the player character from the first game dies halfway through

the guy who looks like darth vader is you from a past life
the guy you're having visions of is your father
you kill yourself
there are two castles
the guy in the intro is his twin
2/3rds of the game are an intentional recreation of the first game

More to the point, has it worked?

Nine posts up, yes.

The one from Spider And Web

Two of the ones from Blue Chairs

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

Spider and Web twist is great. Andrew Plotkin’s Shade has a great twist too.

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

H-O-O-S yes i guess i could steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 17 November 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

Dude you thought was dead is still alive and is actually the traitor who you have to kill in the final boss fight.

snoball, Monday, 17 November 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Dude you killed at the end of the first game in the series isn't really dead, and you have to kill him again near the end of the second game. But is he really dead? Oh wait, you'll never find out, because they don't make the third game!

snoball, Monday, 17 November 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

n00b here lol.

I obvs dig Driver and the GTAs but I loved just watching this game Hitman I saw recently...

What are other games that are this rich in plot and setting?

tbqh I'd rate Metal Gear Solid as kinda dry and too gameplayish over plot in this regard.

Shit this isn't on ILGames... haha.

lil queequeg (peter grasswich), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Metal Gear Solid is too gameplayish? The cutscenes are interminable!

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

Probably not the best way to phrase it, but you know what I mean, now answer the damn question.

lil queequeg (peter grasswich), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

Bioshock answers both questions

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

you're asking for recommendations of games that are light on gameplay but heavy on plot? this was basically everyone's complaint about heavy rain, right?

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

if you like GTA, check out red dead redemption too

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

would you kindly

which hitman game? i remember trying the second one, wanted to love it but it was super frustrating/hard (at least if you didn't want to sound the alarm).

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

I've never played Hitman, but if you're looking for third person open world games then Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, Batman Arkham City, Max Payne 3 would all be good possibles.

Bioshock is a good rec too.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

Deus Ex is good if you like stealth.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

Just asking for recs of games like the GTAs and Hitman in which the plot is well above average. Ignore the gameplay comment. Just cool games that aren't too tasky but also tell a great story. How's that bros?

lil queequeg (peter grasswich), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

Well -- what are you going to play the game on? PC? Console? Which console? Do you want something newer (in which case I highly recommend Red Dead Redemption) or something older (some of the old Infocom + adventure games are excellent - I'm thinking of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream + A Mind Forever Voyaging atm)?

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

RPG? Action-Adventure? do you want something w/ a particularly strong plot, or would a very strong setting/world also be interesting to you? Bc Morrowind or Fallout games are all great, tho I wouldn't say that a linear plot is among their strong suits...

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

if you are willing to play slightly older PC adventure games - those have the strongest stories in gaming imho - check out Grim Fandango, Monkey Island 1-3, Loom, Full Throttle, I've heard great things about Psychonauts but I still haven't gotten around to playing it... most of those should be easily locatable.

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

mario 2 was all a dream

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

I liked the twist in Shadow of the Colossus, though it was more like a slow realization than an actual twist

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

yup yup

Nhex, Thursday, 30 August 2012 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

EXCUSE ME BUT

STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC

GREATEST PLOT TWIST OF ALL TIME

kelpolaris, Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

so good that i got it spoiled to me via the bioware forums before having actually come across the moment in-game and was still blown away that it was pulled off so effectively despite

kelpolaris, Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

Beneath A Steel Sky ends with a pretty sweet one.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 30 August 2012 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

so now i don't remember many of the games i spoiled.

your pixie friend blows the world up -- thought this was a SNES RPG but I can't find it
the player character from the first game dies halfway through -- Chrono Cross?
you kill yourself -- that suda51 wrestling game?
goth dude is a vampire -- mgs2?

get you ass to mahs (abanana), Thursday, 30 August 2012 05:45 (thirteen years ago)

haha the thing is they're so much better as just generic twists! "goth dude is a vampire" should be in every game really.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 30 August 2012 05:49 (thirteen years ago)

goth dude is a vampire could be FF7 too

Mordy, Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

I wanna see abanana's list annotated, I don't know any of them except "there are two castles"

"A Star Wars game with a plot twist" is not my idea of a plot or a twist, I bet KOTOR is rad sure but no thanks

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

2/3rds of the game are an intentional recreation of the first game

What is this a Metal Gear thing?

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

doc casino is right, that post is magic as is

Nhex, Thursday, 30 August 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

it's mgs2, isn't it

thomp, Thursday, 30 August 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

yes

get you ass to mahs (abanana), Thursday, 30 August 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

imo less is more when it comes to storytelling in games.

what if she said yes to becoming his right hand man?
illyrian4life 1 year ago

you drop back down to stage 6. If you play 2 players and one player chooses yes and another chooses no, then you have to fight each other.
syxx573 in reply to illyrian4life 1 year ago

Like, I like how it teaches kids to avoid being seduced into crossing over the darkside.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

what's the logic in being dropped back down to stage 6 though? you get betrayed?
