blue flag) I'll be passing the pistol along to one of the soldiers. I forgot that all main characters spawn as leaders, otherwise I would've grabbed the dog which I think increases leadership abilities. There are a bunch of tools you can scavenge up, though, that do all sorts of things. Leaders are kinda worthless too. They're good for recruiting survivors, which is important, and they can become pastors and bartenders which helps with happiness. In the early game, though, I'd much prefer soldiers.

underrated aerosmith, our red hazmat jacket sporting builder. Very salt of the earth type.

Finally, JimD, our scavenger, who seems to have borrowed his sartorial decisions from Rob Liefeld, has got a bunch of pockets. I guess to stash food in.

Anyway, this is our crew, and sometime later today I'll actually play a turn and get some stuff rolling. I'll also take questions, comments and suggestions - especially if you guys want to help me strategize. I think first order of business is to try and recruit a couple new survivors, scavenge up some food, and start to kill zombies to free up attached farmland for quick annexation. We'll also want to get a hospital soon - either by converting the apartments (requires a level 4 builder), or building out to the one in the bottom corner of the map. Hospitals reduce (and even eliminate) downtime from injuries. You don't want to get attacked by zombies with half your survivors lying in the hospital with broken thumbs.

You can get these guys up to 100% happiness! Though it's super unlikely. Also, since I set up this game after posting in the other thread I borrowed names (and name ideas) from there. From now on though any survivors we recruit will first come from names in this thread.

Mordy, Monday, 9 July 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, and if you guys want any pics or anything - let me know. It's a bit of a pain to take a screenshot on my iPhone, synch up to computer, upload to flickr, etc, so I'll generally post the most interesting ones. But if you want a status update on a character, or a shot of the statistics (the game gives you all kinds of information) let me know.

Mordy, Monday, 9 July 2012 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

so what's the deal with this? zombie rts?

also mordy if you have a mac running lion you can easily share pics from your phone via photostream in iphoto.

also if you use dropbox, grabbox is a great program that instantly uploads a screen capture to your public dropbox and copies the link to your clipboard.

bought this game, played it once, deleted it. stoked 4 the thread though.

ledge, Monday, 9 July 2012 23:03 (twelve years ago) link

so what's the deal with this? zombie rts?

zombie turn based. every day you assign survivors to perform a variety of missions (killing zombies, scavenging for food, reclaiming territory, recruiting survivors, etc) and then find out how they did the next day.

unfortunately, my mac is still running snow leopard (i think?), so tedious iPhone synching (or mailing myself the photos) it is.

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

Mission One:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8026/7539389600_9a32bfc543.jpg

I set out to recruit the new member of our compound and brought forks along as armed protection. The first number on the upper left side shows the number of days it'll take. Beside it is the chance of mission success (with forks, 52%, but myself it was only 47% - forks provided 5% of help) and below it is chance of a dangerous result. Without forks there was a 12% of things going awry but with his exotic martial talents that went down to 3%.

Mission Two:

JimD graciously volunteered to head over to the farm right next to us to rustle up some food for our stockpile. I'm sure that he'll only steal food that doesn't belong to anyone, and not go after the guy chilling in the farm's dinner. There is no photo of this mission order because I am covering up the danger percentages to escape responsibility for what happens next I forgot to take one. I sent JimD alone. It was the right call to make. I'm sure everything will go fine.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7133/7539391486_480ec190e3.jpg

Ick. I'm sorry "Winks" JimD (what a cruel nickname). You've got a day of recuperation and you've so seriously bummed out the community that our collective happiness has dropped 5%. I'm also really sorry about the whole eye thing. Take comfort in the fact that it's going to feed a hungry, needy zombie?

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7257/7539508984_5d9a14dd00.jpg

On the plus side, some positive news from our recruiters.

The soldier EZ Snappin was so desperate for some solid walls between him and the zombies, he just about jumped into our arms. Welcome aboard.

I like to think that it was our pitch about affordable, useful Amway products that really sold him on joining the collective.

This thread idea may have been a bit ambitious tbh. Particularly bc of Nethack which has pretty much hypnotized me. So I'm gonna suggest everyone who wants to play this game do so and use ilx names and post here about it. And I'm going to update my game but maybe less frequently and with more turns played. Here's today's anyway:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7258/7547102452_850c4b4a9b.jpg

I kept it low key and only sent out Nhex and forksclovetofu to the farm next door to kill some zombies. Scavenging was probably unnecessary anyway since we can so easily reclaim a new farm and boost our food production. (2 turns to kill the zombies, 4 turns to reclaim the land.)

Mordy, I'm with you all the way. Hope you're better at this game than I was! I played the Kongregate version for a night or two, but I just wasn't patient enough. Also, arguably, I really sucked.

You know, when I think about the shit that's going to go down here over the next few days, I feel like one eye is a blessing. At least I'll only have to witness half of it.
