So my basement got flooded and drowned both my 360 and PS3. I'm crying on the inside. A lot.
Gonna try to let them dry out for a few days, might crack them open (warranty's out of the question at this point), hoping the HDs are salvagable, but it's unlikely. They were sunk in almost two feet of mud, water and a smidge of backed-up sewage. I still have to clean the mud off the controllers I left on the floor as well as all the cables.
Really crazy freak event, it was a flash flood that lasted maybe an hour or two, yet nothing like this came even close to happening during Hurricane Irene or Sandy, when I lost power for a week.
It's the loss of the save data that's killing me though - definitely should have backed them up to the cloud at some point.
So, any advice on rescuing these things, or am I just completely screwed?

Sorry no advice from me but I'm curious which saves you're saddest about losing? I've thought about uploading everything to the cloud but it seemed like such a pain and I can't think offhand of any saves I'd be particularly crushed to lose.

Mostly single player adventures that I stopped and planned to go back to finish or New Game+, and multiplayer games like Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/Injustice where I spent countless hours to unlock stages/costumes/characters/etc. My NBA and NHL careers.. so many hours. At the moment I was about 25 hours into Deus Ex: Human Revolution, about 80-90% through that game, so close to the end... that one really stings. And there are tons of others I can't even remember right now. Do I really want to struggle through unlocking those Spelunky shortcuts again...
I don't think I'll upload everything to the cloud in the future, but just once in a while I'll copy the saves over in case something like this happens

oh man that sounds terrible :( do you have PS+? cos i think it backs up saves to the cloud automatically, haven't really investigated this properly myself though.my Vita stopped charging so had to send it to Sony for repair nearly three weeks ago. called them up today to find out what was happening and they've somehow lost it *facepalm*

i want to say if it's just a bit of water that got in, there's a good chance it will be fine when dried out.

both consoles were completely caked in mud, totally submerged, so... no :( still trying to figure how i can get some of that dirt out without cracking open the case
I do have PS+, so that is definitely a relief that at least some of my saves aren't gone forever. i've only had the PS3 for six months though and I'm still play mostly on 360, so it wasn't as much of a loss on that side

sorry nhex, saying a prayer for you

i wonder if it might still work enough to be playable. probably the disc readers would be kaput but maybe stuff on HD would be OK?

Harddrives are air-tight I believe.

I can now tell you it is not, at least for the 360. At least, not the housing container for the drive, as I pulled it out today and shook some water out. Had to do the same with the power brick. PS3 HD looked pretty untouched, thankfully. It feels like there's a lot less parts in the PS3, or everything's just a lot lighter; no power brick, for instance. Gives me more hope for that system, but i know a ribbon on the disc drive got wet, I poured a decent amount of liquid out from that opening. Still waiting a little more before plugging anything in. http://i.imgur.com/BoQwfZB.jpg

yeah, with ps+ if you ever answered yes when it asked you if you wanted to save to the cloud when you first started playing the game, that stuff should be safe.

Dead, all dead, all dead. Time to go through the repair process. It's been suggested to me to wait for the next generation or join the PC master race, but the time and money investment I've already sunk into both machines...
I did a paperclip force eject on the 360 to get my Deus Ex disc out, and the tray and disc were slathered in mud... yeah, it's toast

Sorry dude.

It's probably not much consolation but I have dozens of these, and in my heart I know I'll never actually return to any of them. There'll always be newer games taking precedence and soon enough whole new consoles taking precedence etc.

I appreciate the well wishes in my time of heartbreak

Update: So by some miracle, my 360 HD was intact! (note: by procedure i only sent in the console minus the HD/power supply which was completely toast) I sent in the machine for repair, they cleaned out the insides and sent it back and everything's working again. I'm still paranoid that the HD will fail at any moment, but I was able to copy all my saves to the cloud. been running the 360 for a few days now, leaving it on for a while to make sure it's all good. Still can't believe the HD is OK after I poured out all that water. (look again at that picture up there!) My sense of relief is incalculable. I want to buy ILG a beer.

Ha, fantastic.
(Also heh, my previous post turned out to be bollocks, I went back to Arkham Asylum this weekend after putting it down over a year ago).
