they did really well finding gems like derrick white and dejounte murray at the end of the first round when they were still a competitive organization. their guard selections since then have been much spottier. branham continues to baffle me as he made basically no growth from one year to the next as an inefficient shooter with no other discernible skills. wesley still can’t shoot although he at least looks like a serviceable defensive point guard. and then there’s primo.

vassell is definitely their 2 guard moving forward and tre jones is at least a good backup, so it hasn’t been all bad news.

they need hoisters badly tho, hoping one of the kentucky guards will be available.

in my estimation the knicks didn’t have to give up very much to get this done. DDV is a good player but they had a lot of depth on the perimeter/wing so i don’t know if they’ll miss him in a huge way. KAT has many of the same flaws as randle and is just a better player and a much easier piece to fit into an offense. line ups with brunson, bridges, OG and KAT will do damage in the regular season, i think this makes the knicks better.

the question obviously is how far you can get in the playoffs with KAT as your 5. i’m sure the knicks think they can somewhat replicate playing KAT with a 5 a la gobert, but idk if i see robinson getting tons of minutes deep in the playoffs. and he is always hurt. i’m obviously skeptical that having KAT as your 5 in the playoffs is a good idea

i think DDV is a nice get for the wolves, they definitely needed some more bodies on the perimeter in the playoffs last year, they relied a lot on NAW imo. i don’t think randle is very good but playing him next to gobert makes some sense i guess. i worry for ant but he can probably make a lot of stuff work

i know this was primarily financially motivated but the wolves do have a more balanced roster now with DDV and dillingham, assuming he’s a plus for them. i don’t think they’re better though. it feels like randle will go out in another deal to me idk tim connelly is too good a GM to be riding w/ that into the playoffs

gonna miss having randle around, seems like an extremely good dude. and his random elevation into a great player really did put the knicks on the path they’re on. it’s a tough business

if the knicks plan is really to play kat a bunch at center well i dont love it, i mean its prob nbd for the regular season but in the offs seems pretty dicey, a lot depends on robinsons health which isnt great maybe the knicks make another move idk, tho with kat at center you do get to play three great defenders with og bridges hart, but youre still weak at the 1 and 5 which isnt a great combo, also kat makes way too much money

this trade is prob a solid upgrade for the knicks, getting a guy who can really score the ball is good for them, but adds on court and roster inflexibility long term so if it works thats great but if it doesnt theyre kinda stuck, if knicks fans/media turn on kat it could get ugly

og always injured too, thibs coaching, as a celtics fan this trade doesnt fill me with dread, but it does concern me a little bit

to me personally this is purely an opportunity cost situation for the knicks. they 1 for 1 replaced randle, DDV is a good player but it’s very conceivable the knicks could find another back up 2/3 by the deadline, and the pick seems like whatever

i find it hard to believe they’re a worse team, i just think the question is whether they ultimately could have done something else, but their argument is probably that this trade package is not netting you a player of KAT’s caliber elsewhere in the league

yeah especially weird since they made so many moves during that time, is kat the perfect guy for the team you had then and the team you have now, its not like hes some super versatile guy who can just fit in anywhere xp

I feel like Jordan's thing of like seeing the current wolves as connected to their long history of futility and failure & seeing that connection as like embodied in Karl Anthony Towns is probably correct but like - I liked those bad failed teams and I cheered for them, KAT seemed to genuinely like Minnesota and carried the team a bunch of times over the years, it's all very sad.
