Then again, does he really love basketball or is he just appeasing his annoying dad
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Sunday, 19 May 2024 17:39 (five months ago) link
being on the lakers is a rare experience its showtime baby the best of the best if youre into that sort of thing, its prob less appealing to bronny than yr average nba prospect tho considering hes already rich and famous, his dad would be on the team (maybe he would like that idk feel like for most guys it would be a con), thered be a ton of media scrutiny about whether hes good enough or just riding his dads coattails, hes not good enough, could turn into a disaster
returning to college on the other hand hes big man on campus, still rich and famous but not intense espn scrutiny levels, gets to have fun at college with his pals, is good enough at basketball
― lag∞n, Sunday, 19 May 2024 17:56 (five months ago) link
seems like hes gonna do it tho
― lag∞n, Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:01 (five months ago) link
maybe he just wants to get it over with
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:05 (five months ago) link
i think on the recent hollinger-duncan pod, nate was comping bronny to jevon carter or a player like that. a back up 2 guard whose value comes from athleticism, hustle, smarts, defense and who, if it’s working, can shoot and do just enough on offense to keep himself afloat. makes sense to me. he does seem to have some genuine athletic tools despite being short, he just isn’t very skilled
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:19 (five months ago) link
i’m thinking of a player like miles mcbride… 6 foot 1 guard who was the 38th pick. was up and down between the NBA and g league for 2 years before breaking out once he could consistently hit threes. prob not ever gonna be a long term starter but can clearly be an important role player on a good team. ofc most guys like this wash out or are even more fringe roster guys than mcbride but you can at least envision a role for a player w/ bronny’s skillset
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:23 (five months ago) link
mcbride was much better in college tho. bronny needs to go to a not overly great college team where he can get a lot of reps w the ball in his hands but it seems like he will go the opposite direction (go pro and never be good enough to deserve ball handling reps)
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:24 (five months ago) link
if he could learn to shoot as good as mcbride hed prob be on to something, most guys cant do it tho
― lag∞n, Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:32 (five months ago) link
for sure & there is a certain level of anonymity that let’s you develop for 2 years without fans or the press really caring at all that bronny will never be afforded. he’d be playing in some of the most publicly scrutinized g league games ever

listened to a pod two guys who were college players speculating about why foreign players are dominating the nba at the mvp candidate level and they both agreed that theres too much emphasis on skill development kinda for its own sake isolated from the larger game your drew hanlen type situations, idk about that i think it might just be a flukey thing where you happen to have four really good foreign born players, shai from canada doesnt count, and in the european system they do tons of skill development tho its with their teams so maybe thats different, but embiid came up through the us prep-college system, giannis played on a small time euro team, luka played at the heart of the euro system in madrid, jokic stayed in serbia but still high level
kind burying the lead here the thing the mentioned thats pretty obvious but interesting is all those guy are huge and strong, american guys are too skinny lol, too much body fat measuring maybe its hard to be huge and lean

― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 13:57 (five months ago) link
maybe theres a distinction between skill development like working with a trainer on you side step three and working with your team doing drills to help you make in game reads, that makes sense
― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:00 (five months ago) link
can see a difference in how euro bigs develop all around games with on ball skills, shooting, etc while american guards still dominate as superior shooters
― polyamerie "it's more than this 1 thing" (m bison), Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:04 (five months ago) link
think also if you come up in high level european system which really only two out of the four guys theyre talking about did, youre just in a high level system, its like instead of playing for a prep school you were part of an nba org theyre better at doing basketball things eg they employ scientists, nba kinda tried to do that with the ignite but i dont think they did a very good job, if teams are developing their own guys seems like theres better motivation to get it right, rather than just something thrown together by the league
guess we can throw wemby into the convo too but also if you want to talk about a guy whos just a freak
― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:08 (five months ago) link
the only thing thats really definitively standing out here is those four guys are big and beefy, time for america to start eating stew again
― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:09 (five months ago) link
wonder if theyll do an nba youth system eventually now that youve got things like overtime elite where guys are getting paid whats the difference really
― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:14 (five months ago) link

the american high school and college systems have incentive systems where player development is more of a bonus than the goal

this is only tangentially related but there has been a similar backlash against quarterback overdevelopment in football. there was a time period where a lot of the top QB prospects were celebrated for having been taking private QB lessons since their early teens but when they ended up getting to major college football or the NFL they were too robotic, didn’t have functional athleticism, etc. christian hackenberg, josh rosen types. as guys like that flamed out and someone like mahomes showed up, you started to hear over QB coaching brought up as a negative, and teams started to look for more creative athletic gunslinger types.if you follow college football recruiting nowadays, playing multiple sports, having a certain rawness is considered a plus for a highly rated QB. playing baseball in particular intrigues bcuz you have to throw from different arm slots, you’re never taught to be this 5 step drop back then throw this perfect motion type QB. but even just playing basketball and getting out there and being an athlete is now viewed as better for development than spending all that time doing QB drills over and over in a non competitive setting ofc the negative downside of this is the zach wilson types who can’t do anything in the pocket and flame out. but the idea of extreme skill specialization — drew hanlen shit — has fallen out of favor w/ QBs
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:45 (five months ago) link
i think in the long term — like talking the next 10, 20, 30 years — the european system, if the argument is based on the idea that developing for the team is better for the individual in the long run than developing just for the individual, will have to constantly withstand, essentially, the allure of selfishness. which is to say that as the pipeline to NBA mega stardom becomes even more clear and more direct for european players, will european basketball writ large forever be able to convince teenagers with dollar signs in their eyes that actually, no, thinking strictly about yourself and your own game right now is bad for you and we need you to not think that way but you’re still gonna be the no 1 pick. maybe they will, i kinda have my doubts
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:52 (five months ago) link
i feel like it was a lot easier to run that playbook on a generation who grew up watching dirk than it will be on a generation who grows up watching luka

I often wonder if the ubiquity of soccer in euro players lives benefits their skill set. Particularly the creativity that is rewarded in soccer vs the physicality of football

a bunch of the balkan guys played water polo too guess it popular there not sure how that applies to the nba game its gotta be great for endurance at the very least i know people say those jokic kinda hook passes where he starts with the ball high look like water polo passes
― lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 16:41 (five months ago) link
jokic def holds the ball in the post w/ one arm stretched out away from the defender scanning the field of play and then whips the ball around exactly like a water polo player
