i'm the type that gives people shit for not playing good d. i'm sorry it's unacceptable
― Heez, Sunday, 10 April 2016 03:26 (eight years ago) link
there was a dude playing zero D today and he was on my team and we got destroyed then we switched teams and i roasted him
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 April 2016 03:27 (eight years ago) link
i don't remember many details but let's just pretend that i was like "hey there superstar, i bet you're exhausted, but why doncha try THIS on for size??" before shooting with both hands and gaining a commanding 5 to 3 lead with only 3 shots to go.
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 10 April 2016 03:28 (eight years ago) link
was this a school sanctioned tournament or just something that was happening on the playground or what
― lag∞n, Sunday, 10 April 2016 03:29 (eight years ago) link
school sanctioned lunch tournament, so all of the players who were also into eating lunch didn't participate
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 10 April 2016 03:30 (eight years ago) link
but i knew that sometimes excellence requires sacrifice
fools eating lunch when they cldve been launching threes smh

I was nearly 6' when I was 17 (now I am only a bit over 5'10" - old age shrinkage) but I have always had tiny hands. Even when I could almost jump high enough to rise above the rim, there was no way my hands were big enough to grasp and control the ball for a dunk. It would fly off my hand comically. Plus, I wasn't especially quick. I concentrated on playing good defensive position, moving my feet and boxing out on rebounds, and that was the strong part of my game.

It's crazy how far basic sound fundamentals will get you in pick up ball

there's a 7fter who plays with us now. luckily he's slow so when he rotates to shot block your layup/teardrop, just have to give eyebrow fake and spring to other side of the hoop and bam wide open layup.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link
that is extremely tall
― lag∞n, Monday, 11 April 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link
yeah pretty ridic to see him playing with all rest of us 6'3" and under. 6'5" ex-college player returns in July, looking forward to that matchup.

I think it was an article linked here on ILH that said that some amazingly high percentage of all the 7 ft. and above men in the USA had been under contract in the NBA at some point in their lives. I expect this probably did not include extremely slow 7fters.
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link
He claims he played D1 for a time but we are skeptical. Tho there are some schools that are D1 that are basically at D2 level quality of play, eg NAU up the road from me.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:47 (eight years ago) link
sort of feel like if you're 7 feet tall and haven't played at a really high level you're probably a klutz
― k3vin k., Monday, 11 April 2016 18:54 (eight years ago) link
Aye. Plus dude is in town for rehab so whatever habit he had couldn't have helped...

i'm 6'9 and gave up on serious ball in high school because i was too slow. now i kinda regret not trying harder but being a giant definitely doesn't automatically make you good
― ciderpress, Monday, 11 April 2016 19:18 (eight years ago) link
I played a very short game of 2-on-2 with some other fat randos yesterday and it was really fun. I made zero (0) shots.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 11 April 2016 19:21 (eight years ago) link
I did set a ton of screens and got a few blocks and steals though.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 11 April 2016 19:27 (eight years ago) link
Nice. The shots will fall eventually. I changed my shot from more overhead to a "thru the nose" curry type release. Def helps with the consistency for me.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 11 April 2016 22:50 (eight years ago) link
All of my shots landed within the cylinder so I felt okay about it. Even when I played a lot I was never much of a shooter.

what are the best workout programs for getting in shape for bball? I haven't been playing much but I'd like to show up a little for the annual office game in July. Been doing the gym 3x per week and running maybe 1x per week, but mostly lifting.
― a man a plan alive (man alive), Monday, 30 May 2016 02:48 (eight years ago) link
idk, probably worth running at least a couple times a week though.

― lag∞n, Monday, 30 May 2016 03:38 (eight years ago) link
just dribble the ball through your legs a bunch and you're good to go
― ciderpress, Monday, 30 May 2016 03:42 (eight years ago) link
Def gotta run and get your endurance up. I would do box jumps, squats, calf lifts. For upper body focus on shoulders imo cos you do lots of arms up on D and calling for the ball and what not. When I was in my best Bball shape I was doing lots of sprints and also playing lots of racquetball. But really the best way to get in ball shape is just to play a lot. In college I would play 3 hours a night no problem.

the best workout for playing basketball is playing basketball!!
― k3vin k., Monday, 30 May 2016 03:58 (eight years ago) link
go to the Y and jump in a few pickup games. if you haven't played in a while, you'll be shocked at how fast you get gassed. basketball stamina is a whole nother thing
i played a pickup game recently and had trouble getting around for a couple of days but also im 30 and not really a champion of physical fitness generally

also if you're gonna be playing more, I recently made the switch from cotton socks to Nike HyperElite socks and they have legit changed my life. They're normally like $15-$20 a pair which his insane but the nike outlet had some weird colorways for like half that and I had a gift card so I bought like 10 pair. Best socks I've ever worn.http://weartesters.com/introducing-the-nike-hyper-elite-basketball-crew-socks/
