brad mad

Brad Stevens asked about going to zone more: "I'd like to play multiple defenses well, but to do that, we have to at least play one well."

aw thats harsh they played pretty good D, forced a tun of TOs, they just couldnt get buckets when they needed them.

the spurs hit an insane amount of midrange shots, tough to do much about that

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 January 2021 05:07 (three years ago) link

they still like to take those

the spurs hit an insane amount of midrange shots

with so many modern nba defenses concentrating on rim protection and chasing shooters off the three point line, mid-range shots are necessarily more available as good open looks, because it's impossible to defend the whole floor all the time. if you can make 'em at a high enough percentage, they're worth taking in volume.

Compromise isn't a principle, it's a method (Aimless), Thursday, 28 January 2021 16:42 (three years ago) link

sure ive said this before but the idea that the midrange is dead is just not true! the thing that died was the long two, those shots a step or two inside the 3pt line, shots from say inside 18ft havent fallen off much, theres a lot of misleading charts out there

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 January 2021 16:56 (three years ago) link

an open 15ftr is still a good shot, not as good as an open layup but those are hard to get

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 January 2021 16:57 (three years ago) link

aldridge took a shot last night with one foot on the 3pt line and the other one inside it, i was like wow you dont see that much anymore, but iverson used to do it all the time

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 January 2021 16:59 (three years ago) link

bird and ainge used to do it all the time too iirc

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 28 January 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

melo still has a habit of catching and triple threating from about 20 ft and it feels like a throwback to 50 years ago

phew that looked bad

Positive news for the Celtics: First-team All-Defensive guard Marcus Smart has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 left calf strain, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. He will miss some time, but sigh of relief for all.

Timelord is tied for 2nd in the league in blocks per 100 possessions and 9th in the league in steals per 100 and is 2nd in TS% (minimum 100 minutes played).

nice piece on jayson's background and evolution as a player https://www.si.com/nba/2021/02/03/jayson-tatum-celtics-path-stardom

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:31 (three years ago) link

idk about nance but generally yeah

Apparently people don't know who should be on The List of Guys to Try For:

Anunoby, Grant, Gordon, Barnes, Nance

Then Thad Young or Maxi Kleber and possibly a few others

Then you get into the smaller, less helpful wing targets like Ross, THJ, Hart, Temple, etc.

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 February 2021 15:57 (three years ago) link

og youd really have to back up the truck for which could be worth it tbh toronto prob not interested anyway, grant and gordon prob the sweet spot of possible and would work, barnes wld be good too but hes older and makes iirc enough money that it cld put them over the tax line, thad young you could get for not much which wld be nice, tho getting a younger guy who could be a long term third wing w the jays is much preferable imho

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 February 2021 16:06 (three years ago) link

thad young is having a great season and would be a nice fit. i don't think anunoby, grant, kelber, or probably even nance are realistic.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2021 16:45 (three years ago) link

good but not great players on bad teams are generally getable if youre willing to make a real offer, because this trade exemption represents prob their last chance to add a significant salary i think the celtics should consider doing just that if they can get someone good whos on the jays timeline, rather than going after a gap filler like young or barnes, its not dannys style tho of course

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 February 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

Gordon really is the sweet spot. Glad ORL stopped their strange behavior of winning games back at the start the season, making him less gettable. If they can actually trade for Gordon, Markelle Fultz's inability to play basketball for some reason really has to be a contender in the making-Danny-Ainge-look-good MVP race

i dunno man, the font, too - futura is a classic font but i don’t think it belongs on a basketball jersey. maybe theis likes it. very bauhaus

THAT DON’T MAKE IT RIGHT

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 February 2021 00:22 (three years ago) link

it kind of does but irregardless of all that its just a really nice design imo thats novel while still staying within the celtics aesthetic, much more so than say the black alternates thare just kind of generic basketball uniforms

lag∞n, Friday, 5 February 2021 00:27 (three years ago) link

even just the details like the thick single band of piping, very clean, very polished, one might say "minimalism"

fact checking cuz, Friday, 5 February 2021 04:40 (three years ago) link

grant williams is 19-39 from 3 this year ie 49%, last year he was 24-96 for 25% which included his famous 0-25 to start the season, now he is also shooting 54% from the line where he shot 72% last year so this may just be a heater, BUT the thing is his shot looks really good, and it looked bad last year, its very compact and balanced with good rhythm, looks pretty much like an ideal shot for grant williams who will be getting open catch and shoot looks, and mostly this season as far as i saw he was taking open corner shit and hitting them which was nice, good for grant and the celtics, but then recently ive seen him take some shots from the wing and even a couple times catch and relocate with a single dribble, and his shot still looks good and hes hitting them

not saying hes gonna keep hitting 50% or even 40 but if he can really shoot some thats pretty huge as hes already a good versatile defender who will prob continue to improve on that end as he seems like a heady opportunistic player, he could really be something for the celtics

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:05 (three years ago) link

also if he can improve his shot in one short offseason thats a good trajectory for his development

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:08 (three years ago) link

feel like im kind of underselling his defense too, he does marcus smart type stuff regularly and can guard positions 3-5, hes also freakishly strong, im high on grant! after being pretty ambivalent last year

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:14 (three years ago) link

they should try to trade him to SA for rudy gay so they can win the title this year

trans-panda express (m bison), Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:14 (three years ago) link

ok i will tell danny

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:25 (three years ago) link

im pretty stoked on this team even tho theyve been not that great so far, they need to upgrade their bench particularly get a third big wing as we have discussed, they need to find a stretch of health where all their main guys can play together

and i feel like and this might be the toughest part kemba needs to figure out how to be more of a distributor, ive noticed since hes been on the celtics that hes not quite as good of a playmaker as you might think given his general profile, he drives a lot looking to score and when he gets rebuffed he often pauses for a moment and then tries to figure out a pass, rather than having a pass ready within the flow of the play, or he forces a tough shot, which is too bad because this team would be perfect for him to drive and kick more, he can always get past the first level of D so thats gonna create open shooters he just needs to figure out how to find them

generally the celtics need to drive and kick more theres too much one on one play from all their big 3, which is because theyre all really good at it, but a little more ball movement would really take their offense to the next level IMHO, especially when youve got grant out there bombing 3s!

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:25 (three years ago) link

this guy also seems to have figured some stuff out, life is full or surprises

Carsen Edwards is up to 51 percent shooting on season (40 percent from 3) after his standout outing on Friday night https://t.co/7Wkl4nWpOv

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:45 (three years ago) link

was trying to think if theres ever been a really good "small sniper" type player, obvs theres great small shooters like kyrie trae etc but those guys are all around players, has there been like a tiny klay thompson, doesnt seem like a natural type as its much harder to get those catch and shoots off when youre small, anyway carsen is not a great creator w the dribble or particularly much of a finisher around the rim so maybe he can try to be the baby bomber

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:55 (three years ago) link

speaking of role players Teague seems to have this ability to turn it on and become very creative on the dribble, inbetween spells of total anonymity

agree about grant w, he’s kind of a genre-defying player

Also agree about the kickouts and kemba

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 6 February 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

yeah teague has been borderline unstoppable off the dribble in the past but hes looking very cooked right now, who knows maybe hell find some form but i have not been loving what ive seen so far, pritchard has totally out played him to this point

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 February 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link

yeah i'm not really sure what carsen is yet other than "better than jeff teague."

agree that kemba's game needs to evolve, was interesting last night watching him use penetration to get to the cp3 style short jumper rather than going all the way to the rim. his days of being a true three-level scorer might be over but he should be able to use the threat of his shooting to get good shots for other guys.
