Sniper rifles

hate.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)
Why I started this is some kneejerk internal sigh I dropped the other day whilst playing something, Chrono Trigger maybe. I can't really explain why I'm sick of the sight of that word, it just irks me that it's become the default "magic points" name in so many games. I think it's cos it reminds me of Gaia or something and all the new age bollocks that goes with it. Under my new Dogme 08 manifesto for RPGs, mana will be strictly verboten.

Ever wonder how there can be over 20 games in a Final Fantasy franchise. "I just go the new final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final-final fantasy game"
― CaptainLorax, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)
Is that from your E3 standup routine?
― antexit, Sunday, 13 July 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
but but but sniper rifles are my favorite weapon! Doesn't matter if you're playing Tron, some SW game, Call of Duty, etc. The ability to blast some dude in the head from up to a klick away is key to my enjoyment.
― kingfish, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)
I love sniper rifles. Anyway it's a slightly cheat-y answer cos I said "words" not "things".
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
maybe he just hates the words sniper rifles but loves the guns sniper rifles!
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
I could handle a break from "gold" since why the fuck does every fantasy world use the same fucking currency?
― Euler, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)
Rather gold than gil anyday, my brother.
― Abbott, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah wtf is that about?

i would nerd the fuck out over an rpg w/ more than one currency where you had to monitor exchange rates and shit
― max, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ Yes.
What I said upthread about a Dogme RPG manifesto is an idea me and my son have been kicking about for a while. I started a thread once about RPGs without fantasy/fantastic elements and the idea ran on from there. One of the rules to be enforced would definitely be something along the lines of using real currency that functions as such, rather than a universal "gold" standard. (It would also tie in with our "nobody leaves pots of gold lying around for adventurers to pick up" rule.)

Bottle caps, baby, bottle caps.
― Nhex, Monday, 14 July 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)
Ultima 7 part 2 had three different currencies, not including gold(i think). However, the rate of exchange only changed due to which money changer you ran into, not due to market fluxuations.
― kingfish, Monday, 14 July 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)
One of the Age of Empires games let you build, where you could trade one of gold/food/wood/stone for one of the others - though every time you did this the exchange rate between what you were trading in would become more extortionate.

build a Market, that is.

Human enemies.
"Strafing" abilities when your character is actually just a dude, not a Dalek on wheels.
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
This currency thing, with exchange rates, sounds rad! And potentially a pain in the ass but as long as they gave you enough information (like charts) it could be really fun. I remember in Railroad Tycoon 2 there was a stock market but not enough info for me to be confident in my investments. It's no fun if it's just a glorified roulette wheel.

Critical ("hit," "acclaim," OR "fail")
― Will M., Monday, 14 July 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)
all those crummy over used Aliens marines sample ripp offs 'we're in the pipe' etc, that seem to be raped to shit in any game involving, erm, marines.

you can't walk in one direction and point a gun in another?
― s1ocki, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)
What I object to is the smoothness of it. Running back and forth while pointing your gun at a fixed point is kind of... bumpy and clumsy. In FPSes it's as if you've been outfitted with gimbals.
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ That's not really a word.
― HI DERE, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
i think he meant to say "gumballs"
― s1ocki, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
A word bugging me recently is "sundry" and "sundries," also... it's like every japanese dev found this word and is like "SWEET!" and put it in their game.

Medipack
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
Critical
Wholeheartedly agree that this word needs a holiday.
Medipack is ugly too but I don't seem to run into it so much nowadays?
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)
Sorry Gordon, but you're going to have to go the incredibly long, picturesque and dangerous way round.

"heal" and by association "health"
why can't there be more RPGs that have something closer to (or more extreme than, even) the Fire Emblem combat system, where getting hit once basically puts you close to death, and there are more one-hit kills instead of lengthy who-can-whittle-the-fastest contests? then again if it ain't broke etc.
