i'm not a conspiratorial type but this jvg thing is interesting--like all the talk about an unbiased perspective fly on the wall, anyone who's been part of any type of organization knows that's not a real thing. he's there because someone wants him to be there and to me the simplest explanation is they've pushed all the chips in on this team and there is a concern that the coaching staff isn't up to the challenge.

Same. I just sat through Blazers v Suns last night where PDX played what was close to an all-rookie lineup the entire game. At least half of them will be on two-way contracts and playing in the G-League this season. It was a weird mess of a game, but it let me see the deep end of the bench and try to attach unknown names to whatever on-court skills were on display.

thinking about the celtics subpar playmaking and how they didnt exactly address it with their offseason moves, marcus and jrue are prob similarly skilled playmakers and rob is a better passer than zinger, but then they did kind of address it obliquely by getting better at offense generally, like you can get better passers or you can get guys who create easier passes which is what they did, just as general offensive players jrue and zinger are much better than marcus and rob, they did lose grant and brogdon too tho both of them ended up being kind of inconsequential last year, but of course youd be happy to have them on your bench

celtics were pretty good at moving the ball last year which might be enough considering their new firepower, also just trading a bunch of jaylen offensive initiations for jrues will be a huge upgrade, jaylen sometimes has problems just getting started, and marcus was a way underrated playmaker but he was such a bad scorer that he couldnt put enough pressure on the d for it to really matter much

pretty sure this team will be meaningfully better than last years and im looking forward to watching them

seems like the situation is win-now enough where if mazzulla doesn’t pan out this year they might be looking for a guy with head coaching experience

welllll the globe beat guy did report that the conversation between jvg and brad started with a potential coaching role and ended up with the consulting thing. of course this could be anyone's decision (the reporting was deliberately vague), maybe jeff wasn't ready to go back to the full grind with travel and stuff or maybe it was determined that he'd be too big a presence in the second row of bench seats. but sounds like coaching was definitely discussed.

im sure hed take it i mean getting handed a contender is a good deal, but its just not a good idea

no it isn't, and i am sure a head coaching role wasn't on the table, but even as an assistant he'd probably just be too public of a presence. it would also fuck up charles lee and cassel who are on an upward trajectory and i'm sure want to be in circulation for future gigs.

btw im watching the game a lil bit behind but man the celtics have some guys this year, last year i thought they had some guys but this year the guys are guysier

re: the offense i think nate duncan's analysis makes sense to me, basically it might not be pretty but it should be effective because they should always have a mismatch somewhere on the floor given their size and skill.

having zinger as the third or fourth option is tough how do you help off of him hes already tall enough to shoot over almost everyone so how do you recover back to him and should you accomplish that he can put the ball on the floor

he gets clowned a little because he's had a weird career, but he can really score and i'm crossing my fingers that everything he's saying about just wanting to play on a winner is real

its prob legit makes sense from a career perspective for him, as to whether he can actually do the winning things guess well see

big thing for him besides staying healthy obvs is holding up on d offense should be easy

hes a bit of a gobert great around the basket but iffy on the perimeter, one good thing is the celtics have a great defensive team so theres room to cover for him

celtics running a fullcourt press sure why not

xp seems like no one is really being ambitious about crazy switching anymore...there are certainly individual matchups where you would worry about him holding up but as you say they should have enough overall talent on that end.

athletic article partially about tatum getting more serious about post play today, posting up is kind of dead but its still good to have another way to score for a guy who gets so much defensive attention, and he could turn some post ups into very makeable jumpers once hes backed his man down too, force double teams kick it out etc, also i just like him playing physical drawing fouls and so forth, hes kind of a beast now needs to push the physical advantage he has over a lot of defenders

yeah for guys of his size and skill level it's a good way to conserve some energy while also being dangerous to score, pass, or get fouled. i think the thing where you start outside the arc and either do a suicide drive at the basket or shoot a 3 has diminishing returns over time.

end of this celtics blowout scal and the new guy are talking about how pritchard hires guys in the offseason to play defense against him and scal gets kind of offended that he didnt call him and starts talking about how he has these arm pads that he wears when he training guys and then he talks about the arm pads a bunch apparently theyre quite robust "theyre great" he says

also "im the best guy in the boston area for this"

feeling like maybe payton went home for the summer thats why he didnt call scal

scal seems like he needs a lot of attention

you have to admit the scal one on one series was a great bit tho

it was good but he probably shouldn't make it his whole personality

hes such a doof lol but i love all the guys who think they can beat a professional basketball player in one on one just cause hes dumb looking classic material
