my fav hoops pod rn is brian windhorst's espn pod w/ the other espn basketball ppl. it's basically the old truehoop podcast but w/ all good/smart writers and no "personalities" like amin or the more talk radio-ish guys that used to be on the truehoop pods. windhorst is kind of a garbage writer but as a moderator of conversation he's good bcuz he is very very knowledgeable about the league.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 March 2019 20:18 (five years ago) link

i listen to it cause brian is good but i actually hate the combinations of guests who rarely seem to have any chemistry. other than bontemps whose grumpiness i enjoy they can be a drag.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 17 March 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link

it's a little worse now bcuz jackie macmullan is out... sometimes it's a weird crew. kirk goldsberry in partic is not very good.

Via sources: TNT will no longer air the Players Only NBA broadcast. Turner Sports will likely do some Players Only content but as far as games for the 2019-20 season, the Players Only broadcast on TNT is no more.

a not-bad idea that was horribly executed.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 21:54 (five years ago) link

i did enjoy some players only broadcasts but when it was bad it was insufferable... they also did it too often. would've liked to see them tweak a bit but oh well

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 July 2019 21:56 (five years ago) link

yah you both are otm. kinda wish they tried to hone it to a good spot and adapt it rather than dump it completely but the naysayers were pretty harsh on it from the start.

big city slam (Spottie), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 22:31 (five years ago) link

i think they'd just need to be more selective about the scheduling... it was a cool vibe for those middle of the season thursday night west coast TNT games that are like blazers vs rockets or whatever. but sometimes they'd get a good game where you actually wanna hear real announcers and it would be like, why'd anyone think this was a good idea

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 July 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

by good game i mean big game

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 July 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

yeah there was one where there was some crazy shotmaking going on between two good teams and i think on a big go ahead bucket greg anthony was like "well that was a really nice look there ... well executed" or some monotone platitude and all i wanted was a breen BAAAAANG or w/e

big city slam (Spottie), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link

barnes is good breaking down the game and what not from the little postgame and The Jump clips ive seen but not sure about entertaining for a 2.5 hour broadcast. its really a hard skill, even the best at it get bad after a while (van gundy).

big city slam (Spottie), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 23:25 (five years ago) link

an idea for players only would be to rotate different guys in and out like a quarter at a time or something

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 23:34 (five years ago) link

Players only being gone is good but questionable stuff is going on. They got rid of The Starters, Kamla gone. Seems like cost cutting for no reason.

I have watched the first two episodes of the first one. For us hoop addicts it is always fun to get behind the scenes footage but it is very curated and yes very vanilla. Lebron and Jimmy’s respective shticks are pretty familiar at this point, Tatum is interesting mostly as a Cs fan. That looks like a better group for sure and will be especially good if the season ends up falling apart for the Clips or for that matter the suns

it’s any athlete or celebrity’s dream. you give the impression of being open and vulnerable but you’re always in control of the narrative and you know that a corporation like netflix is never going to do you justin bieber & beyonce sparked a similar gold rush in pop star documentaries that are partnerships between the star and the huge streaming service all in service of burnishing both brands while giving the viewer a fake look behind the curtains. it’s a total perversion of what a documentary is supposed to be, but of course also explains a lot about, or is very reflective of, the time we live in

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:14 (six days ago) link

i havent watched any of these shows for any of the sports except i did watch one ep of the f1 one cause everyone was talking about it and the one thing i thought was cool about it was how they contextualized the character studies of the athletes with real technical discussion of the sport like they were talking about tire wear and whatnot giving an education for people who might be new to it which is pretty clever as far as making new fans and is interesting for existing ones not sure if the nba one is like that

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:19 (six days ago) link

there is something that happens culturally now where something hits for reasons that are unique to the thing in question and then everyone rushes to copy it bcuz it is something that has managed to cut thru, except the circumstances of the thing make it impossible to copy. part of the F1 show’s magic is that the american audience was unfamiliar with the sport and the individuals involved. it was a blank stage on which the directors could stage a play of their own design. they set all the narratives and story arcs. it was puppeteered. i say that as a fan. drive to survive isn’t a “documentary,” it’s more like a reality show. the NFL QB and NBA ones aren’t able to replicate most of those factors and so you get left with basically the same thing an athlete might make for their own youtube channel

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:20 (six days ago) link

I have zero interest in this.

Jeff, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:21 (six days ago) link

I feel like the success of Quarterback had a lot more to do with Starting Five probably idk

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:27 (six days ago) link

where did quarterback come from

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 17:30 (six days ago) link

QB show came from peyton manning’s production company, which also produced the starting 5 show in conjunction w/ lebron and maverick carter’s production company & the obamas production company. but it’s all from netflix trying to find more ‘drive to survive’ style successes. also they would’ve had to green light and prob been filming starting 5 before the QB show even aired

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 18:19 (six days ago) link

jordan otm. hard knocks works too cos you really get a lot of unfiltered stuff and it doesnt SEEM quite as curated. and also no one really knows these NFL personalities as well as the main NBA guys who all already have their own personal brands people are familiar with.

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 18:30 (six days ago) link

a lot of the Hard Knocks players are just getting a training camp tryout and have no guaranteed contracts or clout, they're at a very different place in the hierarchy

symsymsym, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 18:32 (six days ago) link

Hard Knocks can be pretty boring but sometimes you do get a sense of how hapless some organizations are.

symsymsym, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 18:35 (six days ago) link

yeah it always seemed like what people liked about hard knocks was being introduced to the unknown players scrapping for roster spots, the stories of their journeys etc. it wasn’t about following tom brady. and honestly the F1 series isn’t either — bcuz the sport is so static at the top the show at least in the early seasons focused more on the teams and racers who were, in the words of the show, driving to survive. the NFL & NBA ones do the very modern corporate thing of being like “hey we all love to click on stuff about famous people we already know right???”

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 October 2024 18:40 (six days ago) link
