do u guys?

i get pickup games a few times a week at the courts near my house when the weather is good

<3 <3 <3 one of my favorite activities

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't played a real game in 15 or so years.

Alex in SF, Friday, 25 April 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

Used to love playing when I was in high school though.

Alex in SF, Friday, 25 April 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

aww

ive played a few times at those courts in the panhandle (this is what they call that little strip extending out from golden gate park right) when visiting my sister

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that used to be a good pickup game spot (also down at Dolores Park too IIRC.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

been a couple years. we've been trying to organize a game for about a month now and everyone has endless excuses - bad back, got jazz tix, hangnail, moon is waning, feeling old at 30, etc

6335, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

dude just go down to where people play and get next - i usually go w/at least one friend - but theres no need to bring a complete game w/you - that is the beauty

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

havent played since sr year in hs, havent put any effort into it since jr year

this used to be my friends favorite pastime but theyve all gotten too fat & lazy, same as me

deeznuts, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

While jhoshea is OTM that it's to get in pick-up games, it's a little harder to do if you haven't played in ages and your instincts and shot are totally pathetic (esp. pickup basketball can get a little intimidating IMO.) Still pick up a ball and practice your shot and you'll get it back eventually.

Alex in SF, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

just play in shitty games til u get yr confidence back is all

or if yr feeling brave just get pwnd for a little while

jhøshea, Friday, 25 April 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

i played a couple weeks ago after a 3 month+ layoff; i tried to stay out of games just shooting by myself but got cajoled into full on 5 on 5 sos i wouldn't look like a pussy, and surprised myself with how well i did. just played lowkey, concentrated on defense and hit a couple open jumpers. panting like a dog though, i need to start running again.

tremendoid, Saturday, 26 April 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)

i have glass ankles unfortunately, since my teens it seems like i can never play regularly for more than 2 months before catastrophe strikes. i never had hops to begin with so no biggie, my shot is still there

tremendoid, Saturday, 26 April 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm a smoker + I hairline fractured my right ankle a couple years ago and never really had it treated = I will probably never play in a pickup game again in my life. Which sucks.

Clay, Saturday, 26 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

haha i've probably fractured mine or worse half a dozen times, i don't know what it would take to actually have them looked at by a doctor, now one of my ankles clicks just about every step i take but it doesn't really hurt anymore. last week i thought about picking up some 9.99 starburys to replace my tim duncans (!), i don't learn i guess. can't bring myself to buy nikes but the non-sweatshop shits suck for the most part.

tremendoid, Saturday, 26 April 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

god, mine still hurts like hell, particularly in the winter and occasionally just fucking buckles on me and I nearly fall over. This is most awesome when crossing streets.

Clay, Saturday, 26 April 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

i play when i can, which isn't much these days. my handle has left me completely. more than one dribble with the left is an adventure.

hytop, Saturday, 26 April 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

i use the racquetball court at a gym that doubles as a b-ball half-court. i'd rather use an outdoor court but i don't know of one near me. hadn't really played in years but my shot came back pretty quick

am0n, Saturday, 26 April 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

i love playing pickup basketball #1 advantage of free gym @ college

J0rdan S., Saturday, 26 April 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

i am only okay but soooo much fun

J0rdan S., Saturday, 26 April 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

actually i just thought of one court that i could probably walk to. just need a ball pump

am0n, Saturday, 26 April 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

I'm saving my body for old age. Hard cuts to the basket are not part of the program. I like to walk too much to chance it.

Aimless, Saturday, 26 April 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

just camp out and shoot threes

hytop, Saturday, 26 April 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

I will fuck you all up. I hadn't played all that much in the last few years , but started playing more often recently with this dude from work. He works out every day and runs full court games at his gym 6X/week. I SUCK at decision-making in a 5on5 game, but made him eat his trash-talking words in 1on1. He's Mr Testosterone and takes shit way too seriously, which is pretty annoying but I still have fun.

Granny Dainger, Saturday, 26 April 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

just remembered this is like a 5 min from me but the names on the wall make it look like some "locals only" shit.

i can barely touch rim and my hands are smaller than 95% of girls I've known. So nope, can't dunk neither.

Granny Dainger, Sunday, 27 April 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

i think i can get like halfway up the net or some shit on a good day

J0rdan S., Sunday, 27 April 2008 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

i once did like a rub dunk on a crooked outdoor rim. it was not pretty. my brothers got the good genes.

grazed the rim once or twice back in high school days. how tall are u guys? i'm about 5'11 and i can probably barely touch the net now

6335, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh come on, even a 5'11" with laimbeer hops could easily touch net. (I'm 6ft, 170. Just like AI!)

Granny Dainger, Monday, 28 April 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

I rolled my ankle something fierce at a pick up game on saturday. swelling is down now but I’m still listed as day to day.

carne asada, Monday, 28 April 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

i played almost everyday from 8 to 19 but the last time i played was about 13 years ago in york beach, maine. i was abused by some 6' 7" 17 year old. my tar-coated lungs just couldn't get it done. it was embarrassing.

my heart would probably explode if i tried to play a full court game today.

chicago kevin, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

eh yr a wirey guy right - i bet you could get back in shape pretty easily - it the extra weight thatll really hold you back

jhøshea, Monday, 28 April 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

wiry, skeletal, whatever. mid 30s, smoking for over half my life now, not sure i could actually get back in shape. i'll bet i could still nail the open j though.

carne asada, Monday, 28 April 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

annoying playground ball trend, pt 1: you score 15 or so quick points in 21 or 32, and then mofos start playing "defense" on you ie hacking like mad
annoying playground ball trend, pt 2: 3 other dudes playing, you come in, and no one wants to play 2 on 2, just 1 on 1 b.s.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

omg ive been so on fire the last couple days - yesterday i mustve shot like 15/22 over the course of three games of 4 on 4 to 16 - hitting crazy threes off the dribble off balance floaters layups high of the glass everything - against good players too!

jhøshea, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

i'm going to try and get back out there this weekend. hope the ankle holds up.

carne asada, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

do you have any sort of brace? i bought one a couple years ago, but I think it's too small cause there's more pain with wearing it than without.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

yah prob too small - do you do any sort of strengthening exercises? def worthwhile. weird muscular over compensation/weakening as the result of a single injury is often what leads to the chronic variety.

jhøshea, Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

i don't have a brace. i was just gonna go with a tape wrap and see how it feels.

carne asada, Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

it doesnt count if u only play against white ppl btw

cankles, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

well duh

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

LOL! i play against a lot of filipinos. i dominate the boards but the dudes kill me with their quicks. i pretty much suck. it all about the cardio workout for me anyways.

carne asada, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

my weekly monday night game now features a dude who played 3 years in the NFL and another who was an all-american cornerback for Maryland but blew his knee out on pro day. they are both prob 10 years younger than me. it's a blast

Heez, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:08 (two years ago)

When I hear Jones say this phrase, I imagine that I'm playing basketball on a Sunday morning on the good courts at Roosevelt Park in Sacramento. It is not yet 9 a.m., but the June sun has already begun to bake the asphalt, trees, and detritus, an ominous sensation you smell more than feel. I have already played two games to 15 and am sapped to exhaustion when a new player joins the run, someone whose presence instantly heightens the game's tension. On every possession, they talk to themselves and their opponents. They hit beautiful swishes with an ugly jumper, and they staunchly refuse to call a foul even when they're thumped. They are making a really stupid ball fake work. They score the last bucket. Nobody sees them arrive; nobody sees them leave. They are wearing black Air Force 1s.

mookieproof, Friday, 7 April 2023 03:12 (two years ago)

i was taking my child to the playground today and we have to walk by some basketball courts to get there. there was a one-on-one game happening between a couple of teens, one very lithe and muscular but small and one who was just enormous, not in shape at all but with an offensive lineman's body. i watched the bigger kid mercilessly back down the smaller kid and make an ugly layup adjacent to the rim, and a third kid who was watching yelled at the smaller kid about the quality of his defense. the smaller kid looked at the spectator with complete disgust and anger and said "he's 6'5", what do you want me to do?"

eleven months pass...

played tonight for the first time in a couple of months — have really only been playing a few times a year since the pandemic, which is sad to think about. I play a good amount of reasonably high level pickleball, which is a solid workout, and I walk a lot, but it’s nothing like full court pickup. you get reminded pretty quickly that it’s a different beast when you’re out of playing shape. and pushing 35 and playing with college kids

anyway, I’m on the faculty at BU, so I decided to check out the rec center. (I’m trying to take better advantage of these faculty perks, like free museum passes etc, before I move to LA this summer.) got into a game pretty quickly, and overall think I played fine especially considering how rusty I am. played 2 games to 15, had 4-5 buckets each game including a couple of really tough finishes, and some nice dimes. but man was I gassed about halfway through that first game, and I had some sloppy turnovers in traffic just because I didn’t have the burst my brain thought I had. or maybe I’ll never get that burst back because I’m old now, idk.

anyway, legitimately nothing like pickup culture, man, I really miss it. always say I should get back into playing regularly, but never actually follow through. maybe the better weather in LA will make it easier

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 5 April 2024 01:11 (one year ago)

the only thing i ever found that kept me in basketball shape at all was olympic lifting which makes sense cause theyre both about explosive actions, not that i was trying to stay in ball shape just i had been doing a bunch of cleans and i played after a long layoff and was like what im not totally gassed, but i was still kind of gassed

I play with a 82 year old. It’s insane. He’s pretty awful, especially if the other team doesn’t have a dud to match him up against, but I’m so amazed by this man he is my hero. We have a chat going to notify everyone on court availability and the last time we had to bail he wrote, ok I guess I’ll start drinking. My heart melted.

walking down the street today there was a little kid with a huge backpack dribbling a basketball in front of me

he was pretty good! not super easy to dribble between your legs when you're like 4'6"

i was considering whether it was appropriate to compliment him when he banged one off his heel and it bounced across the street. at least he paused to look for traffic

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 October 2024 03:12 (seven months ago)

Not sure if it warrants a new thread but my 8 year old is really into balling and I’m wondering if other parents (looking at Spottie) have had any luck with teaching cool skills without bumming their kids out. Right now I’m just working on dribbling HARD with both hands. Also making him change pace when he’s dribbling. Then we play pig like 5 times in a row. Any other suggestions?

Heez, Sunday, 3 November 2024 16:46 (seven months ago)

at young ages to me its all about just keeping them interested and feeling the itch. then add things incrementally to see what clicks. if you push hard too fast and they arent the type to respond to that then nothing will work. my oldest i really tried all kinds of tactics (not just basketball, but other athletics and music stuff too) and he just would not care past a certain point. he enjoys it while hes doing it but has no interest in improving on his own time. my middle son really responded to challenges and learning new things, when he was about 6-7 we were shooting around and i started some loose drills and he was really intent on learning and mastering. id then see him on his own working on the things we worked on. or id show him player highlihgts and hed go try things out. my youngest is the same way and its really great cos they have eachother to play with now and that does more for their improvements than almost anything else. we'll be watching some hoops and after a few minutes one of them will get the urge and they'll call out the other one outside to play.

as far as drills i usually do things that involve all three of the offensive fundamentals; passing, dribbling and shooting. so ill start under the hoop, have them pass to me from around the three point line, then pass back to them and ill close out on them and have them pump fake then dribble to another spot and shot, either all the way for a layup or just the elbows or wherever.

we play lightning/knock-out a lot as a family and that gets everyone involved. can never go wrong with horse, 21, around the world. i play lefty to even the playing field a bit.

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Monday, 4 November 2024 00:18 (seven months ago)

Yeah I’m all about not burning him out, but it’s basically the only thing he’ll listen to me on so trying to keep him excited. I was always the big kid playing the 4 or 5 and never got enough ball handling practice so working a lot on that. I should probably work on the passing more but second graders don’t really do spacing

Heez, Monday, 4 November 2024 03:26 (seven months ago)

my son is 10 and got super into playing one on one with me and a neighborhood friend in the driveway last year. the best way to get him to actually care about building skills was to have them come from not me, so we watched a lot of youtube videos on teaching kids to shoot and dribble and the like, and then when we were playing i could say "remember how that video said you should try to ___" instead of me just saying it, which he'd be more likely to get agitated from. wish i could recommend specific ones but there wasn't like one guru who we fell for. when we played one-on-one he wanted me to play hard but also didn't want to get decimated every possession, so we got in the habit of very creative handicaps -- i could only play d with no arms, and then later with only my forearms, elbows pinned to my sides, lol. only other tangible advice that worked for us was keeping the hoop at 8 feet, it's easy to burn out when many of your shots are airballs, plus you're focusing everything on just getting the ball up and can't really devote any attention to form.

love your guidance spottie, and good luck Heez!

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 4 November 2024 17:36 (seven months ago)

oh def agree about the rim height and add making sure you have the right ball size to that equation as well. we're up to 10' now and the size 6 ball.

also agree about learning from other sources. at a certain age they dont want to hear it from dad any more.

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Monday, 4 November 2024 17:57 (seven months ago)

we also put a little nerf like hoop up on one of the doors in the house and they are using that constantly
