running is good, basketball is nothing like running, its more like... plyo

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 April 2015 14:30 (nine years ago) link

started playing again for first time since hs/before prompted by a dude at work who is trying to get people together for pickups. Lots of good park spots near me to find games but need a lot of work on my shot and handles. busted up my ankle a few yrs ago playing rugby so i am trying to preempt what seems like an inevitable exacerbation.

Felt like i got hit by a truck after my first pickup though lol. tons of fun

otm. boxing out and rebounding is some exhausting shit that no amount of running will prepare you for.

Heez, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:04 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:12 (nine years ago) link

xp it's true. In hs, I'd tell my coach that cross-country was for staying in basketball shape. But cross-country is more for staying in hanging out with buddies and/or smoking weed shape.

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 April 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

yeah the physicality of basket ball is basically the reason i quit playing. so many back injuries. doesn't help that i'm a slightly big dude who always gets matched with like a former tight end out of clemson

Heez, Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:14 (nine years ago) link

i know how to spell basketball btw

Heez, Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:15 (nine years ago) link

you just don't even like the physicality involved in pushing the 'basket' and the 'ball' together

Bookmark No Bingus Permalink (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:22 (nine years ago) link

sucks to be paired with the best former all star tight end out of clemson, I agree

Bookmark No Bingus Permalink (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:24 (nine years ago) link

the dude wasn't even that good... just huge.

guys I feel you on the getting old/it's a rough game thing...but I play with a guy who is 75!! Granted he sits out if we run full and he leaves after an hour or so but still

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 23 April 2015 22:39 (nine years ago) link

75 is old wow, played with plenty of 50 year olds over the years but never 70s.

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 23 April 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link

he's 6'4" with a wide frame, just sets mean picks and hits the flatfoot short shots. plays in tournaments where often there's no other teams in his age group so he has to play vs the "young" guys ie dudes in their 60s. one of his tourney teammates is an ex globetrotter.

last week this 23 yr old stud dominated (6'3", great shooter, crafty finisher, good handles, excellent vision). I wanted to switch onto him but kinda felt like it'd be a dick move to basically tell my teammate he can't guard him, step aside. He still will hit 3's in my eye but I don't let him waltz into the paint like my teammate was allowing him to. Will have to just check him from the getgo so the awkward "step aside" moment doesn't happen.

Maybe he was too proud to ask for a switch but would've welcomed your suggestion as a way to save face!

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Thursday, 23 April 2015 23:43 (nine years ago) link

ha I've been on the other end of that before when having to guard bigger/taller guys. "yes please, you try dealing with this beast". lack of 3 second rule really puts you at their mercy sometimes.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 23 April 2015 23:50 (nine years ago) link

So last night I made sure to check the young stud mentioned above...and 1st play he blows by me for a layup haha. But think he only got 1 other layup that wasn't after someone else switching onto him and my team won 3 out of 4 games so hooray.
We get to play indoors once or twice a week because this guy's wife is the school principal, but she resigned effective next school year so don't know if we can keep hooping there :(((

lag∞n, Friday, 24 April 2015 22:49 (nine years ago) link

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 24 April 2015 22:53 (nine years ago) link

Spottie, Saturday, 11 July 2015 02:37 (nine years ago) link

I played 3 on 3 today w/ my brothers, my brother in law, and my nephew, it was dope, so so so much fun. I hadn't played in years so I am super sore right now but overall I was very satisfied with how I played. my jumpshot could've been way better but I was a monster on defense imho

fwiw it def missed some courts but pretty amazing work overall, also great to see how many courts have high quality backboards/rims/nets now after years of dealing with the evil handmade parks departments set ups

agree w the assessment?

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

the courts r not numbered?

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:40 (nine years ago) link

yeah! the courts and hoops themselves are pretty shitty but it's always packed, which can be a good or bad thing

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

lagoon if you do "show all" it ranks them in order of overall score. then if you click on the name of the court it will tell you what the rank is. seth low park in bensonhurst is #32

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

ah thx, they shdve listed the rank in the table, what am i supposed to do count over here what the heck

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link

bb park courts r truly stunning btw worth the 100

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link
