the shotgun in half life 2 was probably alright, who can remember.

i dont really use shotguns all that much, mostly sniper rifle or assault rifle. RPG/grenade launchers can get fucked.

probably my favorite multiplayer FPS experience ever was a Halo LAN party at a friend's bachelor party, where I kept grabbing the sword and hiding in alcoves 1-shotting anyone who ran past me

I think I use pistols far more than most people do.

I have a bad habit of using sniper rifles as if they're pistols. Not bothering to use the sights -- just shooting them from the hip.

Anyway, this is why I suck at human vs. human multiplayer.

that sometimes works though. the pro move in the aliens v. predator 2 game was to draw a crosshair on your crt screen and one-shot everything with the unzoomed sniper. i think most games these days purposefully add some inaccuracy when not zoomed though.

boycotting this poll for leaving out the perfect dark laptop gun or similar turret/firearm equivalent. also proxy mines, throwing them around haphazardly and blowing yourself up is the best

I'm shitty shit shit at shooters so I tend to go for the no-aim machine gun everything at all times approach. Doesn't get me very far but it's quite cathartic.

(Although I'd probably vote for comedy chicken gun if I wasn't afraid of being called out for being a massive girl.)

Sniper, definitely. The shotguns in Half Life 2 and Fear 2 are great though. Can't be doing with assault rifles.

my favorite fps gun is the "flak cannon" in unreal tournament (99/04) which is in a strange hinterland cuz it shoots shards of hot glass and is thus a dumb sci fi shotgun

shotgun in doom otm. favorite rapidfire weapon is the nailgun in quake. the way you see them soaring away from you. plus the ammo crates with the nine inch nails logo on them.

Voted sniper. Love it in Halo, am crap with it in CoD. The Doom shotgun and Half Life 2's gravity gun would be close for second. Sucking up saw blades to fling at the crab heads was novel.

i think this might have ruined sniping for me but i guess it fits more in the god mode category. you could use it in multiplayer though! it was Unacceptable.

ah yeah, the category of the 'environmental fuckaround' weapon. but i can't think of another good one besides the gravity gun

Voted 'pistol' because people always get super pissy when I take them out with one. Sticky grenades are good too, combined with a back-of-the-hand knowledge of a map they're more of a match for someone stumbling around with the overpowered superweapon.

Depends too much on context, this. Sniping's great if I'm stealthing around and headshotting people before they even know I exist but I'm pretty terrible at it if I'm trying to hit moving targets. Shotguns are great if the levels I'm in are giving me the chance to hit people close up but I don't feel like that happens so much these days, because everyone hates corridors in shooters now. Pistols is too broad a category, slow reloading one-shot-kill magnum type things are a lot more fun than pissy little trigger-hammering pea shooters. And more often than not I'll just stick with an uzi-style mid range fast firing machine gun anyway, because it'll work as a decent all rounder and it means I don't need to know in advance whether the next corner I go around will lead into a tight room or a wide open arena.

I don't remember which game had a grenade launcher that made a really pleasing PLUP noise as you fired, was it Goldeneye maybe? I'd vote for that, probably.

Original Quake rocket launcher was the best. Because you could also use it to rocket jump.
