I was thinking - it might be awesome to compile together a list of say fifteen gaming achievements we agreed to find somehow worthwhile - almost a syllabus, so that anyone who had completed all fifteen could feel validated in some tiny absurd way, and show off here?
They could be anything, really - completions, high scores, specific things... I thought one might be to survive 20 years in Dwarf Fortress.

if this doesn;t somehow involve drinking, i'm not interested

It'd be like those high score tables in early 80's game magazines, where then eventually realised that everyone was just lying about their scores anyway. Sort of the videogame equivalent of getting a bunch of lads to talk about how many "birds" they'd "shagged"...

the trouble is, to be able to achieve all 15 would inevitably involved owning humungous sums of different consoles just to be able to play all the games. i'm never buying a Wii so any of those games in the list and i'm done for.

I trust ILGers enough not to bullshit about their gaming achievements.
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 July 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah it's not a competition! Like, it'd be totally up to the individual whether they cheat/use gamefaqs/lie etc. TBH I just like this idea because often when I finally achieve something I've been trying to do in a game, there's often this corresponding feeling of deflation which this would mitigate a bit, especially in games that are open-ended anyway.

so like: win Contra without the cheat code?

Overflowing the signed integer used to store your bank balance in Railroad Tycoon Deluxe on the Commodore Amiga is the closest you can come to "completing" it. I did that with a passenger route from San Francisco to Sacramento in 1995. Good times.

Alright, how about being the original Super Mario Bros. (NES), every level, 1-1 through 8-4, without dying? Seems simple enough. I haven't done in myself, of course, but...

And before I get pwned by everyone saying how easy an accomplishment that is, let me just say that the ILG gauntlet of GAMING GLORY should have different levels of accomplishment, besides just achieving near-impossible feats. Throw Mario Bros. achievements near the bottom, I suppose.

Beat a Civ game on King, or Civ 4 on Prince.
Win the Superbowl on All-Madden.
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 18:33 (seventeen years ago)
haha wtf is tofu mode
― cozwn, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 18:34 (seventeen years ago)
Ah, but win on All-Madden on which version of the game? Much harder to do in the recent versions.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 18:37 (seventeen years ago)
Czn, you have to beat the game in all 6 scenarios, each in under 3 hours playtime and without using any healths (and saves? can't remember). Doing this unlocks a mode where you can play the game as a big piece of tofu. Tofu is, needless to say, particularly vulnerable to zombie attacks in its natural state.
I can't believe I had the time and tenacity to accomplish this once. This was when the only games I had for PS2 were this and Bushido Blade.
― antexit, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
I mean, PS1.
I had a friend who unlocked tofu mode but it's virtually impossible to get very far as tofu in that thing.
