i do like jalen johnson theres a good chance he outplays that contract at some point doesnt seem exactly like a steal but youve kind of got to give promising guys that fun max or at least thats been the conventional wisdom maybe thats changing or will change under the new apron regimes idk

people seem to think most of these guys took pretty team friendly deals. at the beginning of a new CBA i think it’s hard for us laymen to really grasp what is a good or bad contract. but $30m a year is not gonna be that huge of a salary, i guess

the new structure with the aprons def adds some uncertainty but i think the calculations with these rookie extensions are prob not that different signing guys who are on the upswing of their careers usually works out pretty well and even if it doesnt youre only allowed to offer them so much, thing that might be more affected is those second max deals the real big ones, already seen kat get traded cause that contract was just too big, will be interesting to see if teams are as willing to hand them out, also were already seeing changes at the low end teams not using their midlevel exemptions only carrying 14 guys players like lonnie walker or gary trent who in years past who at least couldve gotten a piece of a mid level deal are signing for the minimum or dont have deals at all yet

this embiid situation seems really bad preseason youve got nothing to do but get ready for the season he only played one preseason game and still couldnt do it his knee might just be cooked

I don't think he played any preseason games, which supposedly was always the plan. Last year he only played a single preseason game.

I mean it's not good, but if they keep him on ice the early part of the season and he is healthy for the stretch and playoffs that might be better than what has happened the last x number of years.

the part i still don't understand about this entire idea is that embiid famously can only stay in adequate NBA shape when regularly playing NBA basketball, and yet the plan is for him to intentionally play in fewer games, so that when he gets to the playoffs, he is 100% and ready to go. this makes me feel like i somehow have watched embiid's career more closely than the people actually running the sixers, which isn't true and isn't possible, and yet!!

He didn't look great in the Olympics and he shouldn't have played, but I think that was an Embiid call, not a Sixers call.

Agreed that they could maybe be clearer, but they did announce a load management plan (not going to play any b2bs this year) at the same time they said he wasn't going to play in the preseason. So I think it is "some highly calculated long term load management regimen" even if they haven't explicitly said that and maybe/probably it's not going to work.

teams are allowed to hold players out of international play for injury reasons fwiw, obvs there are more interpersonal political reasons for the sixers to let him do what he wants tho
