this is now triggering memories of heat announcer eric reid going out of his way to not call “dean wade” by his full name because it sounds too similar to “d wade” lol

shai’s full last name has to be murder for play by play guys trying to keep some rhythm to their calls

for sure but i feel like most announcers go out of their way to i.e. say giannis’ last name instead of calling him giannis, but that might be a respect thing for national or road team announcers. i think the bucks guy calls him giannis a lot. i think it’s the nickname aspect that is funny to me

i have noticed that w/giannis, i assumed there was some effort put in to combat any perception that people were avoiding learning how to pronounce african surname.
