xp was funny a few games ago where jvg randomly went on a huge rant about load management, i think it was a lakers game and breen was saying something about how it would be good for bron to get more rest for the next game and jvg kept doubling down saying he thought the vets would be better in the next game the more minutes they played, to establish a rhythm or something like that

it’s impossible for me to separate my feelings about him from the starks/ewing/oakley knicks but i think even without that he’d still be my favorite color guy
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 May 2023 17:58 (one year ago) link
cant believe these coaches who watched first hand as the spurs built a dynasty on being the first team to do load management and yet they still dont believe it

also after one of tatum’s made threes near the end he said “jayson tatum! not always there when you call but always on time” which actually felt like a correct interpretation of that lyric w/in the context of a star player missing every shot for 3.75 quarters but then draining three threes to ice the game

Back when JVG was coaching, I only ever saw him in photos and so I always assumed that his affect was closer to Eeyore than to Jefferino Hot Dog Buddy.

i had a pleasant run in w/ stan van yesterday. he hopped out of a car outside my office in midtown and i was like “what the…” but there’s a very famous restaurant right next door & it turned out he was looking for that (not an uncommon occurrence). i think he flew down from boston for the night to hang with his wife. he’s lost a lot of weight, he looked goodit was actually at least the third stan van encounter of my life. back in his heat days he didn’t live too far from my parents, his daughter and my brother were in middle school at the same time. he always looked kinda disheveled, it was a bit like running into khalid shield mohammed. he’s looking better these days

mannix is getting absolutely cooked for these comments
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix talks the Denver Nuggets media gripe."they're just not a compelling team to talk about - to write about"Worth noting that @SIChrisMannix and his cohort are compelled by attention. And financial return. They peddle NBA sugar, not basketball. pic.twitter.com/RSLKMbb2dl— n i k o l a e s t h e t i c (@nikolaesthetic) May 25, 2023

interpreting his comments in the most generous possible light, I get what he’s saying to a degree. so many of these guys are employed not because of their value as analysts but because the players are such willing participants in the drama circus, and jokic just doesn’t participate in any of that stuff off the court. it’s tough for the brand these guys are trying to market
― k3vin k., Thursday, 25 May 2023 18:28 (one year ago) link
saw someone earlier tweeting about how basketball is interesting and people who like it should cover it, now i know what that was about lol

Morant brandishing weapons on Instagram is better basketball news than Jokic breaking a record set by Wilt Chamberlain, apparently.

I’ve said this before but as a casual at best NFL fan, the level of actual football analysis on mainstream broadcasts is just in another universe compared to the NBA

xpyes. I realised a few years ago that I would watch the games on TV and feel like I understood broadly what was happening and nothing the commentators said would disabuse me of that notion. then I would go on ilx and realise that I only understood about 30 pc of what I was watching.
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 25 May 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link
there is an intellectual component to every football play that doesn’t really exist in other sports. you basically have to understand how/why every single play is working on a base level to even be given the opportunity to step onto an NFL field. and then there’s the fact that QBs are the most famous players & it’s also the most intellectually demanding position so you get lots of ex QB analysts whose brains are specifically trained to break down plays before they even happen. but even the guys at other positions have to understand the game on a crazy level. like find an interview of any random cornerback explaining how his responsibilities on a play completely shift from a, b, c, d options to e, f, g, h options in a heartbeat bcuz a WR simply motioned across the field. NFL football is extraordinarily complicated mentally it’s really nuts also keep in mind there’s essentially like 30 seconds of dead time after every football play so granular analysis is built into the broadcasts in a way that can’t exist w/ basketball
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 25 May 2023 19:35 (one year ago) link
yeah the rhythm of watching football is funny watch a play rewatch it from different angles at different speeds try to understand what happened watch the next play

― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 June 2023 19:13 (one year ago) link
what is everyone's pod hierarchy at this point? i think this is where i am for the stuff in my feed:
dunc'd on/duncan and hollinger - best detail, cold-blooded analysiswindhorst/bontemps/mcmahon - best insidery content, best sniping at each otherrussillo nba pods - decent layman analysis, good interviewlowe - good layman analysis, bad interviewersimmons - occasionally good insider stuff but wildly out of touch these days
― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 June 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link
the draft is a hard watch for me and always has been. i dont pay enough attention to college ball to play along really.
pods:
– bill & russilo: dont care for them apart, only together, and its mostly for the lolz and to play the over/under game on when bills first celtics/pats reference will drop. russillos ability to land a 30-45 second run-on sentence with a handful of different tangents is legendary. also love him checking bill on his bs, in a lighthearted way – lowe - his pod has always been kinda awkward, and hes often annoying in the way he praises players, but hes still good at breaking stuff down. i dont listen to all his episodes, just depends on his guests. i never listen to his interviews cos of how bad he is. – windhorst / hoops collective - theyre plugged in enough to warrant must listen status usually
if time and/or depending on topics
– duncd on - pretty dry but thats fine– ringer nba show - mainly the group chat crew– athletic nba show - if time– thinking basketball - lots of detail, analytic, i think his videos are better than his pod tho– a lot of the player pods, all the smoke, dray, jj, pg, etc
dubs:– warriors plus minus - basically the athletic bay area crew. not particularly great but they are plugged in, so...– TK show (kawakami) - see above, and i dont listen to it consistently, just if im interested to know more about the topic– light years - for the lolz
― Spottie, Friday, 23 June 2023 19:58 (one year ago) link
I listen to hours and hours of NBA pods every week. I think the thing that annoys me most is how obsessed they are with distinguishing themselves from others with evaluations. I'm higher on this guy than most, I'm lower on this guy than most, I am far from the consensus. But really, they all say that same thing with minor variations.
― Jeff, Friday, 23 June 2023 20:20 (one year ago) link
Dunc'ed On is my fav, because I like capitalism/transactions/salary cap/CBA minutia of the NBA the best. Also like the NBA Front Office podcast, Sam Vecenie sometimes when he doesn't go too deep dive on the draft, Thinking Basketball, Dunker's Spot! Steve Jones Jr. cracks me up, Real GM Radio love Danny, Lowe Post depending on guests, same with Bill.
