I’m gonna “watch some film” on scoot today but it doesn’t seem crazy to me to prefer the guy who actually put up good numbers last season and also isn’t 6-2
― k3vin k., Wednesday, June 21, 2023 11:43 AM (fifteen minutes ago)
generally speaking if you're out on a limb w/ the charlotte hornets you prob want to be scrambling back to safety but maybe this is the one time they're right...

vibe check
scoot henderson: amazing name
brandon miller: accomplice to a homicide
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:15 (two years ago)
scoot's got a bit of westbrook, ja, pre-injury derrick rose, chris paul. he's not a steph or dame type point which is obv the best case scenario for a pg leading your team, but he should be an all-star at some point in his career. his ability to put pressure on the rim, shoot the midrange, and his playmaking are really impressive. if the hornets were a competent franchise it wouldnt be a discussion. and if they dont like the fit with lamelo, they should trade lamelo.
― slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:20 (two years ago)
miller's stats were good not great, he shot only 43% from two, notoriously was a poor finisher at the basket & isn't a great athlete. he's a very good three point shooter tho. there's some jabari smith jr, harrison barnes, andrew wiggins vibes to his profile frankly
scoot meanwhile is said to be a plus plus athlete for a PG... was listening to hollinger say he's not quite at russell westbrook's level but is comparable to derrick rose or john wall. he's also by all accounts a legitimately good basketball player already as a teenager, was just running a quasi-pro team which is a higher level of ball than miller
to me it seems like scoot has the skills and mentality to be a high floor prospect while also having the athletic upside of a high ceiling prospect. whereas miller has the high floor bcuz of the size & shooting but maybe not the athleticism or mentality to be a star wing player... again we return to the wiggins, barnes, smith jr type player
of course i'm synthesizing things i've been reading/hearing about these guys, i'm not a scout myself. but i think that's largely accurate

i'll also note for anyone interested in doing some amateur scouting reports & such that there is a dedicated draft thread where our takes can be preserved for time...

peak rose was a better pure athlete than westbrook, russ is just a maniac
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:27 (two years ago)
one of the best ever at playing athletically/physically
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:28 (two years ago)
i think russ has the insane first step and acceleration that is like at the top in the history of the league whereas w/ rose it's the leaping ability
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:30 (two years ago)
scoot is kind of a maniac which bodes well for his career as a normal-sized human playing basketball
― slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:31 (two years ago)
thx for the video, seems like the comps are pretty obvious -- rose, wall, westbrook, ja etc. he looks like he'll be fun to watch. being undersized and not really shooting or playing defense is a bit of a red flag for me, though of course he could get better, by all accounts he seems to be a hard worker. I'm not saying it would be wrong to take a guy like that second, when it comes down to it the draft is really just a crapshoot, but to me that's not the type of player that you're seeing on a lot of championship contending teams
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:42 (two years ago)
seems like a guy who should be able to defend, shooting is the big question mark, mid range shot seems good but can he extend it to the three point line, pretty big question mark, hes not under sized as outline up thread
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:46 (two years ago)
isnt he 6-2 why did u say 6-4
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:47 (two years ago)
i didnt i said he has better size than an average nba 6-4 guy
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:49 (two years ago)
player one: 6-4 with 6-7 wingspanplayer two 6-2 with 6-9 wingspan
who has better size?
ah ok I see
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:51 (two years ago)
5-6 guy with 9-6 wingspan is the next evolution

― ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 17:29 (two years ago)
player one is nba champ jamal murray btw player two is scoot
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 17:37 (two years ago)
but murray can shoot very well is more the issue
i remember wanting the celtics to draft murray that year. jaylen ended up being fine too though

Sources: Wizards, Celtics and Clippers are in strong talks on a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington and Malcolm Brogdon to Los Angeles. Sides are still working through details and Porzingis’ $36M player option.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 21, 2023
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:03 (two years ago)
i get it in theory like instead of having one big who can shoot threes and one who can protect the rim you get one guy who can theoretically do both. and bcuz of his floor spacing you could prob play him w/ horford or rob williams, again in theory but the last time we saw zinger in the playoffs he was essentially unplayable on both sides of the ball so this would be a big leap of faith for a team w/ boston’s aspirations
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:07 (two years ago)
i mean they dont need him to be a star, but to be clear im not a fan
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:11 (two years ago)
I think this should absolutely happen.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:14 (two years ago)
the mavs didn’t need him to be a star either, in all reality. they just needed him to not be a complete anchor on their team & he couldn’t even clear that bari’m not gonna sit here & pretend like i watched much wizards this year so maybe zinger turned a new leaf in a real way. i’m just generally skeptical of the idea that a guy who got salary dumped by a contending team and then put up one good season on a bad team now again has real value as a playoff player. but situations change how guys are perceived & maybe boston would be a good one for him who knows
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:15 (two years ago)
the mavs did need him to be a star or at least that was their idea, being one of three bigs on a good defensive team would be a pretty different situation
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:29 (two years ago)
the big issue with zinger is he has an absolutely terrible injury history, celtics im sure are thinking theyd just not play him that much
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:32 (two years ago)
and if this trade were to happen as reported theres also a big salary aspect theyd get one year of zinger rather than two of brogdon avoiding the famous second apron
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:33 (two years ago)
if it's just a one year flier on zinger that would be a lot more sensible but i can't figure out why he'd not want to sign a big deal this summer. maybe the market for him as a FA was light tho & this would be his pivot
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:51 (two years ago)
the mavs did need him to be a star or at least that was their idea
― lag∞n, Wednesday, June 21, 2023 3:29 PM (twenty-one minutes ago)
well they needed him to be a star if they were going to become one of the best teams in the NBA for multiple years. but to get to the west finals the year they did they didn't need any of their bigs to be stars, they just needed them to play defense and hit some threes, which is what the celtics would need from him, and he couldn't even do that. but there were prob other factors too... his health, being mad at luka & hating the situation etc
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 19:54 (two years ago)
they were wanting him to be mr big rim protector with four perimeter guys around him and he couldnt do it but there are other ways to play defense especially with a team like boston that has a lot of defensive talent, basically i think they way to think about this is a salary dump while picking up a high upside third big, and yeah i dont think theres a big contract out there for him, everyone knows the mavs just dumped him
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:04 (two years ago)
could all be nonsense tho who knows but when you start to hear a super detailed deal with three teams in it its prob more real
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:06 (two years ago)
he was coming back from ACL and could never really stay healthy or play consistent. He looked healthier this last season, more confident in his body. I think it just took him a while to get back to himself. still not sure he's a positive impact player but in theory he's a guy who can do a few things well.
― Spottie, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:08 (two years ago)
Porziņģis has been well-liked by teammates, coaches and team officials ever since the Wizards traded for him in February 2022. He’s had a positive influence on his young teammates, most notably forward Deni Avdija.
lol

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:24 (two years ago)
I like porzingis btw, he had by far the best season of his career last year. still plays good defense and has finally seemed to round out his offensive game: I think KOC said on his podcast that he actually had the best scoring efficiency on postups in the league last year. he’s only 27 and played 65 games last year. slam dunk trade for boston imo
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:27 (two years ago)
in one of my many, many otm posts in the unicorn thread I pointed out how porzingis’s media market distorted his perception, he was always overrated in new york but is now underrated. it is only fitting that he gets a big deal in boston so he can be overrated again
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:29 (two years ago)
seems like its happening big question for me is if it includes an extension for zinger
