Iowa came out hot as blazes, torched SC in the first quarter and built a 12 point lead, but since then it's been all SC pounding the boards and outscoring Iowa by about 16. I think that second quarter provides the better clue as to what the second half will look like. South Carolina's rebounding, bench depth and all around athleticism seems unbeatable unless Clark goes nuclear.

Clark’s passing is a joy to watch
hard agree.
and congrats to SC's women, who were perfect this season. as for Clark, she beat Maravich's record and is already a legend, so she has nothing to be down about.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 7 April 2024 21:16 (five months ago) link
Iowa made a run at it in the end there but I think they pressed too hard, had some dumb turnovers and Clark was just launching long range and badly contested shots. idk what they were supposed to do but you could tell they were mentally exhausted, kinda why you need a bench
― frogbs, Sunday, 7 April 2024 21:39 (five months ago) link
great game
― symsymsym, Sunday, 7 April 2024 21:40 (five months ago) link
SC's depth really allowed them to overcome the inevitable foul trouble from playing tough D.

John Calipari to Arkansas! Crazy. They go to Lexington next season.
― alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 05:20 (five months ago) link
people like john calipari never actually 'fail' but in the grand scheme of college basketball . . . that's rough
― mookieproof, Monday, 8 April 2024 05:57 (five months ago) link
calipari so outta here
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 12:20 (five months ago) link
guess its obvious tho i had not considered it since i dont really consider college ball but the ease of transferring these days makes it much easier to build good teams around upperclassmen
The NCAA tournament losses, one Big Dance win since 2019, refusing to embrace the transfer portal and continuing to build freshmen-focused rosters -- it all added up to a frustrated fan base.

Frustrated fan-base member here. This is good for everyone involved ... Kentucky, which saves a $33 million buyout ... and even Cal, who lands at a top 10? 15? college basketball job at a school with national championship pedigree/aspirations and at least one booster (Cal's pal the Tyson chicken family) willing to pony up to get there. The past 5 years have been a failure at UK, but I don't think anyone could characterize his full run there as a failure.
One nitpick on lagoon's point: Yes, he has continued to recruit one and dones and he built this year's team around them ... but it's not like he has shunned the transfer portal. The team that lost to St. Peter's two years ago was the oldest team in the country and included transfers from Iowa, Georgia, Davidson, Rhode Island and Creighton ... and they flamed out, too.
It's very clear that roster construction has changed in college hoops and Cal didn't adjust enough. But there are other/bigger issues at play with regard to how they've ended their seasons since 2019.
― alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:10 (five months ago) link
US college sports 'boosters' are mostly very horrible people, and in their pursuit of winning teams they've dumped tons of money on some very horrible coaches with Bobby Knight being the poster child. It's hard to have any sympathy at all for the coaches who embrace the system and reap the biggest rewards.

i don't think arkansas is a top 10 or 15 cbb job
― the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 April 2024 17:16 (five months ago) link
def a solid landing spot for him tho, he can still probably get a similar level of recruit
― the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 April 2024 17:22 (five months ago) link
yeah he brings a top ten job with him, especially since hes got the chicken man in his pocket
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:34 (five months ago) link
right, i just wouldn't say arkansas is a top 15 job on its own, since the job only opened after eric musselman left to coach usc (the one in california)

Now there's trouble busin' in from outta stateAnd the AD can't get no relief

i wld rather go to usc but arkansas is nice too
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:48 (five months ago) link
Let's name jobs better than Arkansas, understanding this is of course subjective:
KentuckyCarolinaKansasDukeArizonaUCONNMichiganMichigan StateTexasUCLASouthern Cal (I guess)VillanovaLouisville and (especially) Indiana are like Marty McFly's siblings fading away in that photo at the end of Back To The Future
that's 14, but i'm not so sure a coach leaves Arkansas for Indiana.
we're talking history, of course, and resources, nearby recruits, etc. i don't have enough info on NIL programs to consider them.
Zags? Houston? Virginia? Maryland? Ohio State? we're getting into dicey territory.
In addition to the Tyson chicken family, Arkansas has a *ton* of money it can tap into, and it *cares* about being good at basketball.
― alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:16 (five months ago) link
Florida, maybe.Syracuse? Not imo. But I suppose some people would think so.Illinois if you can get Chicago kids.
I might've underrated Maryland and Ohio State.
― alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:20 (five months ago) link
Point is Arkansas is right near #15 ... maybe it's #14, maybe it's #17. I almost put "top 20" but got excited. :)
― alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:21 (five months ago) link
Arkansas is 52nd in most recent final four appearance. A good Jimbo retirement job for college basketball's Jimbo.

Cal is a great car salesman but pretty meh as a strategic in game coach.
Cal recruits big throws them out there and if their magnificence wins out good, but switch things up in game rare to never.
Dude made much of his rep as big fish small pond conferences.
