Thunder have a weirdly lopsided roster at the moment - Kenrich Williams, four centres and ten guards.

and mccain does fit a long term need

so they traded a first round pick for a guy who has upside but is inconsistent now so that he can fill some minutes in the single digit number of games that shai will miss and then be benched and later traded

i think they traded for a player who has proven to be effective when he can play consistent minutes and have the ball in his hands, with the understanding that he probably won’t play that much for them in the playoffs and he could be a part of their team for the next few years or he could be dealt. i just don’t know how you look at their roster and feel confident that he’s some sort of long term price for them. yes they need to trade some guys but he could just as easily be one of those guys as any of the other guys

also they traded a pick that is gonna be in the 20s and some junky seconds, it was a pretty low expenditure of assets for OKC

in that case a different player would have been better

my point is really just that if you were to group the thunder players into buckets of “not being traded” and “could be traded” i would put mccain in the latter. and i *personally* look at their roster and question whether there’s enough playing time available for him when they have most of their guys healthy and whether he’ll be flipped (potentially for value!) to a team that has a permanent hole at guard and not a temporary one caused by injury to the team’s two best players

when a team trades for a young player who fits a need it makes sense that theyd be thinking about keeping him but who knows maybe theyll just keep all their guards who cant shoot and/or dribble instead, and he doesnt make much money when the thunder are about to have a very expensive roster

lakers to me have this feel of inherited old money using the tactics that worked for their old man, but the market has adapted and now they dont have the chops to adjust. like they got the superstars, that used to be enough back then! back in the day, the gm just had to be a good hoops head who understood relationships with the stars, now they have to know math or at least feel comfortable deferring to ppl who do. the old ways sometimes work because it always seems to work for them (lakers exceptionalism), sometimes lebron just wants to come to la todo space jam and put his kids in elite prep schools! sometimes you know a guy in dallas who's trying to shake things up. running a team is easy when youve got prestige, not as easy when everyone else around you got smarter.

anyway i had shingles in my 20s. cleared up pretty quick with meds though, wasn’t a big deal

xp happens from time to time but usually in people who are immune compromised. I recall it happened to the tennis player james blake 20 years ago or so too

have to give the lakers a few more years of genuinely building around luka, as opposed to suddenly welding him to a roster that was at the end of the line, before i’m buying anything about their demise. but i think it’s fair to say that the lack of free agency movement especially amongst the top players in the league definitely hurts them

im not counting out the lakers as a good team as long as they have luka, theyll be competitive. but yeah, free agency has been their bread and butter, the mystique, the logo, etc. post-kobe they tried building through the draft and then got bron and said fuck it, we're getting AD. they probably have one big trade (reaves) to get a running mate next to luka and then have to nail a bunch of moves on the margin.

i'm very much onboard with the idea that luka fell into their lap and they deserve(d) some space to figure things out, on the other hand they've had a year and done absolutely nothing with it.
