the thing is if you look at some of those drafts, the hornets kinda just got unlucky. nobody in that zeller draft was good, and the good players picked right after after vonleh (saric, zach lavine, nurkic) are not exactly franchise cornerstones.

the MKG pick is an underrated franchise killer tho. passed on brad beal, lillard and drummond. the kaminsky one also a borderline franchise killer. and i guess picking malik monk over donovan mitchell has a chance to look really, really bad. so i guess they did fuck up.

that trade is a fuckin insult j0rdy

kemba and essentially 4 first round picks for kawhi is not *insane*

the sticking point for me is that malik monk might be bad

If they made that trade we could get the magical Kawhight pairing

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 27 March 2018 02:45 (six years ago) link

i don't think rich cho suddenly got horrible at his job--it has to be really hard to run a team without a clear direction from ownership to aggressively chase titles. mj almost certainly intervened in the kaminsky pick and it seems like if anything their goal is to be in the respectable middle but they've missed that mark a couple times for various reasons.

i think to be in the respectable middle you need one all star (last year's okc, indiana now, bucks, kawhi-less spurs, boogie-less pels) and they have zero

vonleh was chalk at that point in the draft--i didn't like him but plenty of informed people did. jury's out on monk, he has plenty of time to improve.

the mkg pick feels like something that might not happen in the draft today--last remnants of an old way of doing things or something like that.

How does anyone lose to the grizzlies at this point they aren’t even trying to win they’re rolling out like 7 g leaguers every night

give the hornets brad stevens and kemba would waltz to an all-star. the talent is there, but the hornets aren't going to maximize it.

Bad coach, bad management, and a city that hasn’t cared for them since the early 90s.

i remember john hollinger arguing at the time that MKG was the right second pick because his defensive potential meant his floor was really high, and i guess in a sense he was right... like MKG is a disappointment but he's not hasheem thabeet. but i feel like the way the league is now you wouldn't pick a guy that high whose shot was in that form (lonzo at least had good numbers in college). maybe josh jackson is testing my theory tho

Jeff, Tuesday, 27 March 2018 12:58 (six years ago) link

I literally had forgotten about fultz’s existence until a week or so ago and it’s kinda weird that they’re playing him at all this late but it’s probably good for his confidence to play 10 games or w/e at semi nba speed

Clifford looked good 2 years ago but the team has fallen off pretty hard with roughly the same roster. they should be making the offs in the east with their current guys imo

ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 March 2018 14:24 (six years ago) link

i don't think they're a bottom 10 org tho. would put them closer to the middle

ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 March 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link

they should have beat the heat in that series a few years ago but marvin williams missed 150 three pointers and they faced a wade who had just stepped out of a time machine. they would have lost to toronto so i don't think it would have mattered either way, but that team was pretty good. i don't think i've seen the hornets play a full game this year so idk how much of it is clifford but just looking at the roster.. but when you're surrounding kemba w/ marvin, batum, dwight, kaminsky, jeremy lamb and MKG that just seems like a roster construction problem that idk how you would solve, especially offensively you have a dynamic offensive player surrounded by guys who are decent at best.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 March 2018 14:29 (six years ago) link

i'd believe that the hornets are a bottom 10 org. you can make all sorts of front office and coaching and roster changes but if you have an owner who doesn't know what he's doing then that's a permanent debilitation (shoutout james dolan). what do the hornets want to be as a team? what kind of players do they value? why? what's their system? what kind of players would succeed for them but fail in other places? why? how do they acquire those players? all these sorts of questions can be answered by/for good orgs and for the hornets i have literally no idea what you would say to any of those kinds of questions.

yeah i've watched more heat games this year than any since the bron era. more often than not they're just a little too limited against great teams, but the style of play can be intoxicating.
