i love the basketball jones/the starters weekly pod, but I could understand if it is way too silly for some. Road trippin is occasionally entertaining. The Ringer's NBA pods should be much better than they are. Give Shea Serrano a podcast, simmons!

I fully admit to watching the starters daily nba tv show most days please do not ban me

lol those guys are living the life props to them for turning hoops fandom into a career. havent really listened to them since the TBJ days, I follow them all on twitter tho.

i can only (sporadically) get into the tv show around all-star game and playoffs, but yeah they are inspirations

I mostly like the constant dunking on leigh ellis and his constant Dad ways

my fav hoops pod rn is brian windhorst's espn pod w/ the other espn basketball ppl. it's basically the old truehoop podcast but w/ all good/smart writers and no "personalities" like amin or the more talk radio-ish guys that used to be on the truehoop pods. windhorst is kind of a garbage writer but as a moderator of conversation he's good bcuz he is very very knowledgeable about the league.

i listen to it cause brian is good but i actually hate the combinations of guests who rarely seem to have any chemistry. other than bontemps whose grumpiness i enjoy they can be a drag.

it's a little worse now bcuz jackie macmullan is out... sometimes it's a weird crew. kirk goldsberry in partic is not very good.

yeah he's awful.

windy is cool enough. he knows a lot for sure, seems really plugged in. i havent listened to his pod recently ill get back into it. dude lacks any sense of humor tho.

windy has a sense of humor but like any good midwesterner it's extremely dry.

that show is really and truly wretched... jalen actually is prob the only good one

honestly i really enjoyed scott van pelt's coverage of game 5 on his special edition of sportscenter they should just give postgame to him

Via sources: TNT will no longer air the Players Only NBA broadcast. Turner Sports will likely do some Players Only content but as far as games for the 2019-20 season, the Players Only broadcast on TNT is no more.

i did enjoy some players only broadcasts but when it was bad it was insufferable... they also did it too often. would've liked to see them tweak a bit but oh well

yah you both are otm. kinda wish they tried to hone it to a good spot and adapt it rather than dump it completely but the naysayers were pretty harsh on it from the start.

my passing speculation is what if they asked him to take up more of a newsbreaker role and he said no thanks. his tribute to woj on his pod was a story about how he asked woj to break some news he had gotten because he was busy with his family and that was never a concern with woj.

have to admit i will miss the high comedy of listening to lowe repeat perk's opinions on the pod and get tongue-tied trying to make them make sense. i may or may not have stockholm syndrome

it does feel generally speaking that any desire to producer/consume analysis of culture, sports etc that isn’t people speaking vapidly ior overly emoting in front of a camera is rapidly dwindling

yeah i think i can name about 65-70% of them

would be interesting if he goes to the ringer if he'd just jump on with simmons and russillo or have his own thing with simmons

that tiering of his guests does not sit right with my spirit

i feel like basically every media company be it in journalism or podcasting or whatever that covers basketball will at least want to have a conversation w/ him, so i think it will depend on what he actually wants to do i.e. does he want the balance between writing and podcasting and video to be different than it was at ESPN? does he like the stability of a salary or is he willing to do something on his own? if i was him i would do a deal w/ a podcast company and then have a substack or patreon type situation for my columns + subscriber only pods. but some people do like working for institutions. curious to see what he does but i don't think his work is going to get any worse, if anything it should get better. so i feel for zach but looking forward to his next chapter

it does seem like the ringer would be the natural spot, he’s elevate their NBA coverage significantly and he’s BFFs with simmons already, and it would be a good spot to keep his podcast visible. though I really doubt they’d be able to afford his market rate

ringer is owned by spotify and bill simmons has some executive podcast title there, spotify is the biggest spender in the space hell prob end up there if they feel like paying him

yeah a lot of it depends on what kinda money is out there for him. if he was making 7+ figures then the thing nobody knows is how much of a haircut he is willing to take. i think if he wanted to maximize his potential earnings he wouldn't take a salaried position and would instead sell a podcast and keep side income avenues open but maybe i'm wrong. perhaps the athletic has the checkbook, idk. also possible the ringer has set ups where they cut certain people in on podcast profits along w/ salary or something

i bet he gets a raise to go to spotify and do pods, maybe an occasional article for the ringer, tho once youre getting rich talking into your computer who really wants to type out what you think about some pick and roll coverage

bryan curtis made a good point on simmons podcast essentially saying that ESPN just agreed to spend $2 billion a year to air NBA games, so even the $1 million plus you're spending on lowe is a pittance when viewed thru the lens of supporting interest in your own investment

espn has plenty of nfl online personalities and talking heads who analyze the sport at a granular strategic level. seems like they don't think there's a real appetite for that kind of basketball discussion, and/or are just going all in on the pro wrestling aspects of star- and narrative-based nba coverage
