We are very proud to announce that MoMA has acquired a selection of 14 video games, the seedbed for an initial wish list of about 40 to be acquired in the near future, as well as for a new category of artworks in MoMA’s collection that we hope will grow in the future. This initial group, which we will install for your delight in the Museum’s Philip Johnson Galleries in March 2013, features:

so quotes in poll text are unreadable in swiss.css. who knew!

voted flow btw

, Thursday, 13 December 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago)

It's a little surprising to see vib-ribbon on there, since it never even got a US release. A good surprise!

Katamari Damacy for me though. That was the game that probably first pushed me from being only casually interested in games, to being somewhat obsessed.

JCL, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago)

yeah, agreed on vib-ribbon, pretty cool. another world is also a good pick.

probably have to be boring and vote tetris. it's perfect.

original bgm, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago)

yeah is there any other vote than for tetris?

乒乓, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago)

Mordy, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago)

I mean, I'm tempted to vote vib-ribbon cuz I had a blast playing really weird noize cd generated levels and the standard j-pop soundtrack is really good too... but nah, not really.

x-posts to 乒乓

original bgm, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago)

another world, of course!

dexpresso (Z S), Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:45 (twelve years ago)

Katamari Damacy for me though. That was the game that probably first pushed me from being only casually interested in games, to being somewhat obsessed.

something about the combo of katamari's core mechanic plus the aesthetics it's working really pulls in non-gamers in my experience. it's the only game my gf has ever wanted to play fer instance and the same thing has happened with a couple other friends of mine.

original bgm, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago)

Man, fuck Passage.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago)

Passage is the worst

Mordy, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago)

haha.

canabalt is ok for a flash game and I get why they picked it... but it's really nothing special \(o_o)/

original bgm, Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago)

no Dig-Dug, no credibility

Panaïs Pnin (The Yellow Kid), Thursday, 13 December 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago)

angry pigs over canabalt?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago)

They've chosen these on a design basis rather than on a "GAMES AS ARTISTIC STATEMENT" basis, right? I think I read something saying that, anyway.

JimD, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago)

Oh yeah that link.

JimD, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago)

Anyway I'd never heard of Dwarf Fortress until I saw it in this list, really want to try it now. Probably before I vote in this poll.

JimD, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago)

YES. it's awesome.

Mordy, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:30 (twelve years ago)

yeah i mean the important/influential vote would have to be pac man but of this list the one i can get most personally behind is katamari

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago)

and actually if design is the criteria, def katamari

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago)

its easy to forget how kinda mindblowing that first moment where the screen blurs and you realize whats going on

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:34 (twelve years ago)

is

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:34 (twelve years ago)

I can't even imagine voting for anything on this list other than Pac-Man or Tetris

although if they'd gotten Marble Madness in the first wave you would all be enduring so much insufferable cheerleading

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago)

Katamari

I hate tetris

Euler, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago)

full disclosure: I never played the OG KD

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago)

fuck, I should have voted for Evony Online

Euler, Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago)

oh shit dan, you should fix that immediately

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago)

the later iterations are way behind the curve, although i have a hard time explaining why since they are basically the same thing

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago)

I would have voted for Evony's evovling ad campaign, which remains one of the funniest fucking things I've ever seen

xp: is it conventional wisdom that the KD sequels tacked unfun things onto the original, because I tried one of them and my general reaction was "eh"

xxp: lol I guess I didn't need to ask that

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:44 (twelve years ago)

We Love Katamari is as good (if not better) than the original, but everything after that one is not worth your time.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah actually the scond game added a bunch of speed rounds and weird roll up this kind of thing that werent in the first one, and the original dude had bailed by the current console rounds

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago)

ah makes sense

oh man, I had forgotten TEMPEST is also on their shortlist for round 2; just pull in Q-Bert, Joust and Robotron 2084 and I basically would move into this exhibit

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:51 (twelve years ago)

hahaha if any of those 4 were on the first list i would be tearing my hair out

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago)

qbert>robotron>tempest>joust but all of them are better than most everything else in the world so

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago)

ha now i want to do my own PO14 for this but i am just the kind of bastard that would slip Pit Fighter in the because memmmoriiiies

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 19:59 (twelve years ago)

how do we get smash tv into the smithsonian

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago)

OMG YES

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago)

like in my heart i know that pitfighter is a terrible game but that is overshadowed by "IMMA WHALLOP THIS RANDY SAVAGE LOOKING DUDE WITH A 2X4" thanks hastings bowling alley

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago)

My list (arcade only) would be something like:

Galaga/Galaxian
Dig Dug
Zaxxion

Virtua Racing
Donkey Kong

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago)

Q-bert

Red Baron
Battlezone
Dig Dug
Ms. Pacman
Elevator Action

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago)

oh shit, Xevious

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago)

q-bert was the first game I ever played <3

original bgm, Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago)

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago)

gonna have the katamari theme song in my head the rest of the day

mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:44 (twelve years ago)

Katamari. There are loads of great games on this list, but yeah, surprised by Passage being in here (more so than Canabalt, even, which is... fine).

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago)

I wouldn't have been surprised by the inclusion of Passage if it was 2009 or even 2010, but just... it's 2012, surely most people now realise that Passage wasn't very good?

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 23:06 (twelve years ago)

more like katamari daminance amirite HAHAHAhahaha...ha...ha uh heh uh sorry

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 December 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago)

what was that flash game where you had to save arcade fire from being humped in the butt by aerosmith?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 December 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago)

anyone remember this classic?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 December 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago)

excluding katamari ive not played the most recent 8 of these.

a lot of ways of sorting these but i'd play Katamari for a month solid bevofre i'd look at most of the rest of em

A fat, shit, jittery fraud of a messageboard poster (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 December 2012 02:55 (twelve years ago)

I saw Vib Ribbon at the moma in SF about 9 years ago, too, come to think of it.

they're missing a Team ICO game, and Earthbound.

And a shooter, come to think of it. Put in Half Life 2, you'll be fine.

Finally, games are art. Tears of joy on this amazing day...

turds (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 14 December 2012 08:09 (twelve years ago)

and no Rez?

"It's the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Drunk!" (kingfish), Friday, 14 December 2012 08:10 (twelve years ago)

unusual details:

Dwarf Fortress is modeled on a complex physics engine that fails to justify its comparatively primitive ASCII graphics

ledge, Friday, 14 December 2012 10:49 (twelve years ago)

could never find an affordable copy of Vib Ribbon when i was interested in playing it :/
would play Katamari out of these, Dwarf Fortress is an amazing work of art though

ばか ざっぴ (zappi), Saturday, 15 December 2012 01:14 (twelve years ago)

Vib Ribbon over Rez does seem fishy, now that you bring it up

Nhex, Saturday, 15 December 2012 03:04 (twelve years ago)

Vib Ribbon was import-only in the US, I think

"It's the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Drunk!" (kingfish), Saturday, 15 December 2012 04:09 (twelve years ago)

Rez!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 16 December 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago)

Rez is cool n all but Vib Ribbon is a masterpiece of 'less is more'.

wait—

the seedbed for an initial wish list of about 40 to be acquired in the near future

how hard is it for one of the richest museums in the world to buy 40 video games??

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:06 (twelve years ago)

some video game "dealer" is taking these guys for a ride i feel

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago)

i'm surprised that shadow of the colossus and ico didn't make it. i never played either because i didn't have a ps2, but a few years ago they were in pretty much every discussion of mainstream games+art

dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago)

xp ha yeah I thought that but they do go into detail about what they mean by "acquire".

ledge, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago)

how hard is it for one of the richest museums in the world to buy 40 video games??

lol, that was my first thought as well. it's like shit moma, i can hook you up with my friend Nick, he's got half of these and would probably sell them to you for $40 each

dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago)

oh, oops, i guess i should have just read the article:

Over the next few years, we would like to complete this initial selection with Spacewar! (1962), an assortment of games for the Magnavox Odyssey console (1972), Pong (1972), Snake (originally designed in the 1970s; Nokia phone version dates from 1997), Space Invaders (1978), Asteroids (1979), Zork (1979), Tempest (1981), Donkey Kong (1981), Yars’ Revenge (1982), M.U.L.E. (1983), Core War (1984), Marble Madness (1984), Super Mario Bros. (1985), The Legend of Zelda (1986), NetHack (1987), Street Fighter II (1991), Chrono Trigger (1995), Super Mario 64 (1996), Grim Fandango (1998), Animal Crossing (2001), and Minecraft (2011).

dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:09 (twelve years ago)

i can hook them up with a copy of minecraft

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago)

it reads like a life goals list an 11-year-old me would have made. "over the next few years, i would like to acquire a copy of super mario bros, legend of zelda, and alex kidd in miracle world."

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:39 (twelve years ago)

Street Fighter II was why I got a snes

mh, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:50 (twelve years ago)

Is there a special license required to display a video game in a public place? I know you'd get in trouble for showing a copy of any film under copyright publicly, but I have no idea what video game terms dictate.
