obviously a very unusual situation though for the team with pick #1 to be able to sign the best player in the league in free agency

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 20:57 (two years ago)

of the ones we have listed, the allen/celtics & love/cavs ones were specific situations where a team was loading up on outside stars and so the pick had little value to them aside from being a trade piece

the jrue holiday trade ended up being great for the pelicans but anthony davis was 21 when they made that trade not 32. also the sixers made two pretty bad picks

trading the no 2 pick for elton brand and the no 5 pick for mike miller & randy foye feel like the closer analogues to what this blazers thing would be and needless to say those were not very good trades

If I were the first 18 teams in the draft I'd consider skipping this kid.

time for portland to Reboot With Scoot™

Clay, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 06:09 (two years ago)

I’m gonna “watch some film” on scoot today but it doesn’t seem crazy to me to prefer the guy who actually put up good numbers last season and also isn’t 6-2

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 15:43 (two years ago)

college is fake though

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 15:46 (two years ago)

6-9 wingspan strong + stout super athletic, prob more physically capable than a normal nba 6-4 guy ie he has excellent size for a point, now all things being equal should a wing be preferred to a guard, of course, are all things equal, thats what the teams have to figure out

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 15:52 (two years ago)

its funny players get better training in the g league and europe but going to college is still best for draft positioning, idk about overtime elite seems sketchy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

overtime elite is basically another year of high school

generally speaking if you're out on a limb w/ the charlotte hornets you prob want to be scrambling back to safety but maybe this is the one time they're right...

vibe check

scoot henderson: amazing name

brandon miller: accomplice to a homicide

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:15 (two years ago)

scoot's got a bit of westbrook, ja, pre-injury derrick rose, chris paul. he's not a steph or dame type point which is obv the best case scenario for a pg leading your team, but he should be an all-star at some point in his career. his ability to put pressure on the rim, shoot the midrange, and his playmaking are really impressive. if the hornets were a competent franchise it wouldnt be a discussion. and if they dont like the fit with lamelo, they should trade lamelo.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:20 (two years ago)

miller's stats were good not great, he shot only 43% from two, notoriously was a poor finisher at the basket & isn't a great athlete. he's a very good three point shooter tho. there's some jabari smith jr, harrison barnes, andrew wiggins vibes to his profile frankly

scoot meanwhile is said to be a plus plus athlete for a PG... was listening to hollinger say he's not quite at russell westbrook's level but is comparable to derrick rose or john wall. he's also by all accounts a legitimately good basketball player already as a teenager, was just running a quasi-pro team which is a higher level of ball than miller

to me it seems like scoot has the skills and mentality to be a high floor prospect while also having the athletic upside of a high ceiling prospect. whereas miller has the high floor bcuz of the size & shooting but maybe not the athleticism or mentality to be a star wing player... again we return to the wiggins, barnes, smith jr type player

of course i'm synthesizing things i've been reading/hearing about these guys, i'm not a scout myself. but i think that's largely accurate

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:22 (two years ago)

i'll also note for anyone interested in doing some amateur scouting reports & such that there is a dedicated draft thread where our takes can be preserved for time...

2023 nba draft thread: starring victor, scoot... and more!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:23 (two years ago)

peak rose was a better pure athlete than westbrook, russ is just a maniac

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:27 (two years ago)

one of the best ever at playing athletically/physically

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:28 (two years ago)

i think russ has the insane first step and acceleration that is like at the top in the history of the league whereas w/ rose it's the leaping ability

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:30 (two years ago)

scoot is kind of a maniac which bodes well for his career as a normal-sized human playing basketball

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:31 (two years ago)

thx for the video, seems like the comps are pretty obvious -- rose, wall, westbrook, ja etc. he looks like he'll be fun to watch. being undersized and not really shooting or playing defense is a bit of a red flag for me, though of course he could get better, by all accounts he seems to be a hard worker. I'm not saying it would be wrong to take a guy like that second, when it comes down to it the draft is really just a crapshoot, but to me that's not the type of player that you're seeing on a lot of championship contending teams

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:42 (two years ago)

seems like a guy who should be able to defend, shooting is the big question mark, mid range shot seems good but can he extend it to the three point line, pretty big question mark, hes not under sized as outline up thread

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:46 (two years ago)

isnt he 6-2 why did u say 6-4

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:47 (two years ago)

i didnt i said he has better size than an average nba 6-4 guy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:49 (two years ago)

player one: 6-4 with 6-7 wingspan
player two 6-2 with 6-9 wingspan

who has better size?

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:49 (two years ago)

ah ok I see

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:51 (two years ago)

5-6 guy with 9-6 wingspan is the next evolution

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 17:29 (two years ago)

player one is nba champ jamal murray btw player two is scoot

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 17:37 (two years ago)

but murray can shoot very well is more the issue

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 17:37 (two years ago)

i remember wanting the celtics to draft murray that year. jaylen ended up being fine too though

NEWS: The Boston Celtics are pursuing Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards in a potential opt-in and trade deal, league sources tell Shams Charania.

More details:

this is an amazing idea for boston hard to imagine a better offseason for them than trading for porzingis and giving him a huge contract, really hope this happens

C's brain trust is really searching for ideas

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 18:38 (two years ago)

brad following the danny ainge playbook of leaking lots of ideas so it looks like they're active even if they're not planning to do much

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 18:49 (two years ago)

Sources: Wizards, Celtics and Clippers are in strong talks on a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington and Malcolm Brogdon to Los Angeles. Sides are still working through details and Porzingis’ $36M player option.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 21, 2023

brad has a pretty good track record as GM so far but i’m pretty shocked they’re the ones who looked at zinger’s season & think it will translate to a contending team

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:03 (two years ago)

i get it in theory like instead of having one big who can shoot threes and one who can protect the rim you get one guy who can theoretically do both. and bcuz of his floor spacing you could prob play him w/ horford or rob williams, again in theory

but the last time we saw zinger in the playoffs he was essentially unplayable on both sides of the ball so this would be a big leap of faith for a team w/ boston’s aspirations
