tcgs in the new digital age: hearthstone, infinity wars, hex shards of fate, faeria, more

this is a legit trend now. i've enjoyed hearthstone + i'm kinda obsessed w/ infinity wars (deep strategy, great draft format, f2p and i haven't spent a dime on the game). other games to come. card hunter kinda fits into this paradigm, tho it's single player only i think? hex looks cool. faeria looks cool.

definitely try out infinity wars - it's got some good strategic & placement depth and i think the theme is rad. there are 6 pretty well-balanced factions. um, if u do try it, use my invite code: D0202 -- i haven't noticed any rewards for invites (maybe my ppl haven't stayed long enough) but it does auto-friend add you to the inviting account and apparently there are rewards for playing matches against the person who invited u + stuff like that. i haven't explored it much. i've mostly been obsessed w/ drafting.

anyway, feel free to use this thread to discuss any of these tcgs and any other i haven't mentioned yet (i'm sure MTGO gets plenty of chatter in the MTG thread but it could slot in here too).

I'd never played anything like this until I started on Hearthstone a couple of weeks ago, I'm pretty dreadful at it but there's definitely something hooky about it, I still feel drawn back to it pretty often even though I'm losing probably 4 games out of 5.

I have watched people play hearthstone and it seems really simplistic and boring

i don't think it's as good as infinity wars but it has some interesting complexity imho

i love how in infinity wars if you can go 4 wins before reaching 3 losses you're guaranteed to recoup your draft investment. it makes draft so much fun since 4 wins is not that hard to get to (my highest number of wins before 3 losses was 13) - the more times you win the more IP (that's the in game currency you use to play draft and buy booster packs) you get. also you get a chance at winning better cards (if you get to 9 wins you are guaranteed one rare). you also get the chance to buy your draft deck for keeps after finishing the draft. Normally this is prohibitively expensive but apparently if you get to 29 or 30 wins in a draft it becomes free. so something to work towards.

one year passes...

hey Mordy, did you stick w/any of those?

Been playing a bit of the beta of Duelyst, which combines yr TCG stuff with a Final Fantasy Tactics/Ogre Battle style board. Gauntlet/draft is p.fun, as are the puzzles.

not so much anymore tho i played infinity wars until i was occasionally winning my entire draft deck. i tried hearthstone but found it too simple and boring. still interested in trying shards of fate

three years pass...

i started playing mtg with new set of friends who i met thru my gf (going against stereotypes these people are all younger and hipper than i, who would have scoffed at magic in the past) and have also gotten addicted to hearthstone in the last few days. i played about 5 hours yesterday

i don't find hearthstone too simple, there's def a steep learning curve when you start playing against better players. I'm playing a priest control deck, but i don't have a lot of the better cards that i really need to pull that off yet.

i also like that you just accrue mana each round, have lost a few mtg games from drawing too much, or too little land, which is annoyingly luck-based

still addicted to this game, i kind of suck. i had a control priest going for a while and was doing very well but then i feel like i won so many games my rank went up a bunch and then i just got owned repeatedly.

wish mtg would put their app out for the mac

Mordy, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 16:24 (five years ago)

or maybe i don't wish that since as long as they don't i don't have to spend money on it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mordy, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 16:25 (five years ago)

agree
