144.2 is unfathomable. and that sample size isn’t that small

it's been interesting, watching Rudy Gobert 100x more than I ever would have in a lifetime. He's a singularly weird and great and terrible and frustrating player. And almost everything he really does well are the types of things that are not suited to be appreciated in the social media highlights era, and everything he's terrible at sticks out like a sore thumb.

like a combination of a defensive savant and a guy that seems like he's seeing a basketball for the first time in his life.

i think ive said this before but best seats i ever had at a game was like 8th row and suns were playing jazz. seeing gobert at like eye level was so shocking. on tv he looks like a normal skinny tall nba player but he would barely be bending over and his hands we're like at his shins, shoulders way more broad than it seems, then he'd put his arms out wide and i have no idea how anyone completes a pass or gets a shot off in his vicinity. ive seen shaq with pretty good seats, and it was even more alien than that somehow. but i do remember how clunky he was on offense, just no feel or touch. i still think the most unlikely shot in nba history is that game 7 shot clock running down fadeaway to help put the nuggets away a couple years back.

zach lowe, nate duncan et al have been noting that it looks like he’s slowing down in terms of being able to move his feet and contest shots at the rim

he also had that one bizarre outburst against the Lakers in the playoffs last year where he scored 27 points and looked incredible on offense for one day

feel like he's getting acclimated to what they need him to do. in a shooting slump too, cant imagine it will hold much longer

cam left the game in the first quarter last night with some shoulder issue. not sure if that's been a thing that's been bothering him the whole time or not. he's missed a bunch of open looks and it doesn't really make sense

even tho he was a role player for the suns i feel like there has to be some adjustment involved when moving from "you're one of the top scorers on a horrible team and you can do whatever you want out there and literally nobody cares" to coming into a system like denver's w/ an established hierarchy and shots for role players coming in distinct ways, having actual responsibility, having to play serious basketball etc

Luka balling out to start the year

his shooting splits are insane right now too basically 50/43/90 vs career 47/35/76

i think it was the hoop collective crew who noted that in this game (vs TOR) he also took 3 charges, and it was the only documented instance of a player with 5 steals and 3 drawn charges, ever! so he certainly seems to be leaving it all out on the floor at a new level, so if that's the main difference, scary stuff...

his jumper just looks really pure right now, not sure what else to say, he's always been a good shooter and had good form ofc but idk everything is just coming off his hand looking perfect. maybe it's just overall being healthier, maybe he's getting a little more lift on his shot having lost some weight

there was a play vs the heat the other night where he shot a 3 and missed it, lakers got the rebound in a scramble situation and kicked it back out to luka who was wide open for three and i would have bet all the money i have on the shot going in, and you could tell the second it left his hand that he knew it wasn't hitting rim, and it didn't

also mentally doesnt have to worry about bron and is further removed from his breakup which im sure messed with him last year.

BUT hes had streaks like this before, and he usually always runs out of steam somewhere in the season (and in 3rd/4th quarters like he did against the dubs).
