The Boston Celtics have emerged as the frontrunner to sign Charlotte All-Star guard Kemba Walker once free agency opens Sunday at 6 PM ET, league sources tell ESPN.

danny “lagoon” ainge

hollow your fart (m bison), Thursday, 27 June 2019 13:00 (five years ago) link

is the implication that they're going to just sign him outright rather than do a sign-and-trade? i feel like that would eat up most if not all of their space and then they'd be left with, what, Gordon Hayward guarding their back line of defense?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 27 June 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link

yeah idk have to assume the celtics are aware they dont have any centers but not sure what their plan is

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:08 (five years ago) link

the base year compensation rules make it next to impossible to do a sign and trade with kemba.

sign and trades have become really hard to do. i'd bet against seeing a single one this offseason tbh.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:15 (five years ago) link

getting kemba would be a pretty impressive pivot for the celtics given that he's the best free agent they reasonably have a shot at. i think you can go back and forth on how good he *actually* is but he's the type of guy that has thrived on brad stevens teams, he won't need to do as much as he did in charlotte, he's going to be a huge hit with the city, etc. etc.

they still have $5m bucks or so to get a center which should be plenty.

yeah that is tempting. i really like turner. sabonis though, f no

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:47 (five years ago) link

ya, indy might like it too

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link

and they both make $NaN

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link

taken from elsewhere but lol

Upside: Very good player

Downside: Lots more UConn fans coming to games

Tough call but I’m in favor of it

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link

why would the pacers trade turner

micah, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:08 (five years ago) link

with the other FA renouncements they would be making if kemba were to formally commit, i think (though i'm not 100 percent on the math) they might well have space for someone above the bargain basement level, like a dewayne dedmon type

xp i really dont think they would, also cutting bait on jaylen seems wicked unwise

i don't think they would (or should) but if they feel they can't keep both turner and sabonis then they could make sabonis the starting 5, not pay bogdanovic who is older and replace him with brown, pay thad young for defense, and set up the team that way. it's a path that makes some sense but i think they will try to play sabonis and turner together until they realize it doesn't work.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:19 (five years ago) link

yeah it solves positional issues for them and they get a really good young player

its not cutting bait, its a trade for value

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

pacers also drafted a center

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:57 (five years ago) link

still feel like with kemba they risk having too much material and not enough glue again unless they make another big move

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

xp oh yeah the big dude who is certainly going to intentionally injure somebody in a few years

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

boston has kemba fever

Hi everyone.

I was walking in Boston Common today and ran into this 4 month old lab.

His name is Kemba.

You guessed it.

He was named after Kemba Walker because his owners went to UConn.

If this ain't a sign, I don't know what is.

Please RT for good luck. pic.twitter.com/euyI8u5v8k

aw hi kemba!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

Kemba feels kind of like an effort to recapture those feel-good Isaiah days, though with a presumably better and more durable player. Splitting the difference between Isaiah and Kyrie, kinda

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 27 June 2019 16:56 (five years ago) link

yes this is why i support the move, maybe the celtics are better as a feisty second round team lol

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

tho they get a bunch of young guys who can play and who knows what develops

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 June 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

yep. Very intrigued by the Brown for Turner idea. Seems like Turner almost is what he is at this point, while Brown still growing into something, but what Turner is is pretty good and we need it. Just listened to Windy on Lowe's podcast yesterday though and both see Pacers as committed to making Sabonis/Turner work, for reasons unknown.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 27 June 2019 17:09 (five years ago) link

i think turner can get to another level if they let him hoist from 3

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 June 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

hes a great defender who can knock down open 3s, past that if he just works on stuff like making plays out of the pnr getting his shot off a lil faster etc seems like he shd be real good for years

hard to come away from that article w/ any feeling beyond, damn danny ainge really screwed it up

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2019 02:55 (five years ago) link

if i'm assigning blame i feel that way more about stevens than ainge. i'm not really sure what ainge was supposed to do?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 29 June 2019 03:05 (five years ago) link

i think stevens is doing the honorable thing by trying to absorb the blame but if a coach is publicly saying "the pieces didn't fit" that means to me it falls squarely on the GM

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

the one thing i will give both stevens & ainge a pass on is the gordon hayward stuff.... the players should've understood that minutes needed to be invested in hayward simply so that he could get used to playing in the NBA again and that this year in all likelihood was going to be a struggle for him

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2019 03:09 (five years ago) link

yeah to me the biggest controllable thing that just didn't work was the handling of hayward. i don't know who to blame for that tbh. if they did a consolidation trade to get guys more shots or whatever hayward would still have been there playing like shit.

they thought they had a switchable monster with 4 two-way wings and if everyone played reasonably well that would have been correct.

The Boston Celtics and French center Vincent Poirier have agreed to a two-year deal, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium. Poirier is a 6-foot-11 center who will provide additional front court depth in Boston.

celtics taking the kyrie breakup hard

Much has been made of the continued availability of DeMarcus Cousins. According to source, Celtics are not interested. Don't want the potential drama.
