CBA complexity feeds the NBA ecosystem. Tasty content

the CBA is like the most complicated board game ever invented, where it takes you months to learn the rules before you can get down to playing it

ESPN Sources: Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has agreed on a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie contract extension – a deal that could become worth as much as $269 million. pic.twitter.com/uWrTFV6hrm— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 5, 2024

i kiiiiinda get it if u think franz is an all-star at some point in the length of that contract and the fact that with cap numbers going up it wont be THAT much of a share of your cap space by the end and it's orlando so you're not likely going to be able to attract big free agents i the future anyway BUUUUUUT sheesh

i can see why they like him he a huge lead ball handler, but is he actually that good, its unclear, plus he forgot how to shoot threes last year when you really wouldve like to see him improve from there
― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 July 2024 00:29 (three months ago) link
his stats last year were better than i thought except for the three point shooting (57% on twos!) but this one just doesn't feel right

The San Antonio Spurs are trading guard Devonte Graham and a second-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets, sources tell ESPN. The Hornets will waive Graham, allowing him to become a free agent. pic.twitter.com/khvOdlyrDy— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 6, 2024

not sure why sacramento wants demar considering sabonis and fox are notoriously not huge floor-spreaders, but hey, its not my money

The Charlotte Hornets are waiving Davis Bertans, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Bertans, an eight-year NBA veteran, shot 38 percent from 3-point land last season. He had a partial guarantee on his Hornets deal.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 6, 2024
got a huge payday after one great season in washington and then became cap filler trade fodder, health got away from him. hope he lands someplace on a vet min.
― polyamerie "it's more than this 1 thing" (m bison), Saturday, 6 July 2024 17:54 (three months ago) link
signing pure shooters to big deals is fraught its so hard to shoot really good from three every year on high volume when you dont have any off the bounce counters teams can just play up on you and you end up taking all really difficult movement shots youre super vulnerable to variance etc like look at duncan robinson hes at 44% one year then down to 37 a couple years later did he get worse at shooting no its just a tough way to make a living
― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 July 2024 18:21 (three months ago) link
and to your point he was essentially dropped out of the rotation for an entire season until he remade his game to include far more ability to score on his own at the rim, break down the defense and pass the ball etc

def nice work work by him, i think hes still vulnerable but not as much, could be some bad playoff matchups for him where the original vision is more we get this guy and just let him bomb away but its never that simple, then by the time that you get a guy who can totally hold up well that guys a star
― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 July 2024 19:10 (three months ago) link
his skillset is an inherently flawed one and over the span of 3 seasons teams were able to eventually get him to the point where the flaws were being really highlighted at the expense of the good stuff. the heat’s response was to bench him, and then his response was to add enough back into his game to get back into the starting line up. these days the margins when your skillset is overwhelmingly dominated by one attribute be it athleticism, shooting, passing, rebounding, post scoring etc are just really thin
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 6 July 2024 19:30 (three months ago) link
and if you zoom out on duncan’s whole life story from D3 to michigan to g league to rotation player to starting line up to huge contract to benchwarmer to rotation player to starting line up … i think he posses some ability to continually refine/improve his game that exceeds that of even a lot of other nba players. his arc as a player is not normal
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 6 July 2024 19:34 (three months ago) link
wonder if with the transfer protocol well see more guys go from obscure schools to big schools to the league now, like the guy the celtics took with the 30th pick this year baylor scheierman started at south dakota state who have produced 3 nba players ever then transferred to creighton and got drafted in the first round
― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 July 2024 19:41 (three months ago) link
the guy from washington state who got drafted had the same story
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 6 July 2024 19:44 (three months ago) link
sonoma state to washington state to the leaguean OG version of this is jimmy butler going from some random junior college in texas to marquette to the league

idk what the deal is maybe it was always ok to transfer from d2 or jr college to d1 but from d1 to d1 you used to have to sit out a year which obvs a lot of guys didnt want to do

that’s a great signing for them i’m shocked he couldn’t get more (the heat immediately leaked that he turned down 4/48 from them before FA [which was a bit rude])

robinson actually did sit out a year before playing at michigan!
also it’s a world of difference between d3 and a solid d1 mid-major like south dakota st.

pretty happy with saric, who from what I’d been hearing the past week or so had been booth’s target from day 1. now leaves the nuggets in an interesting situation where they have a glut of bigs (especially if they sign vlatko cancar as they’re expected to), much different identity from the past couple of years where they were really thin there
