this 20-minute long extended feed of sad Duke fans waiting to be addressed by Coach K is one of the greatest moments in sports television history. I’m riveted

i have two really good friends from high school who went to duke, apparently he would use rallies to ream out the student sections for not cheering hard enough using like total full profanity. he is a psychotic little rat man.

i haven't been paying attention to the acc, but i was sort of surprised to see that unc isn't ranked despite being 14-5 in conference play.

― circles, Saturday, March 5, 2022 8:26 PM (thirty-seven minutes ago)

bad year for the ACC. not sure UNC has a single NBA player on their team. even duke feels like a top 5 team by default more than anything. banchero might be the only NBA player on their team.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:06 (two years ago) link

if you root for an acc basketball team that isn't duke you're very well aware that coach k is notorious for berating the refs into leaning towards duke w/ his demonic vermin screaming that will never ever get T'd up because he is the one and only coach k

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:07 (two years ago) link

xxxp that was not my experience having gone to duke (tbf i am old)

i mean, i don't think he's a *nice* guy, but i doubt he's worse than most other coaches, let alone the successful ones

i will say i hate duke but i don’t hate coach k. idk why. maybe it’s bcuz so many NBA players who didn’t play for him in college seem to love him

i mean im sure hes good with players, college sports is so much about recruiting after all, but hes def got a halo

lag∞n, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:33 (two years ago) link

tbh i just think he pays a great deal of attention to the small shit

ten years ago i went to a duke fantasy camp (courtesy of an extremely loaded friend, because i can in no way afford that) and basically tore my acl the first time i touched the ball, which was embarrassing af

two weeks later he fucking called me to 'see how i was doing'

obviously he built up advantages (and presumably he thought i had more money to spend on him) but that's good recruiting

mookieproof, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:34 (two years ago) link

wow yeah that is some high level shit

lag∞n, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:36 (two years ago) link

that's impressive as hell, no argument from me

call all destroyer, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:36 (two years ago) link

yeah, that's impressive. even as the years went on he could still sell himself to recruits and their families, duke donors, the media, and nba players on team usa. lol, i guess seeing bob knight up close gave him good example of how not to do it.

Speaking of skinny kids, at LSU Pete Maravich stood 6' 5" and weighed 160. He still averaged over 40 ppg for each of his three years playing on the "varsity" team - with no three point shots either! This was back when college freshmen were not allowed to play with the big boys.

kevin durant was so skinny coming out of college he couldnt bench the standard 185 at the draft combine think he said something like "good thing the ball doesnt weigh 185 pounds" lmao

and you know what hes still very skinny

Was just struck by that fact seeing him play the other day. Surprisingly never really beefed up. I thought he kinda did when on Warriors?? Maybe the TV I was watching then was distorted lol

Frustrated fan-base member here. This is good for everyone involved ... Kentucky, which saves a $33 million buyout ... and even Cal, who lands at a top 10? 15? college basketball job at a school with national championship pedigree/aspirations and at least one booster (Cal's pal the Tyson chicken family) willing to pony up to get there. The past 5 years have been a failure at UK, but I don't think anyone could characterize his full run there as a failure.

One nitpick on lagoon's point: Yes, he has continued to recruit one and dones and he built this year's team around them ... but it's not like he has shunned the transfer portal. The team that lost to St. Peter's two years ago was the oldest team in the country and included transfers from Iowa, Georgia, Davidson, Rhode Island and Creighton ... and they flamed out, too.

It's very clear that roster construction has changed in college hoops and Cal didn't adjust enough. But there are other/bigger issues at play with regard to how they've ended their seasons since 2019.

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:10 (seven months ago) link

US college sports 'boosters' are mostly very horrible people, and in their pursuit of winning teams they've dumped tons of money on some very horrible coaches with Bobby Knight being the poster child. It's hard to have any sympathy at all for the coaches who embrace the system and reap the biggest rewards.

i don't think arkansas is a top 10 or 15 cbb job

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 April 2024 17:16 (seven months ago) link

def a solid landing spot for him tho, he can still probably get a similar level of recruit

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 April 2024 17:22 (seven months ago) link

yeah he brings a top ten job with him, especially since hes got the chicken man in his pocket

lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:34 (seven months ago) link

right, i just wouldn't say arkansas is a top 15 job on its own, since the job only opened after eric musselman left to coach usc (the one in california)

i wld rather go to usc but arkansas is nice too

lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:48 (seven months ago) link

Let's name jobs better than Arkansas, understanding this is of course subjective:

Kentucky
Carolina
Kansas
Duke
Arizona
UCONN
Michigan
Michigan State
Texas
UCLA
Southern Cal (I guess)
Villanova
Louisville and (especially) Indiana are like Marty McFly's siblings fading away in that photo at the end of Back To The Future

that's 14, but i'm not so sure a coach leaves Arkansas for Indiana.

we're talking history, of course, and resources, nearby recruits, etc. i don't have enough info on NIL programs to consider them.

Zags? Houston? Virginia? Maryland? Ohio State? we're getting into dicey territory.

In addition to the Tyson chicken family, Arkansas has a *ton* of money it can tap into, and it *cares* about being good at basketball.

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:16 (seven months ago) link

Florida, maybe.
Syracuse? Not imo. But I suppose some people would think so.
Illinois if you can get Chicago kids.

I might've underrated Maryland and Ohio State.

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:20 (seven months ago) link

Point is Arkansas is right near #15 ... maybe it's #14, maybe it's #17. I almost put "top 20" but got excited. :)

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:21 (seven months ago) link

Arkansas is 52nd in most recent final four appearance. A good Jimbo retirement job for college basketball's Jimbo.

145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 8 April 2024 19:52 (seven months ago) link

Cal is a great car salesman but pretty meh as a strategic in game coach.

Cal recruits big throws them out there and if their magnificence wins out good, but switch things up in game rare to never.

Dude made much of his rep as big fish small pond conferences.

it’s so funny when you watch a lot of NBA and then watch a little college and even the best teams struggle to do things like get the ball over half under pressure, make a secondary read, rotate correctly on defense… and then you watch uconn and they’re on a string
