the weirdest ft shooter I remember seeing was Shawn Marion, wouldn’t he kind of shove the ball with both hands semi-horizontally at the backboard?

pretty funny that rick barry, one of the greatest shooters ever, shot free throws underhand

― That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 28 February 2021 03:44 (four years ago)
iirc Rick Barry was and remains outspoken about the underhand free throw. I know I heard an interview once about how he got Wilt to do it for a game or part of a season or something and he was able to make a much higher percentage, but wilt wouldn’t stick with it bc it didn’t look cool. It’s pretty amazing how many dudes in that video actually had dece percentages. More than one way to skin a cat!

i didn't realize until recently that elena delle donne is a significantly better ft shooter than any nba player. her holding the ball out with her elbow at a 90 degree angle seems notable, but her shot looks pretty conventional.

Ralph Miller, the coach of the Oregon State Beaver hoops team from 1970-1989 favored a similar heavily pass-oriented offense. I think he cribbed it from Phog Allen. He hated to see his guards dribbling more than twice.

finally track down the penn coach who taught it to pooh and
O’Hanlon said he doesn’t remember when he first did “The Reach Across.” He was always trying to come up with new moves and discovered this one on his own and never saw anyone do it before him. “I did come up with that,” he said. “I didn’t steal it from anyone.”

this kinda stuff is why i said i feel like thibs is really in the spotlight this year as a technician. i still think once we settle into the season the knicks will be able to outscore most of their opponents, esp teams in the east. but you can't just roll this line up out there and let the defense do its thing, the weak points are too obvious. how do they leverage their wing defenders and keep brunson and KAT away from being exploited at the point of attack? i'm sure they will come up w/ some solutions + boston stresses every defense in ways no other team really can, but i think there is prob gonna be a lot of tinkering for them to do on that side of the ball to figure out how to protect brunson and KAT

― lag∞n, Sunday, 30 March 2025 15:26 (three months ago)
tough thing about about the big non shooting slashing forwards is you really need to pair them with a shooting center which is a pretty big constraint, now if the big non shooting slashing forward can just play center themselves at least some of the time thats a lot better but scotty barnes amen thompson are too small, if i was houston i would build the team around this concept tho cause i dont think amens going to learn to shoot but hes so good otherwise, unfortunately the team they have now is kinda the opposite of that
― lag∞n, Sunday, 30 March 2025 15:32 (three months ago)
So we need more of the accompanying archetype (Channing Frye)
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 31 March 2025 10:02 (three months ago)
ya tho the thing is theyve also got to be able to defend you need brook lopez tho in the case of brook lopez giannis could easily just play full time center hes hoarding brook lopez
― lag∞n, Monday, 31 March 2025 12:26 (three months ago)
Yeah i was trying and failing to be funny by naming Frye, as the center who could do nothing but make 3s. Lopez is def the actual archetype there and pairing him with Giannis one of the better GM moves of recent years, akin to Denver bringing in Gordon.
