i cant understand the logic of drafting miller over scoot at all but this is the hornets we're talking about here

wing over guard + they already have a star PG... if their evaluation is wrong & scoot is the next dame it will be a bad move but i don't think it's illogical, exactly. in reality i think the issue is that taking miller is almost too logical, for them. they're being blinded by the logic

i get the positional fit issue, but the comparing miller's ceiling to scoot's makes this seem very easy. just pick scoot and figure out how to make two ball-handlers work. miller seems fine as a player, but i dont see him being a #1 scorer (save this post for owning me later ofc).

his jumper could use work but he's not amen thompson, like he shoots 75% from ft and 32% from 3, those are not irredeemable and hes athletic af

my hangup on miller is outside of shooting, what other skills can he develop that could be elite at the nba level? he doesnt seem poised to be a three-level scorer unless he gets much stronger and can muscle his way into quality shots. he doesnt have the athleticism to guard up and down the lineup or the strength to guard bigs, so i think he'll be exploitable on defense. i guess i see him like MPJ which is still really good but scoot's god the goods to be a perennial all-star.

well, you can... the heat might. but obv you're making a big bet that he's good enough to make up for how many minimum guys you have to roster. maybe the heat are more equipped than most to balance a roster like that

if what everyone is saying about scoot being maniacal about working, winning, franchise leader type personality etc i'd weigh that pretty heavily

given the position he plays & the situation at hand w/ the rest of the draft

other things being equal one might prefer the guy who hasn't been, however tangentially, involved in a shooting

it was me! i dont think that would be the whole trade, but that would the the core. it's bad bc i think building around dame is a fool's errand. i dont think there is any player the blazers can reasonably get that will be very meaningful for "contending"

that said, i honestly cant think of a decent landing spot for dame that gets you a young all-star + picks that would make it worthwhile. teams either have the star or the picks but never both.

yeah generally you have to go pick heavy in these situations with maybe a prospect thrown in cause if teams are trading for a star theyre gonna want to keep their other good players

I don’t think it’s a done deal that Charlotte picks Brandon Miller over Henderson. It has been presented as a specific lean toward Miller for a while, but I am not there yet, much in the same way I wasn’t there last year with calling Jabari Smith Jr.-to-Orlando-at-No. 1 a lock. General manager Mitch Kupchak is known to value the individual workout part of the pre-draft process, so I’ve never believed this would be done until well after they had everyone in, synthesized all of the information and came to a conclusion.

Last year at this time, other teams were working under the impression that Smith was going No. 1 to Orlando. Smoke screens exist. They’re not quite as prevalent as they are in the NFL Draft, but they certainly happen — especially with teams that tend to be quite buttoned up with information. Charlotte has been very quiet and is conducting a professional, well-organized process. It’s been tough to gather anything resembling a well-informed take on the Hornets’ current lean.

This is still entirely up in the air, but I’m going Henderson over Miller in part because I don’t buy the argument that Miller is unequivocally a better fit than Henderson. Henderson and LaMelo Ball play complementary games, with Henderson being more of a power scorer who can kill in the midrange and at the rim and Ball being more of a finesse distributor who can get buckets at the rim and from 3. These two work together. Miller would also work, but I wonder if people around the league are over-indexing on the idea that there is overlap between Henderson and Ball.
