Any thoughts on this one? I can't decide. It looks interesting (the destructible environments), but it also looks like maybe just another one of those shooters... and I'm not sure I need to play another shooter right now. Anybody on here picked it up or tried out the demo?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, I don't know what to make of this one; I downloaded the demo, played the SP for 10 minutes and turned it straight off. your little dude seems to glide across the screen... but battlefield is all about the MP innit, bolo... and some of the touches sound nice + I'm a little sick of cod4, so maybe

I've heard the multiplayer is really good but yet to verify this. Czn is right SP was rank rotten, I don't think I even lasted ten minutes.

I might give this a go (didn't know the demo was out, I'll have to grab it), but I think I'm more interested in Battlefield Heroes.
― JimD, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)
The SP wasn't bad, really... just kinda "meh," gameplay-wise. Although I have to admit I really dug the "attitude" the game had, the music was fucking ace, etc.
― Will M., Thursday, 26 June 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)
So I picked this up last night (360 version) and have put in a few hours split between single and multiplayer & so far it feels really solid - I'm enjoying it. The game has a weight... the guns are just really powerful as are the explosions / destructibility. It moves a little slower than Call of Duty 4, but is similar. I kind of like the non-repetitive way they set up the single player - kind of like Bioshock, when you die you don't lose your progress - so it's much easier to keep moving forward.
I really like the graphics and enviornments, which at least feel really large.
Multiplayer is fun, but it seems like the defending team is winning every game. Also for a multiplayer heavy game - that right now there is only one mode for multiplayer seems a little weird. Apparently they're going to patch in a second mode at some point?. Nonetheless, I see myself playing a lot of this, even if I doubt I will rack up Call of Duty like hours upon hours. Also games have been completely lag free so far.

this game is... pretty good
quite late to the party but now it's cheap this game is worth a punt
― zinguist (cozwn), Friday, 22 May 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)
as an fps noob, I really enjoyed it. Some of the tank sections seemed a bit.......pile through and hope for the best, but the ones where you can have a sniper rifle and pick off sentries from far away, I like a lot.

― languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:43 (sixteen years ago)
in regards to Battlefield 1943... I do feel like it might be nice to have a solid multiplayer fps stuck on the hard-drive, but I also feel like, I'm not sure I need another multiplayer fps right now, plus I've never been completely sold on Battlefield. There were things I liked about Bad Company, but not enough to stop me from trading it in when I needed some cash. $15 also feels kind of expensive for 3 maps. Just too many other games right now anyhow (and I'm still happy playing the constantly updated TF2 and would like to play more L4D).
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)
Also Battlefield Heroes is free and basically the same gameplay (and I almost never play it).

they totally underestimated the demand (plus u can access the game for 30mins via the trial) and all the servers crashed, no one cd get into a stable game (I tried and tried and when I got in one it was laggy as all hell)
forums predictably up in arms
maybe best to wait a couple of days w/this one

― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 20 November 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)
Somehow I forgot how different Battlefield is from Call of Duty. Game feels great. I love the variety of vehicles and weapons and giant open gameplay. There's much more of a team feel now too - not as complicated as Team Fortress, but the different classes really make a difference. I only played one long attacking match so far (which we won), but I really appreciated the different, sometimes slower feel.
Graphics weren't as sharp as I thought they would be - seemed like a step back from the first Bad Company to the downloadable BF1943 style, but maybe that's just beta graphics - still over four months till the game comes out, maybe it's the ps3(?).
Definitely prefer the modern feel, rather than WWII. I wonder how many maps the final game will ship with...
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 20 November 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)
... update?
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
I don't have much to add as I haven't played it much more. The graphics aren't as bad as my above post implies - they're definitely at least on the level of 1943, which is fine. Right now there are four classes (medic, assault, engineer and recon (sniper)) with a ranking system right of out Call of Duty, which lets you unlock weapons and gadgets as you rank up. Each class has three or four different guns and stuff they can get, it seems like.
I think it seems like a very solid multiplayer offering, but I have some problems... the first and most major of which would be an overcrowded marketplace - too many first person shooters to choose from - not enough time to play & get good at them all.
The gametype in the demo, capture / defend two point in an area then move on to the next area of the map... leads to some very long matches... too long, especially when things are going bad. The long matches make me feel like I should be playing the game on a PC. The other problem with match length, is that it feels too samey, moving to a new area to do try do do the same thing you just did, capture or defend two points five time in a row offers little variety of experience across a match that takes so long. I know the final game is going to ship with other modes too, so maybe that's only a real problem with the demo, but I'm not too fond of this mode (which is basically a re-tooling of the gold capture from the first Bad Company). Killzone 2, for example, has matches of similar lengths on some large maps, but it gives you five different modes to play across the course of the match - that variety frees things up and makes the game more fun & less repetitive.
Finally, the included demo map is too sniper friendly. I mean, I'm a horrible sniper in every game I've ever tried it, and here I got 30+ kills (or something) in my first try. The size of the maps, the lack of ability to flank and the paths people have to take to get to an objective make sniper a god class (or at least so it seems to me). Wait ten seconds to spawn, run for one minute to get to the action, get shot by a sniper a half mile away & repeat...
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 6 December 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
sorry meant to come back on this - thx for the impressions. I'm definitely stoked to play this after sinking some time into the original. esp. excited to have an antidote to the ping pongy individualism of MW2's mp, which I do love of course but it can be quite a lonely game ;_;
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)
I think the key will be how many maps they include with the retail release. I felt like the first game got old quick because there were just a handful of very similar feeling maps (and only one game type).
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, I've not been following the development but I'd def be interested to hear how many maps and gametypes will ship w/this one
I hope they def have more than two gametypes this time; not that I don't really like gold rush mode
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)
I guess my other question mark about the game, is that at least with the demo it kind of felt like just more of the same. I was in the M.A.G. beta at the same time and while that felt similar to Battlefield (big team battle across a big map), it felt different enough (for instance, three factions instead of just two & multiple objective types), that at least from the beta impressions, it seemed more compelling & had a slightly more unique & original kind of feeling. If I do end up getting M.A.G., I'm not sure I'd want to pick up a similar game but with a reduced feeling just a month or two later.
Early 2010 is fucking crowded!

the engine is just so great; I used to just walk around firing grenades at buildings because watching them crumble is just so satisfying
frostbite 2.0 or whatever it is in BF:BC2 looks to be even more incredible with fully destructible buildings

^ pretty much exactly what I was asking for two days ago.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)
that looks alright but srsly the whole squad system was the worst thing about BF:BC; it's cool to stick together in squads and the ability to spawn off your squad mates is useful but only being only to talk to your squad and not being able to enter games with more than 3 of your friends is seriously limiting
― cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)
I agree that squad talk is dumb when the teams are so small (9 player max?). It might have made sense on PC with 32 player teams. That said, I never mike up anyway (and have yet to have more than a couple other friends on at the same time), so for me it doesn't make much difference.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 18 December 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)
"DICE is adding a hardcore mode to increase the realism. Here there will be no kill cam after deaths, no HUD to speak of, and the amount of damage you can take will be decreased dramatically."
― cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 23:09 (sixteen years ago)
I'm glad I've come back around to this game. It's a lot more fun than I remembered & I'm really enjoying the unique feel. Adding in the new Conquest mode helps a ton & the four new maps (all free) make it feel like a much more complete multiplayer experience than when it launched. People seem to still be playing it too... at least today I had no problem getting in a bunch of full games. I really like the graphics as well - the look is so solid. I'm loving how the different classes, foot travel, boats, tanks, jeeps, helicopters and even golf carts keep things feeling fresh. Definitely hoping to spend more time with this one (at least until 2 comes out). It's a really good bargain now too, at only $20 US new.

The number one ranked player in this game (on 360) has 232,137 kills as of this evening! Beyond crazy. At least for me, kills are hard to come by in Bad Company. I just had a match where I felt like I did pretty good, like maybe I was getting the hang of things, but at the end my results read, ten kills to fourteen deaths (good enough for the third best score on my team as I captured some points too). Since I've come back to the game, I do feel like I'm doing better, having many more matches closer to even, but I've got a lot of ground to make up... overall I've died about twice as many times as I've killed... uhg.
It's weird that the leaderboards cut off at 500,000. I've still gotta get about 400 kills just to get on that thing :(
Cozwn - did you have a favorite class to play?
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago)
iirc my favourites switched often betw. - the assault w/the M16 - the grenade launcher was really satisfying on that and it was great to be able to self-heal; - support w/the lmg that has a red dot site - again it's good to be able to heal and assist others w/health and also heal vehicles; mortar strike is too good- sniper w/the silenced automatic rifle;- and the demolition class with the PP2000 shotgun - great to be able to C4 the crate unnoticed and the PP2000 is lethal but it's a bummer not being able to self-heal so you have to be pretty good to play this class
tbh all of the classes are fun in different ways and each has something to recommend them
one of the things that did bother me about this game: so much hell from above; it's like a prototype for MW2 inasmuchas there are always explosions going off and massives pitched battles between tanks and infantry and helicopters blowing shit up, it can be overwhelming, especially because the sound-design is so good and really accentuates the mayhem
― thurman merman (cozwn), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I've been lucky enough to be gunner in a few choppers with good pilots and that's some crazy fun, but unfair as hell for dudes running along the ground if you spot 'em. It's a lot harder to use those things though than say the chopper gunner in MW2, since there's a lot more to deal with. Is there a class that carries a good anti air-weapon? I did shoot my first chopper down tonight using one of those ground anti-air emplacement guns (I don't know what they're called). The game feels really deep - I still have A LOT to learn. I've just unlocked the recon's marking thing which you can blow up tanks and shit with, I guess - I'm looking forward to trying that out later. The unlock system does bug me a bit - some of the weapons you start with, while maybe as powerful as stuff you get later, seem a lot harder to use. I'm just really in love with that large battlefield feeling, it just feels so much more open and free and filled with a lot more possibilies than what I was getting from my CoD MW2 marathons. It does feel even worse though when you end up on a crappy team that can't seem to get anything done.
I guess the new game is going to have a kill cam? I don't remember it from the beta, but I think that will help get rid of the helpless feeling you have sometimes after dying and not even having a clue what the hell just happened.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)
The dog tag system is really funny (just discovered it tonight).
Calling in a missle on tanks is hard! First it's hard to get a lock, cause those guys keep moving, then I haven't quite figured out how to control the missle and it's already crashing harmlessly into the ground.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)
yeah that's one of the main problems with helicopters - there is no class with a reliable anti-aircraft weapon - you can use supports' LMGs on them but it's not that effective; best bet is to use the AA guns but any smart helicopter pilot or artillery-user takes them out first and there's not many on each map
the trick to calling in missiles on tanks is...... lock onto empty vehicles! or your own AA guns! or missile emplacements. you can then direct your missile into the tank and they get no warning that it's coming. iirc you control the missile w/inverted controls and use the right trigger for it to accelerate

^need to find the ilxor w.the voice most like this and make friends w/him
tanks die too easily in this game. the idea that throwing some C4 on the back of a tank is going to instantly destroy it seems wrong to me. I'd rather see disabling a tank's treads as something anyone with grenades or explosives could do.
also: nerf the 40mm grenades already. I'm not even sure how.. maybe by increasing splash damage? the thing I hate about them is the short range kills. Ditto for Carl Gustov.

When I realized my PC could run this as well as an xbox, I decided to double dip and pick it up on PC - also because I always felt it would be better playing a game like this on PC - and for me it is. There's something about keyboard and mouse controls and really sitting up on your monitor paying attention (though I seriously need a bigger monitor as some of the further away targets are too small on my monitor to aim accurately onto) that feels right when playing a first person shooter. Somehow I'd forgotten this. Also these maps feel better with 32 players on 'em for the most part. I also appreciate the easy of using the server browser. Anybody else on here from North America got the PC version too and wanna squad up? My tag is jefflev13
Gotta say though, going back to being level 1 really sucks, especially playing against people who've been grinding up for the last month and a half. Currently my k/d ratio is less than half what it was on 360 and my k/d ratio on 360 was terrible. I still do have some serious complaints about the game, beyond its completely fucked up leveling system that makes it impossible to compete until you've put about twenty or more hours into the game. Mainly, the amount of people using the one hit kill weapons, the grenade launcher and carl gustav is even more prevalent than people using the noob tube in MW2 and has become even more annoying - I would guess those two weapons have accounted for 50% of my deaths since switching to PC, and I don't know - it's really fucking aggravating. I guess because there doesn't seem to be much skill involved with using either and they will beat out any early level load out 100% of the time. In fact, the only way to compete against those guys is to follow the same route and frankly I don't want to - I wanna use regular old guns (is that so wrong?).
Also the game could definitely use some more maps - honestly I wouldn't mind paying for them. Fuck, just port over the good Bad Company 1 maps or some of the smaller Battlefield 2 maps.

Very happy to read "Reduced the lethal blast range of the 40mm grenade and M2CG to highlight their role as a secondary weapon against infantry." Should be interesting to see how all this stuff changes the game.

yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out
not played for about 3 weeks, jumped on earlier for a few games and think I was only killed by the M60, M16 and 40mm
― ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (cozen), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
It's very cool that they're trying to fix and re-balance the game (at least on PC), but such a big changelist just goes to show you how broken the game has been so far. After such a long beta period, you'd think more of this stuff would have been caught the first time around. I definitely appreciate the support though - it's a shame Infinity Ward wasn't able to or didn't want to comb over MW2 to the same extent, as that game has probably needed it at least as much as BC2.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:19 (sixteen years ago)
played a bit earlier, and I'm really clueless as to how the scoring works - did a full round, got a fair few kills (yes yes, camping sniper) but..... I recorded something daft like 5 kills, 3 deaths..... vbarely any points, but then I had the pistol kills pin (4 kills?) and my killingest weapon was the gol with 10 kills or so - how does that work out?
― problem chimp (Porkpie), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
killingest weapon is tracked for all of your games on tht server not just the last game

mm, got my new pc and dived into steam. downloading this now..
― F-Unit (Ste), Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)
if you haven't played BC2 b4, just keep in mind - the game is absolutely brutal for the first 10-15 hours while you build up stats to unlock better weapons and armour, but at a certain point it's worth it and becomes one of the great multiplayer games.
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
I'm close to having all the parts for my new PC assembled. I'll be playing this again in 2-3 weeks. Out of all the games I miss, this one is what I miss the most.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)
I havent played much since they tweaked the settings. Do people still use all the same goddamn guns all the time?
― mayor jingleberries, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
I actually found the first 10 levels way easier for some reason.
― Darren Moose, Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)
been practising on battlefield 2, goddam the weapon reload is brutally slow.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)
there should be an option to reload quicker - but suffer a possible weapon jam, in these games.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)
finished downloading BC. but is there anyway to play the multiplayer mode in single player, like in BF2?
so far the single player mode is this laaame on rails tripe. or is this just introducing me to the game?
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
Ste - single player is horrible, just forget about it. The game is about multiplayer & there is no version with bots - you just gotta jump in there and take your lumps.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)
shame, wanted practice before being abused by internet folk
okay, will have to dive in!
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)
so i dove in...
and quite predictably got my ass chewed.
maps seem a bit smaller and more compact than b2 which is a shame because i like it a bit more open, i was a huge delta force fan which was my first ever multiplayer experience.
― F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 08:17 (fifteen years ago)
i'm pretty wank at this, but sticking with it for novelty value.
quick questionswhat's squadding up all about?what's spotting all about?
― F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
The squad thing... it's their system, when you push to talk, only your squad can hear you not your whole team (there's no way in-game for your whole team to hear you, but some servers have seperate teamspeak servers to get around this). Kind of stupid, IMO. Becasue of this system it seems like nobody used voice chat, when this is a game where it would be extremely useful if people did. The good thing about the squad system though is how you can spawn on your squad, which can get you right back into the action (instead of having to trek up from your base). You can also switch squads while dead, so you can spawn into a more favorable position, perhaps.
Spotting is great, as it makes it so everybody on your team now sees enemies with an orange triangle above their head and also on the mini-map. If you spot a guy and somebody else on your team kills them, you get points for spotting. It's extremely useful.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)
I would spot the shit out of everything I saw but nobody else does it, in my experience
― mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)
haha i'm entirely addicted to spotting. To the point that when an enemy suddenly appears in front of me, I'll end up pressing Spot instead of Fire.
getting better slowly, managed my highest points in a game last night with lots of recon action. i normally engineer out, because i like to be helpful with the tank fixing and stuff. but i came upon a map i hadn't seen before, it was attack/defend in lots of jungle. so sniper seemed a good option.
― F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 26 August 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)
i guess i'm the only ilxor who plays this? i'm still only on rank 9
it's driving me batshit lately, getting stuffed sometimes and weapons feel like they're useless (it gives me gun upgrades to shitter guns, why?!)but then on occasion i can find a decent server with people who aren't all level 50 and things feel better.
it's addictive tho.
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 10:36 (fifteen years ago)
I still play now and then, but in general, haven't been in much of a shooting mood the last few months at least. I think I just hit level 19 the other weekend though.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
I am really hot and cold with this game. haven't played in a few weeks now, due to being busy with Worms Armageddon, and also a really bad stretch of experiences involving really lame tactics and/or suspected cheaters.
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)
Looks like the vietnam expansion is going to be dlc only. Not very excited about it.
What did pique my interest a bit was the fact that DICE is doing Medal of Honor's multiplayer. That and the single player campaign videos gives me slight hope that MOH is actually decent.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)
Everybody who was in the MoH multiplayer beta said it was HORRIBLE.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)
hah ok then there goes hope. cross another game off the to-do list.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)
anticipating the vietnam pack, pre ordered already.
still really like this game, and they've just released some new maps (which i believe are from previus versions). Heavy Metal map is fucking HUGE.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 6 December 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)
okay the vietnam pack is so so, maps are dull and weapons don't feel much different except the flame thrower which is useless for the most of time but much fun at close quarters.
and the servers fucked up yesterday leaving everyone on rank 0 with crap weapons.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 20 December 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know - I had a good time with it, even though I was on the fence about picking it up, as I'm suffering shooter fatigue - played maybe three or four hours over the weekend, split between conquest and rush. I think I like it better than vanilla BC2. Kind of feels like the middle ground between BC and the XBLA/PSN version of 1943. I like the era, the historic feeling, the slightly more cartoony look. Game also now seems to perform better on my PC - a very smooth 60FPS on high, 1080p.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)
yeah it's still good to play, i was expecting more though - i'm not sure what exactly as i think it does what it says on the tin tbf. (and i really do have fun with that flame thrower)
There's one rush map that's just pure ridiculous, where the attackers walk through a stretch of river but just get hammered to fuck by enemy nades.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 20 December 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
Battlefield 4 announced. Tweeters raving that it should be Bad Company 3
I'm not sure I see the difference between the two?
