zappi, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I will probably buy this. although I bet game modders could make a game just as good.

abanana, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

The music shown in the trailers so far is pretty nice.

I wonder if this is something they were working on, and left like 15 years ago unfinished once it was time to move to the SNES, and decided ot resurrect now-- or if it's COMPLETELY new dev.

Will M., Friday, 11 July 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

omg, they finally realized that mega man 2 is the best game. wish it was coming out for DS (or maybe i should break down and buy a wii just for VC).

so, is this like a new old game.. nice.

Rockman and Forte aka Megaman and Bass aka Megaman 9 was fun too, when I beat it on an emulator. what is this another Megaman 9?

CaptainLorax, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

Awesome box. If the IGN watermark were officially part of it, it would be even awesomer.

abanana, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

making megaman 9 into a nes romhack is lol because it's like pretending that 4 out of the 6 megaman games on the nes didnt suck pole

megaman sucks because you guys made too many shitty games, not cause you made them look better.

looks like a pacifier for manbabies.

cankles, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

zang. but what if it's a good retro mega man game??

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

That is actually the box?!? I thought it was a photoshop. OK I don't have a Wii and Mega Man is too hard for me but let me go out on a limb and say pastiche of 80s boxart is A BRIDGE TOO FAR for retro gaming. I'm all for 2d continuity in a 3d world (especially handheld) but that shit is looking a little spinal tap.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think there actually is a box of any kind, since this is being sold only through digital download... oh, the layers of irony.

i unexpectedly experienced really intense nostalgia watching the mm9 trailer

Lingbert, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

The box art is actually like... the box art from the PAL release of MM2, with the border from MM1 or something like that. I forget, but they didn't acutally put effort into it, it was like an intern having a laugh and people being like "AWWW AWESOME" and their pr people being like "wait i ahve an idea, get this on some t-shirts for the capcom staff at e3" and the bloggers were like "PUBLIC LOOK" and the public was like "GIMME" and that's where we are now.

goddammit it's too hard to keep up with changing/changed usernames. We need to go back to classic logins.

kingfish, Thursday, 24 July 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

Both Ryan Scott and Jeremy Parish from 1UP said positive things about it. Ryan Scott said it was his game of the show. This is promising.

I got to play one level briefly (because lives go fast) at SDCC yesterday and watched a few people play for a while (only two levels were playable). It's very 8-bit! Seemed like lots of fun to me. Obviously very challenging. I'm sure in close to watching half an hour of people trying to play, nobody had a life that lasted longer than 45 seconds. But it was also obvious, that like the old games, if you're really patient and willing to put in the time, you can learn to play the game quite well. I'm deifinitely planning to buy it. Possibly the game will get tuned to an easier difficulty as it gets closer to release? But maybe I hope not...

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 27 July 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

weird, staggered, US release dates announced...

September 22nd = Wii
September 25th = PS3
October 1st = 360

Still horrified at the irony that I need a current generation console to play this game

Nhex, Saturday, 20 September 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

The game levels were designed by evil people.

The bosses I can get to have been easy.

this game is hard.

jim, Thursday, 9 October 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

this game really is hard. i'm at Wiley 1.
i wasn't going to buy any of the dlc but after looking at youtube videos of the endless mode i'm not so sure.

zappi, Friday, 10 October 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

i just have the demo... can't get past the first like 10 seconds

s1ocki, Friday, 10 October 2008 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

man, i have to play this. if there's one game i'm good at it's mega man 2, surely that will help?

people get uglier and retarder?

s1ocki, Friday, 10 October 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

I never played much of the earlier ones (though I recently bought the ps2 collection so I could), so I'm not used to how stiff, fast and demanding the gameplay is. If you had played a fair lot of the earlier ones, I'd imagine your skills learned there would definitely carry over. I wish I'd played more of the earlier ones first. I can see the game is meant to be played and mastered in long sittings, where you just power you way through until you get it (figure out the tricks, memorize a course). My problem is I die three or six times and then feel like, "fuck it," and turn off the system. It does get extra frustrating to die repeatedly in the same spot, for instance, or how far back you can go when you die, or run out of lives. I do feel like it's a failing in myself, not in the game. I actually like what I've played of Mega Man 9 and hope to find the patience to play it enough to actually get decent at it, someday, maybe

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 10 October 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's a failing in yourself or the game so much as major shift in the difficulty of games over the past few decades. Games can still be plenty difficult, but now if you can't get past a certain spot, you're likely to still benefit in some way. Maybe you get experience points or a stats boost just for trying, or you a hint box pops up that tells you what to do. Or you go to gamefaqs. In Bioshock, which I've just been playing recently, if you die, the enemy retains any damage that you inflicted on it, while you go back to a full health bar. Back in the day, you'd have to enter a 16 character Game Genie code to get the game to hold your hand like that.

xpost Don't you mean retarderer?

z "R" s (Z S), Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

This is hard. Only beaten galaxy man or whatever his name is. Played it for a few hours on other stages and when I've finally mastered the levels when I get to the end the bosses just pwn me too hard.

I do remember that in the original games you often had to do the levels in an order because the weapons you get off of certain bosses were really effective against other ones, but I'm not sure if that's the case here or I'm just useless.

jim, Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

Having not played Mega Man 9 at all or read much about it, I can confidently say: that's definitely the case here. :)

z "R" s (Z S), Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot believe how hard this is! I feel very humbled. (Granted that it will probably help to not play it stoned next time...)

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't even gotten to a boss! Haven't played a ton, but I am starting to get more into it. I'm just focusing on the Galaxy Man level, which I hear is the easiest. Keep screwing up on those stupid claw things grabbing me and throwing me into the spikes though. They're so quick. I get happy cause I avoided a couple then...

i can't believe i'm thinking about buying a wii and getting together some wi-fi just to play an 8 bit game

Jordan, Thursday, 16 October 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

Why would you need to buy a Wii?

polyphonic, Thursday, 16 October 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

because i have neither an xbox 360 nor a ps3?

Jordan, Thursday, 16 October 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

Such an awesome, impossibly difficult game.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

i think i might try going back to this because I felt like such a loser failing so bad at it.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

i really like it so far, but the lack of continue points in a stage are responsible for so much of the difficulty/frustration level. it feels like you can get over halfway through a stage, die, and get sent back to the beginning. pretty sure mm2 was way more forgiving in that respect (besides being an easier game all around).

it makes a good break from fallout 3, since i can only take about 12 minutes before giving up.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, you spend 2 or 3 of your lives trying to get to the boss, get wasted in 20 seconds trying to figure out their pattern, then you have to do it all again.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

Sounds like a 2D Mega Man game!

got to the end of wiley stage 3 last night and was just too tired to keep going. of course i'll have to start over from the beginning now. :/

still, this game is awesome and i'm glad it exists.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

Dang dude, you are the king.

I think maybe I should watch some YouTube videos or something.

trying to play Mega Man 4 at the moment, damn this is some brutal level design

zappi, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

got to the last boss, but the motherfucker is hard without any energy tanks or powerups. i've been leaving my xbox on so i can continue without starting from the beginning (true old school style, although it's probably going to blow up after this).

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 12 June 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)
