“Dame wants to play for Miami & only Miami, I’ve been continually told since Sat. I'm told there are over 5 teams interested in a potential multi-team trade that could get it done. Won't be today or tomorrow or perhaps the next day, but I believe he’s going to Miami” @MarcJSpears https://t.co/4v5cpQIUwo pic.twitter.com/eIUfixNdaM

Nikola Jovic can see the Heat's next big thing when he looks in the mirror amid summer schooling. https://t.co/aYSqDZMbfe Heat summer-league coach Caron Butler, "Even with the weight gain and the muscle and all that, he still is so mobile. He can create an advantage immediately."

it’s interesting to me that there has been credible (seeming) reporting that the nets will take herro in a 3 team trade but no real reporting that the nets are actually trying to get dame himself

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:48 (two years ago)

maybe theyre trying to actually build this time, wised up, wouldnt be surprised considering how poorly their superteam went

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

i mean *hubie voice* you look at dame 32 years old not great size insane contract quasi troubling injury history whoever trades for him really has to be ready to contend now

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:51 (two years ago)

my hypothesis of what’s happening right now is that the heat, blazers and nets have agreed on a dame to miami, herro to brooklyn & picks to portland trade but each team is trying to get one of the others to also take on unsavory salary (nurkic for portland, simmons for brooklyn & take your pick for the heat) and none of the teams actually want to do that, thus the hold up bcuz we’re in mexican stand-off territory between the three and/or bcuz they’re trying to work out compensation w/ random 4th or 5th teams to re-route the bad salary

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:55 (two years ago)

i saw someone point out on twitter that before the 06 season the heat did a 5 team trade to get antoine walker, white chocolate and james posey. some great names here

he Miami HEAT announced today that they have acquired All-Star forward Antoine Walker from the Boston Celtics, guard Jason Williams, forward James Posey, and guard Andre Emmett from the Memphis Grizzlies and the draft rights to center Roberto Duenas from the New Orleans Hornets in a five-team trade. The HEAT traded Eddie Jones to the Memphis Grizzlies, Rasual Butler to the New Orleans Hornets, and a 2006 second round draft pick, a conditional second round draft pick, Qyntel Woods and the draft rights to Albert Miralles to the Boston Celtics. Additionally, Memphis sent Greg Ostertag to the Utah Jazz and the Jazz sent Curtis Borchardt to the Celtics, Raul Lopez to the Grizzlies and Kirk Snyder to the Hornets.

i did not remember that antoine walker was on that heat champ team

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:06 (two years ago)

antoine walker & jason williams were both starters on that team and gary payton was the main bench guy w/ posey. bizarre stuff

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:17 (two years ago)

toine shot 6-17 and 0-6 from three in the clinching game, he went out a legend

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:18 (two years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:19 (two years ago)

man those box scores are crazy

43 and 36 for wade in the final 2 games shooting 37-46 from the line lmfao

shaq put up 9 points and 12 boards on 4-11 shooting in the clincher

he averaged 14 and 10 in that series on only 9 FGA per game ... talk about a finals performance that has been lost to history

and now closing these tabs before i get no work done for the next 2 hours

blazers beat writer for the oregonian…

As I’ve been saying …

Damian is going to Miami. https://t.co/8yGf0KOaaA

idk

Ahh, but I have been for three years.

I called all of this in 2020.

The Blazers didn’t get the job done. Lillard wants out and has the power to determine where.

Now the Blazers and Miami must figure it out.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 16:38 (two years ago)

does he really have power to decide? hes under contract for 4 years and they could just say fuck it and let him mope while they tank and rebuild until they get an offer that makes sense for them.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 16:47 (two years ago)

even if dame doesn't have a no-trade clause, he has the 'soft power' of being universally respected around the league and loved by the fans. if there's a way to get him to the heat it'll happen, because if it takes a multi-team deal to smooth the way, then gms on other teams will look at hopping onto this trade as an opportunity to shift their rosters around, remove redundant players, dump contracts, or improve their future assets.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:13 (two years ago)

his team is obvs working a gambit to depress the market which could work, especially if the market isnt quite as strong as one might think anyway due to the aforementioned contract/age/injury sitch, feel like if miami could get four firsts and offer some swaps it might be close enough so portland just says fuck it, fwiw portland has said they want a good player back and theyre going to take offers from everyone so idk if theyre serious about that or what, all the noise seems to be coming from dames camp at this point but if you take what the blazers have said seriously theyre not just going to ship him to miami cause he wants it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:17 (two years ago)

i feel like the subtext of this whole situation is that front offices believe that the best player on your NBA team (especially one of dame's stature) is so important to everything you do as a franchise that if that player is pissed off about having to show show up to work for you, it just makes the entire enterprise untenable. i think this contrasts w/ football or baseball where you're one of 30 or 80 players, by definition players in those sports have less leverage than NBA players... NFL QBs can prob do this kinda stuff but that's about it. maybe if like mike trout was being traded the angels would work w/ him -- but also those sports have real free agency which NBA owners decided to kill in favor of giving their best players contracts they can't say no to

i'm not saying i agree w/ that line of thinking or that a team shouldn't challenge this convention. but all the reporters who repeat front office conventional wisdom back to the public in so many ways all seem to be in alignment that if you're acquiring a superstar face of the franchise type guy, he needs to be all in w/ your team or else it's not worth doing the trade. it's the same song & dance we went thru w/ KD who was also under a 4 year contract & unlike dame had the added benefit of fitting on any roster in the league. and yet the bidding for him was a 2 or maybe even 1 team market

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

that reminds me, are they still paying Giannis's brother?

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, July 5, 2023 11:36 AM (forty minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

they sure are. I know he's bad but I still kinda like him. maybe its just because I have a Pavlovian response to seeing him out there, since he only comes out when the Bucks are up 20+ (also when they're down that many, but that doesn't happen too often). plus he's really good at fouling people

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:23 (two years ago)

all that stuff about needing the star to be happy is true but if youre looking at tyler herro and two miami firsts for dame i think you can afford to wait and see if anything changes

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:28 (two years ago)

unless miami can work some magic to get a decent offer together he prob should just expand his list of acceptable teams, there are other nice teams its doesnt have to be the heat

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:29 (two years ago)

gotta say too if i were the blazers front office this media blitz would be pissing me off, as would dames timing on the trade demand, mr loyalty straight fucking you over in multiple ways

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:31 (two years ago)

he prob should just expand his list of acceptable teams

he can afford a wait and see attitude for now. once it's apparent that miami and pdx have hit a wall and can't find a mutually acceptable path forward, but one or more other offers are acceptable to pdx, then he can give his input on the remaining destinations. at least that's what I'd do.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:37 (two years ago)

yeah

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:40 (two years ago)

maybe if like mike trout was being traded the angels would work w/ him

MLB is such a different beast, there really isn't a such thing as an "untradeable" player since WAR is a pretty solid metric that tells you exactly how much a guy is worth, and baseball is a sport where no one guy can singlehandedly get you into the playoffs. I mean if there was it would be Ohtani who is having one of the most insane seasons in MLB history and still the Angels probably won't make it. it's pretty rare that a Top 10 NBA player just doesn't make the playoffs, idk I might be a little worried about what Dame can really do for you at this point, especially since he may be entering that phase in his career where he's just hurt a lot of the time

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:43 (two years ago)

here a question could you get two firsts for herro jovic and jaquez, doesnt seem out of the question, but theyd prob be shitty heavily protected first, is portland willing to trade dame for picks that could easily just be total air

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:44 (two years ago)

miami mightve had an easier time if dame made his request a few days earlier too lol

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:45 (two years ago)

yeah i think the compensation aspect of the heat’s offer is being overplayed. it’s true that teams such as brooklyn, knicks etc can offer more picks & better picks but i think the heat will alter the protections on the pick they owe to OKC which frees up a third of their own firsts. i think herro can be spun for a first, even if it’s not a premium pick. so that’s 4 firsts plus jovic and/or jacquez… i think the heat can make a pretty fair offer in terms of picks & players. like i said earlier i think the real issue is that the blazers want to get off nurkic’s salary, and if brooklyn is involved they’ll want to get off simmons, but the heat bcuz of the second apron have no interest in taking on even more money on top of dame’s contract which is the craziest contract in the trade even as bad as those other contracts are

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:04 (two years ago)

yeah i think if they can get to four firsts and salary relief thats looking a lot better

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:05 (two years ago)

reading the tea leaves at the moment i feel like this is headed towards something like

miami gets dame
brooklyn gets herro
portland gets 3 firsts and jovic
spurs get nurkic + a first
okc gets simmons + a first

i picked those last two teams just bcuz they're the obvious cap space teams but there's prob other teams who'd be willing to play that role. but i think there's one or two teams brought in to take on the bad money in exchange for some of the draft compensation that would otherwise all go to portland

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:14 (two years ago)

three firsts and jovic is pretty rough, particularly in the context of the other recent big trades

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:15 (two years ago)

i think something more like one of those other firsts and jaquez goes portlands way and one of those other teams gets two seconds

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:17 (two years ago)

I hear jovic can create an advantage immediately, if that helps.

New No-No Bettencourt (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:19 (two years ago)

yeah. i'm just spitballing. but i do think if they want to move off nurkic they have to relinquish one of the firsts that will be in the deal. maybe one of their own goes out heavily protected. there's prob a thousand different permutations. i just don't see how the heat can take on nurkic + dame... the heat are getting the best player but they also have a legitimate argument that taking on a contract paying a guy $60m per year is also worth something too

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:19 (two years ago)

i personally wouldnt do even the best version of that deal if i were portland just cause the firsts are gonna be bad, you really want all unprotected picks in this deal, and preferably non miami ones, tho i guess theres an argument to be made that once dame and jimmy age out miami will be bad, but i just wouldnt trust the heat to bottom out

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:22 (two years ago)

doubt protland will send a first out with nurkic if only for appearances sake, you really want to make it look like you got as much as possible

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:23 (two years ago)

if i had a $20 billion net worth thanks to microsoft i would just say, yeah we can keep nurkic around in exchange for more draft picks. but i don't have $20 billion so what do i know

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:23 (two years ago)

gotta get $20b then let us know

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:24 (two years ago)

when the heat traded for dragic they gave up a protected pick (2018) and unprotected pick (2021)

funnily enough both those picks were used to get mikael bridges -- the 2018 pick became no 16, which phoenix used to select zhaire smith who was obv flipped w/ miami's 2021 first for bridges

that 2021 first ended up being no 18 overall -- okc ended up w/ that pick eventually and took tre mann

the heat also traded a first in the butler deal -- at the time the reports said it was miami's 2023 lottery protected first but obviously miami drafted w/ their own pick outside the lottery so i have no idea what happened there. reverse engineering trade protections and stuff is a bit wacky

According to source: Heat's 2023 first-round pick dealt to the Clippers is lottery protected in 2023. If doesn't convey in 2023, also lottery protected in 2024. If doesn't convey in 2024, also lottery protected in 2025. Then unprotected in 2026.

— Anthony Chiang (@Anthony_Chiang) July 2, 2019

moral of the story is that the recent history of the heat's picks are that they're late lottery to mid first round at best and if you have the pick and not them you're prob looking mid first round

as you say you could make the argument their downside of a butler/dame era is prob greater than past years but ppl were saying that about the heat in that weird waiters era and it never played out. here's same vecenie writing in 2018 about how the heat's 2021 unprocteted pick is "extremely valued leaguewide," funny article to read back in general

https://theathletic.com/407741/2018/06/25/why-the-unprotected-2021-miami-heat-first-round-pick-is-an-incredibly-uncertain-yet-valuable-asset-league-wide/
