they were wanting him to be mr big rim protector with four perimeter guys around him and he couldnt do it but there are other ways to play defense especially with a team like boston that has a lot of defensive talent, basically i think they way to think about this is a salary dump while picking up a high upside third big, and yeah i dont think theres a big contract out there for him, everyone knows the mavs just dumped him
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:04 (two years ago)
could all be nonsense tho who knows but when you start to hear a super detailed deal with three teams in it its prob more real
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:06 (two years ago)
he was coming back from ACL and could never really stay healthy or play consistent. He looked healthier this last season, more confident in his body. I think it just took him a while to get back to himself. still not sure he's a positive impact player but in theory he's a guy who can do a few things well.
― Spottie, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:08 (two years ago)
Porziņģis has been well-liked by teammates, coaches and team officials ever since the Wizards traded for him in February 2022. He’s had a positive influence on his young teammates, most notably forward Deni Avdija.
lol
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:23 (two years ago)
shouldve worked "mentoring" in there, disappointing performance
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:24 (two years ago)
I like porzingis btw, he had by far the best season of his career last year. still plays good defense and has finally seemed to round out his offensive game: I think KOC said on his podcast that he actually had the best scoring efficiency on postups in the league last year. he’s only 27 and played 65 games last year. slam dunk trade for boston imo
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:27 (two years ago)
in one of my many, many otm posts in the unicorn thread I pointed out how porzingis’s media market distorted his perception, he was always overrated in new york but is now underrated. it is only fitting that he gets a big deal in boston so he can be overrated again
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:29 (two years ago)
seems like its happening big question for me is if it includes an extension for zinger
Breaking: Celtics, Wizards, Clippers are closing in on a trade sending Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Malcolm Brogdon to L.A., and Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 21, 2023
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:39 (two years ago)
wiz are salting the earth huh
― Clay, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:41 (two years ago)
the extension or lack thereof is really important here
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:44 (two years ago)
it is very funny that they're doing this the year after the once-in-a-generation prospect becomes available
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:57 (two years ago)
yup, legendary stuff
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 21:19 (two years ago)
so does this mean the c's are giving up on horford or on timelord? no way they're keeping all three, right? right???
― fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 23:11 (two years ago)
Horf is getting near his expiration date, but zinger can't fill his shoes.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 23:15 (two years ago)
horford’s new contract frees up enough cash that keeping all three is tenable though this would seem like it means grant williams is gone
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 23:26 (two years ago)
Zinger deal done and he’s optin in, smart to Grizz, tyus to wiz
The Grizzlies are sending 2023 and 2024 first-round picks to the Celtics, sources tell ESPN. Grizzlies are sending No. 25 on Thursday night and 2024 pick via Golden State for Smart.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 22, 2023
― Spottie, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:08 (two years ago)
wiz traded beal and zinger in order to rebuild and got zero firsts back
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:10 (two years ago)
so they added a player I like and got rid of the one I don't....interesting
― frogbs, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:11 (two years ago)
realized i was posting on the draft thread about this anyway i do not support trading marcus and im mad
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:12 (two years ago)
Marcus should retire
― New No-No Bettencourt (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:13 (two years ago)
It’s really weird he’s gonna be ona different team next year
― Spottie, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:18 (two years ago)
this is a very sad day
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:18 (two years ago)
i mean the guy literally bleeds dyes his hair celtics green
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:19 (two years ago)
i am down with this, smarts never been good enough to get too attached to
― ciderpress, Thursday, 22 June 2023 04:43 (two years ago)
He's basically the guy Brooks wishes he was.
― Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Thursday, 22 June 2023 05:10 (two years ago)
I don’t understand why Memphis game up two picks here
― Spottie, Thursday, 22 June 2023 05:20 (two years ago)
i do not support trading marcus and im mad
i, too, am mad.
no no no no no no no no no no no no no.
i kinda liked the brogdon version of this trade. i’m kinda thinking of murdering someone right now.
― fact checking cuz, Thursday, 22 June 2023 05:45 (two years ago)
i don’t have an emotional connection to marcus smart so it’s easy for me to say this but getting two firsts — and not just two firsts but two consecutive firsts — for him coming off a year ppl didn’t think was that great & a bit of an invisible playoffs feels like a pretty good move for boston. there’s a lot of wear and tear on those tires that being said, it’s also true that brogdon’s medicals are bad enough to have killed a trade that would have kept smart on the team. maybe brogdon still had trade value to other teams but they might also be stuck w/ relying on him to stay healthy for 3-4 rounds
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 06:33 (two years ago)
still has*
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 06:39 (two years ago)
kind of a nice haul for the celtics to get zinger and 2 firsts
― k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2023 09:55 (two years ago)
the wiz now have tyus jokes and monte morris, seems a bit redundant. if bruce brown doesn’t re-sign I’d love for the nuggets to get one of them
― k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2023 09:57 (two years ago)
i was kind of hoping they’d trade marcus this offseason. it was time.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 June 2023 10:43 (two years ago)
I feel like the only thing making this a good trade for the Celts are those picks. I could see Zinger, assuming he stays healthy, putting up numbers but not fitting in. That's also a lot tied up in Zinger, Rob, and Horford.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 22 June 2023 11:40 (two years ago)
this years pick 24 is not good, next years maybe, they got like half a quality first and one year of an overpaid always injured guy for marcus smart dpoy mr winning plays the pride a joy of the boston celtics, and it should be said just from a basketball perspective a pretty good playmaker on a team that needs more of it not less
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 12:03 (two years ago)
for sure it feels like they reshaped the roster but haven’t actually addressed roster holes, per se. like they still have to find another guard right? the brogdon injury insurance can’t just be pritchard smart averaged 34 mpg in the heat series, brogdon averaged 19. smart played 35 mins in game 7, brogdon played 7
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:31 (two years ago)
i think pritchard is fine as a third guard especially since theyll prob be playing bigger now and tbf brogdon was injured in the heat series but yeah as to the general point i dont think they really addressed their issues, and they traded away the guy everyone fuckin loves!!
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:44 (two years ago)
wouldnt be surprised if theres more to come tho i guess theyve got picks for every season now so they can trade a lot maybe theyre going to get dame
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:45 (two years ago)
feel like it should be an nba axiom like dont trade old for young to not trade your guy whos got the most dog in him
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:46 (two years ago)
i wonder if there were any iterations of this trade where boston got back tyus jones
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:48 (two years ago)
idk they were def trying to unload a guard but yeah having his passing mightve been good
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 13:50 (two years ago)
also i just dont like zinger as player and as a guy, last couple years teams after they got rid of kanter were finally free of guys i do not like which was nice, but it did have guys i do like like marcus smart
smart averaged 34 mpg in the heat series, brogdon averaged 19. smart played 35 mins in game 7, brogdon played 7
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 22 June 2023 14:01 (two years ago)
with cad on this one, smart constantly being upsold due to ~intangibles~ was going to become a liability the moment he starts to decline. better to rip off the bandaid now
― ciderpress, Thursday, 22 June 2023 14:03 (two years ago)
smh heartless
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 14:16 (two years ago)
the minutes played in the ECF by smart & brogdon aren’t irrelevant. brogdon isn’t just a normal injured guy he has notoriously some of the worst medicals in the league that just scuttled a trade less than 24 hours ago. his most recent injury was not related to his chronic issues but i don’t think you can just pencil him in for 35 mpg in round 3 of the playoffs. if he’s healthy great but you need a real plan b for the postseason, it can’t just be rolling pritchard out there. i think they’ll be fine for the regular season & they still have assets so it’s not a dire situation or anything but for as much as i see how they had too many good guards for the amount of minutes available, i still think they need to find another good guard now bcuz brogdon is a dice roll to me
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 14:35 (two years ago)
for all of smart’s flaws he was a really reliable postseason player. the offense would come and go but you knew he was gonna play hard, play a ton, and contribute heavily on defense. the celtics are giving that up in favor of two guys who for diff and similar reasons i can’t say are very reliable. that doesn’t make it a bad trade or a reason not to do the trade but it adds a real element of risk that they prob need to address still i do applaud them for getting ahead of a potential age related crash in horford’s play & they are insuring against rob’s injury history too. and absorbing some of the skillset loss from grant williams walkingto be clear i don’t think it’s a bad trade, there’s just prob an equal amount of stuff in the pro and con column for me, and a lot of it theoretical on both ends so we’ll see how it plays out
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 14:45 (two years ago)
i think i like this from memphis' side. there is a chance boston is selling high on smart but he's only 29, they'll prob get at least two pretty good or better years out of him. they don't need another pick in the 20s they're already overloaded w/ young guys who may not be good. idk what the protections are on the warriors pick it could be juicy but you do have to give something up to get something. they prob need to find a real PG themselves tho at least for the first quarter of the season
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 15:11 (two years ago)
2024 first round draft pick from Golden StateGolden State's 1st round pick to Memphis protected for selections 1-4 in 2024 and 1 in 2025 and unprotected in 2026 [Golden State-Memphis, 7/7/2019]
light protections on this one, of all the various bets being made across this deal boston getting some real upside on a mediocre to bad warriors regular season is nifty
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 June 2023 15:13 (two years ago)
yeah couple few warriors mishaps and that pick could be nice
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 June 2023 15:35 (two years ago)
miami & the lakers have picks just outside the lottery and also advanced very far in the playoffs. obv too early to say whether coming out of the play in to win 2-3 rounds is a repeatable path, and it's hard to imagine any teams tanking into the playoff in order to get a better draft pick while also trying to compete in the playoffs. but it does add a little wrinkle to something like this warriors pick where it could be a "win" for both sides if the warriors ended up in the play in but advanced a few rounds anyway while boston got the 16th or 17th pick
