The title First Person - Dungeon Crawls(RPGS) refers to Lands of Lore like games. Elder Scrolls like games. Might and Magic like games. Get the picture. I've been pining on playing a good dungeon crawl for what seems like ages. I haven't played anything since 1/4 through Oblivion and before that MM6: Mandate of Heaven.

I always named my guy Conrad because it came up in the random name generator for some game like this. Also, I like to use the name Rooks from Arcana (an SNES RPG I never played). http://www.flyingomelette.com/reviews/snes/screens/arcanaicemine.gif

I remember Arcana being pretty good although I was like, eight when I played it so... maybe not? As far as recent games go I had a pretty good time with the new Etrian Odyssey which allows you to map the dungeons on the DS touchscreen instead of forcing you to remember layouts or keep a hand-drawn map of your own. It's a pretty narrow and obsessive little game but it can get engrossing if you're in to these type of games.

I am playing Etrian Oddysey and I can play it with my eyes closed (srsly!) but I do love a good old grind so it's bringing me mild & pleasant joys.

three years pass...

Legend of Grimlock is awesome. Such a sweet return to grid based movement in a dungeon crawler. It has every puzzle you can imagine, strategic manuvering to fight enemies, skills to upgrade and treasures to find. The graphics look great and you can still play it on an early 00s pc.

If you get this game I'd suggest using the walkthrough (I think it was at the gamebanshee site) if you plan on trying to find all the secrets. You could probably clear out a floor on your own but in general you'll miss about 40% of the secrets per floor. I do wish I was cleaver enough to discover them all on my own but I'm playing hard mode and I want to make sure I'm getting the best stuff. I usually look at the guide for individual floors after I've solved all the puzzles and found all the secrets that I can handle for that floor.

I've been trying to play Etrian Odyssey and omg this game is so grindy, just keep dying over and over with little to no progression

zappi, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, that's how I felt about Etrian

i don't think i can play first person dungeon crawls anymore

i remember as a teenager when i used to play bard's tale for like 12 hours at a time and then going to sleep i would close my eyes and i would just see endless dungeon walls scrolling by, kind of like when you spend all day in the ocean and then when you're in bed you still feel like you're being rocked by waves

so is this grid-based and turn-based? the video looks mostly that way but cuts in some 360 rotating and maybe-realtime fighting

I've been revisiting some Eye of the Beholder-era stuff since I ate that stuff up as a kid and never got to play half the games I wanted, but now I am old and impatient and give up in a sulk at horrible interfaces within 20 minutes. so I don't really know if this will satisfy that craving while having a nice friendly modern interface, or if it'll just go the same way and cost more

I can't do 1st person dungeon stuff as I've been conditioned from years of Nethack/ADOM fandom.

I think I miss more like 25% of the secrets now that I'm halfway through.

Grimrock is real-time. There is a 10 millisecond animation when you turn 90 degrees. Enemies move at different speeds. The puzzles are fun and I like how the game designers pushed the boundaries of a limited medium (grid dungeon) to have so many unique puzzles. Hidden buttons are usually only placed on 2-3 different spots on different wall types so it's not like you have to spend a large chunk of time staring at every wall to look for buttons.

The interface is pretty good. I use my left hand for the 6 direction keys (2 strafe) and my mouse hand to click on the attack and spell buttons. Walking on used throwing weapons (rocks, ninja stars..) and shot arrows will automatically pick them back up.

adam, Thursday, 19 April 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

three months pass...

just finished grimrock. very very good up to the point around maybe level 9 when for the first time i just couldn't solve a puzzle and looked it up online. totally inscrutable, had been wasting my time. and for the remaining few levels of the game if i didn't figure something out inside 10 minutes i wouldn't take the chance and i'd go back online.

overall tho, nicely put together game and fun to play. was on hard and the combat was pitched perfectly, constantly felt just within capabilities throughout. had close to ideal party set up, combo of luck and past experience, and sussed out best way to develop party early. if i could tweak it i would nerf the life crystals, make it so they resurrected dead party members with say 1/4 health but no healing/energy restore for the rest of the party. and i would make resting have a significant impact on food consumption.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 29 July 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Want to play this but willing to wait for an ipad version.

I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)
