joke franchise

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 May 2024 18:37 (one month ago) link

listened to a pod two guys who were college players speculating about why foreign players are dominating the nba at the mvp candidate level and they both agreed that theres too much emphasis on skill development kinda for its own sake isolated from the larger game your drew hanlen type situations, idk about that i think it might just be a flukey thing where you happen to have four really good foreign born players, shai from canada doesnt count, and in the european system they do tons of skill development tho its with their teams so maybe thats different, but embiid came up through the us prep-college system, giannis played on a small time euro team, luka played at the heart of the euro system in madrid, jokic stayed in serbia but still high level

kind burying the lead here the thing the mentioned thats pretty obvious but interesting is all those guy are huge and strong, american guys are too skinny lol, too much body fat measuring maybe its hard to be huge and lean

euro convo starts at 18:40

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 13:57 (one month ago) link

maybe theres a distinction between skill development like working with a trainer on you side step three and working with your team doing drills to help you make in game reads, that makes sense

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:00 (one month ago) link

can see a difference in how euro bigs develop all around games with on ball skills, shooting, etc while american guards still dominate as superior shooters

think also if you come up in high level european system which really only two out of the four guys theyre talking about did, youre just in a high level system, its like instead of playing for a prep school you were part of an nba org theyre better at doing basketball things eg they employ scientists, nba kinda tried to do that with the ignite but i dont think they did a very good job, if teams are developing their own guys seems like theres better motivation to get it right, rather than just something thrown together by the league

guess we can throw wemby into the convo too but also if you want to talk about a guy whos just a freak

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:08 (one month ago) link

the only thing thats really definitively standing out here is those four guys are big and beefy, time for america to start eating stew again

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:09 (one month ago) link

wonder if theyll do an nba youth system eventually now that youve got things like overtime elite where guys are getting paid whats the difference really

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:14 (one month ago) link

giannis actually not beefy tbf

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:17 (one month ago) link

loyal american jayson tatum is not beefy but is absurdly swole in a way that really only comes through when you see him in person

the american high school and college systems have incentive systems where player development is more of a bonus than the goal

this is only tangentially related but there has been a similar backlash against quarterback overdevelopment in football. there was a time period where a lot of the top QB prospects were celebrated for having been taking private QB lessons since their early teens but when they ended up getting to major college football or the NFL they were too robotic, didn’t have functional athleticism, etc. christian hackenberg, josh rosen types. as guys like that flamed out and someone like mahomes showed up, you started to hear over QB coaching brought up as a negative, and teams started to look for more creative athletic gunslinger types.

if you follow college football recruiting nowadays, playing multiple sports, having a certain rawness is considered a plus for a highly rated QB. playing baseball in particular intrigues bcuz you have to throw from different arm slots, you’re never taught to be this 5 step drop back then throw this perfect motion type QB. but even just playing basketball and getting out there and being an athlete is now viewed as better for development than spending all that time doing QB drills over and over in a non competitive setting

ofc the negative downside of this is the zach wilson types who can’t do anything in the pocket and flame out. but the idea of extreme skill specialization — drew hanlen shit — has fallen out of favor w/ QBs

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:45 (one month ago) link

i think in the long term — like talking the next 10, 20, 30 years — the european system, if the argument is based on the idea that developing for the team is better for the individual in the long run than developing just for the individual, will have to constantly withstand, essentially, the allure of selfishness. which is to say that as the pipeline to NBA mega stardom becomes even more clear and more direct for european players, will european basketball writ large forever be able to convince teenagers with dollar signs in their eyes that actually, no, thinking strictly about yourself and your own game right now is bad for you and we need you to not think that way but you’re still gonna be the no 1 pick. maybe they will, i kinda have my doubts

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:52 (one month ago) link

i feel like it was a lot easier to run that playbook on a generation who grew up watching dirk than it will be on a generation who grows up watching luka

thats interesting i like it live life you know get out there and mix it up play some basketball why not

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 14:56 (one month ago) link

I often wonder if the ubiquity of soccer in euro players lives benefits their skill set. Particularly the creativity that is rewarded in soccer vs the physicality of football

Heez, Saturday, 25 May 2024 16:28 (one month ago) link

its got to, my dad tells this story of traveling in europe when he was young and getting in a pickup basketball game with some locals and they ended up scolding him for shooting too much lol

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 16:38 (one month ago) link

a bunch of the balkan guys played water polo too guess it popular there not sure how that applies to the nba game its gotta be great for endurance at the very least i know people say those jokic kinda hook passes where he starts with the ball high look like water polo passes

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 16:41 (one month ago) link

jokic def holds the ball in the post w/ one arm stretched out away from the defender scanning the field of play and then whips the ball around exactly like a water polo player

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 25 May 2024 16:44 (one month ago) link

We used to play water polo as well. In the shallow end. It’s a cool sport

Heez, Saturday, 25 May 2024 17:09 (one month ago) link

treading water while playing a contact sport that requires you to hold a ball over your head sounds like the most taxing thing ever, the water polo workout should be the next fitness craze

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 May 2024 17:13 (one month ago) link

i think if you grow up in miami you’re just in the pool so much that at some point you end up playing water polo. very insane sport.

The local newspaper reports who the Blazers are inviting for pre-draft workouts. I find it interesting that the Blazers have both Ayton & Time Lord under contract along with Duop Reath, the 27-year-old rookie center who played big - and credible - minutes for them all last season, but they've invited a surprising number of centers to work out for them.

Not many (any?) teams would be interested in taking on Ayton's contract, but it feels like Williams could be moving on soon. Reath should stay. He's too valuable as a young bench guy with lots of in-game experience on a very cheap contract.

REPORT: JJ Redick is already calling around the league looking for assistants for his staff. Expect an announcement by the Lakers AFTER the nba finals which Redick is announcing on ABC, via @TheSteinLine pic.twitter.com/IKAUoypxmT

— 𝐉𝐚𝐤𝐞 (@SixthManJake) May 29, 2024

"I will be very surprised if their next Head Coach is anybody but JJ Redick. Everything that I'm hearing is JJ Redick. From what I know he's doing some background, calling some assistant coaching candidates who might be able to join his staff."

The Lakers hiring JJ Redick feels pretty imminent. It's more a matter of "when" vs. "if" at this point. pic.twitter.com/qUZYnR0YYz

I don't follow the Cavs that well so maybe there was other stuff going on, but it's still a bummer that JB Bickerstaff got fired, he's universally loved here in MN from his college and Wolves assistant coach days, supposed to be a great guy and from afar seemed like he was doing a good job.

like what if the brackets were different and he lost to the Celtics when the Pacers did? Would that have been considered a good job then?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:38 (four weeks ago) link

i guess its just that mitchell doesnt love him theyre gonna try to bring in someone he does like so they can resign him

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:40 (four weeks ago) link

likely they trade garland and allen too, which tbf makes a lot of sense

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:41 (four weeks ago) link

One of the reasons they were in the position they were was because they tanked their last game for positioning in a pathetic fashion.

Not sure whose call that was but some of the players seemed embarrassed about it.

Also not sure who fed all that whining to Shams in the Athletic postmortem article but that shit was ready to print as soon as they were eliminated.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:41 (four weeks ago) link

Gilbert is just one of those 'loose cannon' owners who wants to feel in charge.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:42 (four weeks ago) link

you can tell whos gonna be fire based on if theres a shams hit piece, vogel same thing

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:43 (four weeks ago) link

one of the podcasters pointed out that in their post series interview all the cavs described the season as difficult even tho it was pretty successful none of them were like we made the second round something to build on etc so it seems like it wasnt the most harmonious team

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:47 (four weeks ago) link

but sounds like theyre going to resign mitchell which didnt seem likely for most of the year get a new coach and maybe do some trades thatll balance their roster out, could work idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:50 (four weeks ago) link

i’m pretty sure there were times during the season where the players called him out in the postgame press for his coaching decisions

idk i’m not too much into “deserve” with coaches. most of them are interchangeable. the cavs could easily find a better coach. sometimes everyone agrees the guy is a good coach but also that they want a new boss

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:54 (four weeks ago) link

yeah most coaches wear out the welcomes pretty fast

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:55 (four weeks ago) link

the thing about building around mitchell and mobley is mobley isnt a very good scorer so where do you get more scoring from, idk if garland and allen are going to get you enough in trades, if you want to be good you need a #2 quality scorer, its kind messed up cause if he gets traded to the right team garland could start playing like that guy immediately but hes just not a good fit with mitchell

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 May 2024 18:56 (four weeks ago) link

they need a big wing with a dynamic offensive game haha get in line, maybe brandon ingram tho
