Been playing a ton of Mortal Kombat vs DC with friends lately. Amazing party game. Lots of fun moments, pretty goofy, definitely huge sleeper. I probably would've voted this over SC4 in the ILX poll if I had played this early enough. Love me some Green Lantern + Flash, tho I switched to Wonder Woman tonight and slaughtered everyone repeatedly.

Only big issue really is that the MK characters really aren't that fun to play by contrast to the DC characters. And I keep wishing this was Marvel V. DC.

To prepare for Injustice, I broke out MK vs. DC to see if it was as bad as I remember. It was! So, so bad. The MK reboot was so many leagues ahead, as they probably had more time and money to polish the game. Maybe because I'm judging a 2008 title by 2013 standards but man so many of the graphics were just terrible; there's a stage on set on Oa where in the background there's a NASDAQ-style LED ticker with the Green Lantern creed in Windows System font scrolling across. I can't find a screenshot, but it looks like

I played the demo of Injustice the other day. Not bad.

Playing Injustice on the iPad and it's very grindy, very quickly. I've got as far as Sinestro on the second page and already need to to spend the majority of points earned on upgrading the skills to keep pace with the challenge, so I can't do anything about new characters without grinding through low levels (which, because they're completed, only pay out minor points and minor xp). Also not entirely sure what the point of skills above lvl 1 are since the major attack of the AI seems to be to use the lvl 1 skill and power drain, meaning you struggle to get to lvl 2 power in any case.

Story mode in Injustice (console vers.) is enjoyable insane. They clearly spent a ton of money on that nonsense.

I burned through the Story mode in one long night this weekend, loved it. Currently going through the Star Labs stuff, but some of them are just awful... But I keep doing them anyway.

iOS version is an insane grind, but similarly... btw I recommend avoiding upgrading the skills too much since eventually only Lvl 3 matters (they're unblockable) and the dmg/health scaling is totally nuts going from Bronze to Silver to Gold. You need to buy a bunch of character cards (get the Bronze boosters) just to be able to grind money. That said, the Batman Beyond skin is super sweet. The iOS/console version syncing is a bit wonky so far but it eventually worked.

Hate the story (everything at DC right now is geared towards the worst kind of 13yo boys) but the storytelling is way more competent than I expected. Like, the setups for the fights aren't that tortured, the dialogue is actually funny in spots, etc. But the whole "Supes kills preggers Lois, nukes Metropolis, turns into non-skirt-wearing Darkseid" makes Nu52 look happy.

Also you fight dudes.

It's pretty great they got most of the Justice League animated series cast (even Phil LaMarr, but as Aquaman instead of John Stewart!)

agree on the story mode. as someone that sucks at fighting games this approach to single player is the biggest innovation in the genre is like a million years.

but yeah the story is terrible.

love the super moves and the transitions all that. lots of stupid detail.

adam - if you liked this i totally recommend you get the Mortal Kombat reboot from 2011, which also has an incredibly stupid cheesy story, plus a ridiculous amount of death and gore

skip MK vs DC though (which as far as I can tell is the first game of theirs to do this single player Story mode) as it is pretty awful, unless that sounds appealing

Nhex OTM, the story mode for the MK reboot sucked me in hardcore (and actually explained a shit-ton about the characters that I'd previously ignored)

It was torture getting through all the STAR LABS missions. Though I still sort of appreciate their effort in trying to create different kinds of missions, they put into way too many tedious mini-games like "Swing at incoming rocks 100 times". I don't think I have the heart to 3-Star them all. Still gonna try to beat Classic Battle with every character before I put this one to rest.

Online has been pretty fun and surprisingly smooth, though that's probably because we're in the release window and there are still a lot of players around. Maining Batman because I'm boring, but also because Batman is *awesome*.

I'm guessing that Capcom's deal with Marvel is up, since they're pulling the MvC games at the end of the year. All of it's on sale on XBL right now, I'll give in and get all those UMvC3 costumes for $5.

discount is steeper on XBL anyway, for some strange reason. i can never remember if MvC was more popular on Xbox or PS3. doesn't really matter either way at this point, i guess

Pre-ordered MKX for PS4. Almost splurged on the dumb statue edition, but stayed reasonable. Pretty psyched.

the online situation for this is so broken. servers always down, most of the online features/battles not working, tying in of too much single player stuff to the online...

like so bad it's even depressing for me, who's used to going 1 for 30 in Versus on a night, because the lag is so bad, and it's a goddamn AAA game at launch time on PS4

there's is so much weird about this game - like good and bad - maybe i'll write an essay about it later

another strange example - the Invasion Boss.
part of the many online-required elements that is ultimate a single player mode with asynchronous leaderboards.
but once it actually worked, it's surprisingly...fun! survive against an invisible armored boss for 30 seconds. it's eventually doable and grinds lots of gold, which you need to unlock those costumes and brutalites, and which they inflated the costs severely compared to MK9 and Injustice
