My name is Matt. I like the Portland Trail Blazers (I was a ballboy for one game) and the Milwaukee Bucks. I truly believe that the Wisconsin Badgers are a Sweet 16 lock every year. I was a poor shooter but a really good defender down low and an excellent passer for a big man.

Hey I'm Aaron. I am a diehard Pistons fan, having moved to Detroit after the 89-90 championship season. Which means I was there through the Terry Mills in teal years. Did you know that some guy named George Irvine coached the Pistons for a season. Crazy! Anyway, I suck at playing basketball which is why I like watching it. My fav college team is whoever beats Duke.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

hi I am a Pacers fan although I don't know how I'm going to deal with Reggie being gone this year. I can whup my husband's ass at pop-a-shot and horse but this might say more about him than me. I didn't get to pay any attention to basketball last year because I was working on the presidential election and then some other elections right after that. And now I'm having a kid at the beginning of december so maybe I will get to watch a lot of basketball while confined to the couch or maybe I will not get to watch any.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

hi i'm a rockets fan -- it was hakeem that taught me the beauty of the baseline fadeaway and kenny the jet smith who proved that it's possible to be a dork AND dunk (i have half of that equation). i played 8th grade and jv basketball but was never anything better than mediocre, even though i can hit my free throws and dribble not terribly. and though in football i love defense more than anything, i like my hoops open like allen iverson's collared shirt.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 October 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

i like the suns, because i'm from vancouver and our basketball team was statistically the worst team in the history of north american pro sports. so at least now we have the mvp to root for.

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 20 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I grew up in New York and somehow stumbled into being a Knicks fan (oh so grudgingly!); I'm hopeful Eddy Curry manages to stay healthy enough to play, because it seems like the first intelligent trade they've made in about ten years.

My real game is college ball - I'm a huge Syracuse fan, and like Matt I send them unreasonably far in my NCAA bracket every year. Not coincidentally, 2003 is the only year I've ever won an office pool.

I played through eighth grade, making up for my lack of size with erratic three-point shooting and my naive willingness to throw bows against kids much bigger than me; if I wasn't the Ron Artest of a bunch of mid-90's Liverpool Optimist Club rec league teams, I was at least the Anthony Mason.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Thursday, 20 October 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm the only Warriors fan here, and only when they don't suck, which means that I've followed them only for only 1 year in the past 10.

I played in jr. high on the "C" (i.e. short kids) team; my "natural" position was the point, though I didn't really have a left hand or handles. I haven't played in so long that I can no longer dribble and I'm having trouble finding my shot again.

Chris Mullin is my favorite all-time player.

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 20 October 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this board got up and running in a hurry!

I suppose I am a Raptors fan, but the franchise wasn't around when I was growing up, so I used to root for whoever the Bulls opponents were. One of my closest friends was a huge Barkley fan, so I became one too. The Suns' loss to the Bulls in 1993 really ripped my heart out. It so happened that I already had plans to get blitzed with some friends the night of Game 6, and the disappointing result of that game was an excuse to drink more. I think that was the most I drank in one night while I was in high school. My mom was none too happy when I came home the next morning and went to bed instead of going to work.

Anyway, hi.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 20 October 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm a hawks fan, once went fishing with tree rollins (he lived down the street from my grandparents), wrote a letter to the atlanta hawks when he was shuffled aside to make way for moses DEMANDING they retire his number (and congratulating them on 'sealing' a championship), dominique wilkins was my all time favorite athlete until michael vick, crazy obsessive fandom dimming to fandom post-fratello dimming to some comparable to my braves fandom post-nique dimming to 'jesus christ wtf is going on' post-steve smith. also fan of: miami heat, got a starter jacket circa rothstein era still hanging in my parents hallway closet. played: youth leagues til high school - POWER forward, inpenetrable defense, tough rebounding, loved PACKING people, glory days. i'm strongly anti-dress code.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

also very happy about this board as every year circa tourney thru playoffs my bball fandom will surge slightly and i'll think it's back like it was in 8th grade and then it fades of course. will probably lurk here more than anything else. also glad that this board can potentially be phase two of ilx regressing me completely back to 6th grade. phase one: I Love Comics. phase three: I Love Fingering (coming march 06).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

hi, i'm jess. i'm a sixers fan. i watched faithfully every year from junior high through 2001, when i stopped. i would like to start again. no, i never played in high school.

this is sicilian medieval thuggery (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Grew up a Hornets fan in NC, though I lived a good 3 hours away from Charlotte so I never felt any real live-or-die allegiance to 'em (I did rock a ridiculously poofy Starter jacket for the Hornets in middle school). George Shinn's legendary douchitude is probably the main reason I eventually soured on the team.

Now that I'm in Athens I've tried to rally around another dixieland disgrace, the Hawks, probably doubling Turner South's ratings when I started tuning in to their games last year (I even attended one, my first NBA contest, and was very impressed with the Phillips Arena if not the fans that (sorta) filled it).

Ultimately, I doubt I'll ever feel about any NBA team the same way I feel about my Tar Heels, though now that the Hawks have got Marvin Williams who knows?

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I'm TV's Craig Sager. Born in CT, I was a Celtics fan, I guess, tho I was more a Reggie Lewis fan than anything - I loved his fall-away bankshots. I guess I was also a UConn fan - my experience re: Tate George's THE SHOT involved hearing about the play on a local Top 40 station while dejectedly doing homework. I then saw the following game against Duke while I was rehearsing a stupid one-act play I wrote w/ a girl I was hopelessly crushing on.

I'm a bit standoffish nowadays, tho, re: pro & college alliegances - I tend to root against UConn when I w/ pro-Huskie fans, because I'm an asshole. I did pick Syracuse when Carmelo took them all the way, though, which is something that will probably never happen again. Me winning a tourney pool, that is.

My game, BTW, is all about using my ass to indimidate my opponent, hitting folks with my knees as they drive by, and taking ill-advised jump shots.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm down with the Pistons-MSU axis in pro and college ball. When I was a kid I got to hang around the back-to-back Bad Boys after a game and it was probably the greatest thing to happen to me, sports-wise, in my youth.

Vinne Johnson was the coolest, and I think because he wasn't so tall and intimidating I liked him most. I was also nuts for Joe Dumars, who I would later get to know a few other ways (both as fans, rooting for the private school where my girlfriend and his kid went to school; both as professionals, me covering his team's 04 Eastern Conf. championship) and I can say he's one of the warmest, most personable executives I've ever met.

I was a freshman at Mich State when they won in '99, and our out-of-control dorm floor's Resident Advisor was a Flint guy who, the two times we saw him that semester, brought a few of the Flintstones through to say hi. I'm not sure anything legal compares to the collective ecstacy of a NCAA championship on a college campus.

Hey ... Mavs fan here. Let's get this party started and deal with the bullshit first. NBA Dress Code: necessary?

Nash2Dirk, Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Personally I don't think a league-wide dress code is necessary, or even beneficial for the reasons they give. First of all, I don't agree specifically with Stephen Jackson, etc. who believe it's an issue of racism, but I do agree with the principle. Clothing is an expression of oneself - and for many people that's an expression of culture as well (traditional, religious, community, music). It does sound a lot like the stupid hair wars of the 60s due to rock and roll.

Stern just wants to appeal to the big bucks in corporations who, like any older generation, are somewhat disgusted by the younger generation's way of speaking, dressing, acting, and behaving. The players have a uniform already - their basketball jersies. I have a lot more to say on the subject but I want to hear from other people.

Nash2Dirk, Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe start a new thread about it and keep this thread as the "introductions" thread?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 20 October 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I need to get into "Hot Plate" shape first.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

rob here, grew up a celtics fan but now of dubious allegiance. i'm psyched to see the celt's youngsters take over because i'm tired of having my heart broken by the pierce/walker/blount axis. of course i still appreciate those boys for pulling the green out of the serious 90's funk, but the future is AL JEFFERSON. hopefully!

i follow the lakers out of some morbid curiosity and the remnants of the shaq association (said morbid curiosity also fuels my desultory interest in the clippers) but since i have a like/hate relationship with kobe at best i tend to play Oatu the Watcher a bit and am a general fan of the league. loved phoenix last year, wanted to see the pistons win it (but horry's megadunk was classik) and i hope for kg's mental state he either gets himself traded or mchale blows up the team yet again.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

oh and i'm sort of a tweener, i should be forward down on the blocks but i have no post-up moves, so i wind up being a spot-up shooter. i'd have made a decent point guard if i actually had some handles or an off hand.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey there. Just discovered this message board, and I'll probably not do much participating in here, but it's good that there's a basketball MB in this forum community now. My name is Dee (perhaps a given to some of you) and I'm a longtime Spurs fan. Die hard too; even while they've been sucking royally throughout the current preseason, I still love them and will always support them. I was dismayed to see the Spurs do so much personnel shaking-up in the preseason and I don't think it can be a good thing, even if they did snap up some pretty big names (esp Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel); I feel like maybe the Spurs sealed their fate as a cinch to NOT repeat their success in the race to the rings, but if I have to eat my words on that, I will more than happily do that. (Though I don't think I will. The Spurs do their best when they can win WITHOUT Duncan, obv, and they've not been doing that recently.) But whatever happens, the Spurs will always be my team, and I can't imagine supporting another NBA team.

(As for NCAA action, I somewhat pathetically support Texas. "Hook 'em Horns! What team did they most recently play again?")

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 23 October 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I've been thinking about getting Warriors season ticks but sadly I don't know anyone who likes basketball. I know they're a trendy pick to make the playoffs, but they were so much fun to watch at the end of last season.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 24 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Spurs are my. My first live game was seeing them play against the Indiana Pacers in the old Hemisfair Arena. I think we got free tickets because my dad sang the national anthem that game. We lost.

I spent a year in fan exile during the 1996-7 season when D Rob and Sean Elliot decided to not be healthy. At least I got to see Dominique Wilkins pad his career points stats. I rooted for the Bulls because seeing teams win a lot is fun and Jordan was everyone's favorite player.

Then Tim Duncan was drafted and I was back on the wagon. Since then I have: advocated the trade of Rasho Nesterovic six times; uttered "Fucking Lakers" at least 200 times; not seen a game live since we played in the Alamadome. My favorite Spurs game was when I was in the 4th row to see Mario Elie hit a game-winning shot against the Rockets in a come from behind game.

Also, Dee, you are absolutely losing it if you don't think Finley and Van Exel make us a lock for an 80-2 record. Preseason means absolutely dick!

Waitasec, poly: you're in the Yay?

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

See, I continued being a Spurs fan throughout the '96 - '97 season, which made the 1999 NBA Championship insanely sweet to me, because I knew how far the team had gone since those days. Actually, I seem to remember 1995 being particularly harsh for the Spurs organization for some reason. Still, I continued to support the Spurs. Even when there were times I was tempted to support the Sonics instead.

Also, Dee, you are absolutely losing it if you don't think Finley and Van Exel make us a lock for an 80-2 record. Preseason means absolutely dick!

I would like to believe that Finley and Van Exel will = FEAR THE SPURS time, but I'm not sure they'll be able to do for the team what Duncan has done, i.e. take over a leadership position with the team. IF they can and will do that, the team will be most fearsome indeed, because hey, the more players the opposition will have to worry about will obv mean a weakened defense vs. the Spurs and better chances for the Spurs to control the game. But I think I'm going to have to adopt a wait and see attitude here.

Actually, maybe I should just wait for the regular season to really begin and for the team to play their first 20 games or so before being able to determine if you're right. Which I do hope you are, but again.

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

nyc native. grew up a knicks fan, and still love the 90s classic teams. i lived and died -- mostly died, it seems now -- with every john starks performance. but it was fun.

then the knicks started to become no fun. not even in a thuggish sort of way. and the nets, somehow, impossibly, became the best team in the area to watch. and now they're moving to my ancestral homeland of brooklyn. i may have defected permanently. and i can live with that.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Friday, 28 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Last year I decided I should root for SOMEONE. I've never had a favorite NBA team (except for a short bandwagon stint with the Pistons back in their heyday), so last year I decided to make the Bobcats my own. I like how they're building this team, not wasting money on overrated mid-tier free agents, waiting to get a genuine impact player and loading up on talented, cheap, young guys.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I grew up in Indiana, so I have heard about basketball my whole life. I used to live and die Indiana Hoosier's basketball, but that has not been the same for quite some time now. Grew up watching the Pacers be the laughing stock of the league and have been heartened that they have been one of the better run teams beginning with the arrival of Reggie Miller. My first pro game was seeing the 76ers play in Indy with Dr.J and it was as amazing as you would think.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

My name is Jeff. The first NBA basketball game I attended in person was the Showtime Lakers vs. the Warriors in the conference semifinals of the 1987 playoffs. After the Chris Webber saga during his rookie year, I stopped paying attention to basketball until I moved to the greater Sacramento area several years later, where I ran across Chris Webber again and forgave him. I've become mildly obsessive about the Kings ever since, which has become something I can only admit in Sacramento without people laughing or cringing.

I can't get myself interested in college basketball. I couldn't tell you why.

I was on the worst CYO basketball team of all time when I was in fourth grade. We went 0-10 and I was our leading scorer, averaging a massive 3.5 points per game. My skills have only gotten worse.

Let's ball!
