what is this weird Manningcast thing called Hoopervision with Quentin Richardson, Dorrell Wright and Metta World Peace?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 4 November 2023 00:47 (one year ago) link

feel like the thing that really separates the hoop collective from the pack is how seriously they take the topic, the nba is meaningful to them on an emotional level, it might be somewhat schtick but they do it good its convincing, and its not just like some sports radio yelling or hot takes bs its still analytical, windy being so disappointed in the bucks defense is the perfect example, but they all do it macmahon will get seriously exasperated at kyries antics, where every other smart guy pod is all hey luka is very good isnt that neat, and the more insidery stuff they get into behind the scenes drama the wider view of how it all works together etc is served well by the seriousness too, and that stuff is just good to mix in with the actual basketball talk too one can only take so much discussion of shot charts and so forth

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 November 2023 16:21 (one year ago) link

windy is even super serious about orchestrating the pod he wants to make it good and pro he cuts people off all the time like well get to that later, also i like how they kind of hate each other

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 November 2023 16:23 (one year ago) link

yeah they all do really care, and although i don’t think he would ever call it schtick, something windhorst has figured out is that sounding overly serious/invested in the bucks defense or a royce o’neill trade or whatever is how you make the audience care about those things too.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 4 November 2023 18:01 (one year ago) link

its dramatic which who doesnt like a lil drama

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 November 2023 18:28 (one year ago) link

they have great frenemy chemistry, you get the sense they do like each other a lot and enjoy needling each other. it’s the best when they make fun of windy because he’ll allow himself to get mad about it he’s a pretty easy target

k3vin k., Saturday, 4 November 2023 21:10 (one year ago) link

i like to think you can tell it's all in good fun and they're genuine friends bcuz they had a whole discussion at the end of a recent episode about how pelton replaced mcmahon on the post-harden trade pod & how windy called mcmahaon and cleared it w/ him but mcmahon was still talking about how they're already kicking him out of the crew. also windy says at one point "this won't make the pod" and i think it was like an extra 10-12 mins that ended up making it

the combination of them being smart about basketball in general plus being well sourced throughout the league plus actively covering beats and talking directly to players all season plus having a good chemistry together and being funny guys (mcmahaon is really quick witted on the fly) makes it the best basketball media product for me

the other thing i like about them is they really don't let teams off the hook. i was listening to the hollinger and duncan episode about the harden trade and they were slobbering all over morey for getting more for harden than he gave up to acquire him and how the sixers have all these options and this expiring and that expiring. meanwhile neither of them stopped and were like -- oh yeah and let's mention that both seasons ended in massive failure that embarrassed the city of philadelphia and wasted two of embiid's best years. the espn guys are more able to see the big emotional picture the way fans tend to while also being some of the best at covering the league down to the granular level

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 5 November 2023 18:59 (one year ago) link

windhorst and bontemps in particular have alluded to spending time together off the clock, like i think they mentioned going to a dodgers game this past season in LA--they seem like they're tight enough to know exactly how to drive each other nuts in a way that's usually fun and entertaining.

john and nate unfortunately still have a blind spot re: morey like a lot of guys who came up with an analytics bent, despite the fact that he hasn't been good at his job for a while now.

ok this appears to be sweet, it looks like if I start the game on League Pass through a VPN then I can disconnect from the VPN after it starts

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 7 November 2023 01:59 (one year ago) link

where can i find a good primer on vpns and specifically my intention to set up league pass through a roku. i have grudgingly accepted that while me 20 years ago could find my way around a computer with torrents and whatnot, i am now computer illiterate.

so ridiculous, in my zip code celtics are blacked out on league pass, though the one that starts about a 10 minute walk from me has no restrictions. i've been paying for cable as part of a triple play situation that just wasn't worth the effort to mess with but it's time. i intend to join the 21st century of hoop fans

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 04:16 (one year ago) link

I don't know if there's a way to use Roku and get League Pass local games w/a VPN. I'm using Surfshark, a VPN chrome extension (I paid for it) and watching League Pass on my Macbook

this says you may be able to use a VPN on your router instead of your Roku

I pay for YouTube TV to get national TV games/Bulls games. And league pass for everything else. So annoying. And expensive. But I cancel YouTube TV after basketball season.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 20:33 (one year ago) link

Does anyone else’s league pass streaming skip all the time?? I don’t have the issue with any other streaming service, but the NBA app on my tv sucks so bad.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 20:34 (one year ago) link

why dont you get league pass via youtubetv

I realized that I should have after I had already pad for LP for the whole season! Although, it was cheaper, BUT AT WHAT COST.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 21:52 (one year ago) link

sad, if its really annoying they do cut the price to $50 half way through the season iirc

lag∞n, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 22:56 (one year ago) link

I do remember having league pass issues at some point in the past though I can’t say I’ve really had a problem at all over the past couple seasons. maybe my problems were mainly in browser — I only watch on roku or on my phone these days. and it’s significantly cheaper than it was a few years ago

just when you think he's past his prime, Shams comes up with a classic

Developing: NBA teams are probing the availability of Bulls two-time All-Star Zach LaVine and there is increased openness from both sides about exploring a trade, sources say.

probe that availability, teams - the openness about exploring is increasing (per sources)

crossover!

With ESPN and TNT each airing one NBA In-Season Tournament semifinal game on December 7, the two networks are combining both their studio and game coverage for the games.

ESPN’s coverage begins at 4 p.m. with NBA Countdown. The cast of Malika Andrews, Stephen A. Smith, Michael Wilbon, Bob Myers, and Adrian Wojnarowski will be on-site in Las Vegas, and they’ll be joined “for an extended segment” by TNT’s Inside the NBA crew of Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Kevin O'Conner published this three days ago in the Ringer power rankings

4. Los Angeles Lakers
10-7 record, plus-0.5 net rating
Preseason ranking: no. 5

Austin Reaves has been put in more of a pass-first role coming off the bench in recent weeks, averaging more than six minutes of possession time and more than six assists per game. Reaves is effectively a 15-6-6 guy right now, but I wonder whether the Lakers could be getting more out of him by ramping up his usage even more. Reaves allows the Lakers to use LeBron James as a screener in different ways—on top of his unfathomable on-ball dominance at 38 years old—which has led to some cutting opportunities in what’s becoming a juicy chemistry. And Reaves is also finding Anthony Davis in his spots, using his own gravity as an offensive threat to deliver the ball to AD. Following a slow start to the year, Reaves is becoming the third star the Lakers need. And soon, injured players will return to the lineup. Things are trending up.

i have a lot of love for hollinger & duncan, but i'm listening to the new org rankings podcast and they always do this incredibly maddening thing (hollinger in particular) when they talk about the sixers where they repeatedly praise morey for "getting out of" the ben simmmons & james harden situations and building "good" rosters but never mention that the whole point of trading for harden was to get embiid past round 2 of the playoffs and not only did they fail to do that, they failed in spectacular ways that brought shame upon the entire city of philadelphia. like, i just think the reality of what took place on the court should perhaps be mentioned maybe even just in passing

their ranking of the sixers org (have not appeared in the conference finals since the year 2000) ahead of the warriors org (4 titles in 7 years) was like, oh you guys really do have trouble seeing the forest for the trees when you get into transaction evaluation mode

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 1 December 2023 19:12 (eleven months ago) link

the mind control moreys got over the basketball commentariat should be studied in a laboratory

lag∞n, Friday, 1 December 2023 19:17 (eleven months ago) link

I thought the rankings were only in the rough timeframe since their last org rankings, not last x number of years. Not that I agree with them, but if you're just looking at current state and the outlook, it is a more sound argument.

Jeff, Friday, 1 December 2023 19:26 (eleven months ago) link

well they obviously do them yearly but listening to the convos they certainly seem to be taking the entire scope of the front office/organization's work into account, w/ some obvious weighting towards more recent history. but sixers-celtics game 7 was just this summer!

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 1 December 2023 19:28 (eleven months ago) link

nate did astutely note that ppl were going crazy over the sixers offseason last year esp the PJ tucker acquisition and actually he was harmful to them in the playoffs bcuz he is not guarded, yet this didn't seem to effect his opinion of the franchise much. he should've pushed much harder on this point after hollinger was like "tucker provided good value on his deal"

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 1 December 2023 19:30 (eleven months ago) link

i was glad nate pushed back even a little bit on the idea that the sixers are a good organization

enjoying the new hoop collective pod w windy, spears & bobby marks all telling stories of being on or covering extremely horrible NBA teams. at one point marks says with a straight face that he believes courtney lee was permanently scarred for the rest of his career by being traded from a magic team that made the finals to a nets team that started the next season 0-18. which, yeah…

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 13 December 2023 15:13 (eleven months ago) link

It was a good ep, especially considering it had Spears on it. I feel like my IQ drops 10 points every time I hear him speak.

i have been living under a rock, so maybe everyone else already knows, but jason concepcion and shea serrano have been doing a hoops podcast this season. it's called six trophies b/c they give out six "trophies" every week to stuff that happened, which as far podcast concepts go is eh, whatever, but if jason and shea talking about the week in hoops sounds good to you it is exactly what you'd expect.

circles, Thursday, 14 December 2023 12:03 (eleven months ago) link

bobby’s stories on this pod are killing me. he went to the kardashian/humphries wedding!!

every time he does war stories from his nets days i think to myself if anyone deserves to live in florida and pull down a couple hundred grand a year to talk about the salary cap on tv it’s this guy.

Barbosa had the pleasure of seeing the Timberwolves play the Orlando Magic when he went on a trip to Disney World in 2018, but he’s yet to make the pilgrimage to Minneapolis. “Unfortunately, I’ve never been in Minnesota, it’s my big dream,” he says. “My connection with the region is precisely because of the Timberwolves, even though it is miles away.”
