this is off topic but can I say that Pat McAfee's twin affectations of always wearing tank tops and always standing up drives me up a fucking wall?

Keeping mark Jackson and letting JVG go is some kinda cruel joke

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Friday, 30 June 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link

this is bs. jeff may land at tnt?

further down that article mentions doc rivers as a dark horse to fill jvg's chair. i'm sure that won't happen but just the thought of listening to doc's rasp for 2.5 hrs every week...

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 30 June 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

Tragic. He’s been the proxy for the skeptical (and sometimes cynical) basketball fan (e.g., us)! He is also way more appreciative of the strangeness of NBA culture than Breen or Jackson (and nearly everyone else at ESPN). He’s a perfect fit for TNT.

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 30 June 2023 16:00 (one year ago) link

My reviews of the former professionals that I believe work for ESPN:

Richard Jefferson: charming, acceptable basketball takes
JJ Reddick: insufferable, decent (improving) basketball takes
Kendrick Perkins: disaster
Vince Cater: charming, bad basketball takes
Jon Barry: insufferable, decent basketball takes
Caron Butler: boring

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 30 June 2023 16:10 (one year ago) link

i think jefferson’s boring

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 June 2023 16:15 (one year ago) link

i think RJ is my single least favorite NBA TV personality, he’s just remarkably smug while having nothing insightful or interesting to say. but also if you told me that perk’s CTE level takes are the worst thing on TV right now i couldn’t argue with you

the list above is why i’ve consistently taken slings and arrows in my unwavering standom of inside the NBA

J0rdan S., Friday, 30 June 2023 16:33 (one year ago) link

the only NBA studio person ESPN employs who is worth a shit is tim legler but you can only catch him on the SVP sportscenter which is also the only good studio show on ESPN regardless of the sport

J0rdan S., Friday, 30 June 2023 16:35 (one year ago) link

yeah the inside crew laps those guys over and over

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Friday, 30 June 2023 16:35 (one year ago) link

wtf why is Mark Jackson not the one being let go???!

octobeard, Friday, 30 June 2023 16:37 (one year ago) link

yeah i really hate richard jefferson

on twitter there's a lot of hate for doris burke and all this "she's only staying because she's a woman" shit :/

Legler rules

people need to realize that these decisions are being made based on a spreadsheet with all their salaries in it and nothing else

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 June 2023 16:53 (one year ago) link

i like rj and do not understand the hate, i honestly dont know who the market is for perk, jj is p smaht about stuff but i think comes off like a dick bc hes a dukie.

espn is just p sterile, trying to find some formula of ex-jocks (some pros and some wannabes who became talk radio assholes) in suits and it never works bc they have no chemistry. inside the nba works because they took big star personalities like barkley and let them build rapport. espn is like watching 4 dads who have never met each other try and talk about sports before their kids' game starts.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Friday, 30 June 2023 17:05 (one year ago) link

im with jordan rj is repugnant completely swagless fool who thinks hes the shit

glad jaylen got that ja morant interview in before this happened.

rj, i liked him better after i heard him on a podcast where he was allowed to swear.

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 June 2023 17:09 (one year ago) link

the thing that puts him over the top from being an ordinary pointless talking head for me is hes kind of a dick, like be humble your not too great

lag∞n, Friday, 30 June 2023 17:11 (one year ago) link

jalen could probably figure something out with the ringer as he and bill are buds.

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Friday, 30 June 2023 17:24 (one year ago) link

i just hope even tho hes not on espn anymore twitter still makes fun of jalens hair/whole deal

lag∞n, Friday, 30 June 2023 17:26 (one year ago) link

very perplexing hairline

some classic stuff from nick friedell on the zach lowe bulls podcast from the other day. howling uproariously when zach says “in fairness, lavine is a great scorer…”

— Mark Johnson (@MarkJohnson777) June 30, 2023

espn laid friedell off, i’m hurt

J0rdan S., Saturday, 1 July 2023 06:01 (one year ago) link

Very sad about Steve Young also getting the boot. Damn.

octobeard, Saturday, 1 July 2023 06:32 (one year ago) link

wtf friedell rules

call all destroyer, Saturday, 1 July 2023 11:41 (one year ago) link

His voice hurts my ears.

Jeff, Saturday, 1 July 2023 13:40 (one year ago) link

I'm just going to complain about the Athletic's site, I can't think of a good reason why it loads so slowly.

Last of the Mojitos (Leee), Saturday, 1 July 2023 16:12 (one year ago) link

the culprit is always third party ad shit, tho ive seen much worse than this so idk why its so slow

lag∞n, Saturday, 1 July 2023 16:37 (one year ago) link

i have no load issues with them, is it browser/adblocker issues?

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Saturday, 1 July 2023 16:39 (one year ago) link

Shouldn't be adblocker because it's most egregious on mobile browsers, on which I don't have them installed. What bugs me is that the page loads really slowly and doesn't seem responsive till everything loads -- I can't click articles right away and in my impatience I always end up going to the wrong link.

Last of the Mojitos (Leee), Saturday, 1 July 2023 19:07 (one year ago) link

huh, a few days ago i was trying to use the app on my ipad and it couldn't even scroll an article smoothly, but then i switched to the website on safari (with no ad blockers) and it was fine. it does seem like they've gunked things up lately so that they can serve me the same bleu de chanel ad 12 times in a row.

circles, Saturday, 1 July 2023 21:16 (one year ago) link

Athletic is bad now

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Saturday, 1 July 2023 23:14 (one year ago) link

Not that great. Like Hollinger, but that’s it.

Jeff, Saturday, 1 July 2023 23:28 (one year ago) link

they have two celtics writers which is nice them plus hollinger is what i read there mostly

lag∞n, Saturday, 1 July 2023 23:30 (one year ago) link

yeah I'm pretty much just in for the Timberwolves and Vikings beat writers

Reader mode in Firefox is key for me reading both NY times and The Athletic. Especially on mobile

octobeard, Saturday, 1 July 2023 23:57 (one year ago) link

NBA coverage is not the Athletic's strong suit

very sneaky cis (symsymsym), Sunday, 2 July 2023 00:45 (one year ago) link

also, all the comments on their NBA articles sound like hockey fans' opinions about basketball, which I've already been deeply overexposed to in this country

very sneaky cis (symsymsym), Sunday, 2 July 2023 00:47 (one year ago) link

two weeks pass...

Sports podcasters, I have a request.

If you are discussing a player for a long time, please use that player’s name more than once at the start of the discussion. As a listener, it can be a difficult game of “Guess Who?” if you’re multitasking and miss the name drop at the start.

— Evan Zaucha (@EZ_Hoops) July 19, 2023

This. So much this.
