-Hey, Larry Brown started Matt Barnes at SF. Who's Matt Barnes? Exactly.
-Holy cow how about that Dwight Howard. He seriously must've put on 30 pounds of muscle. Dwight looks like he's chiseled out of marble, and he's only 19. I smell an Amare Stoudamire-like second year jump.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

But most of all...

-God I'm so happy the season has started!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

matt barnes is from ucla right?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 November 2005 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Barnes played for Sacramento last season. 2 fouls in 6 minutes. I think the Knicks looked pretty good though. Tons of turnovers but they have the talent to make the playoffs. Probably a 7 or 8 seed.

Why oh why do they have Brett Musburger doing the play-by-play tonight for the Pistons-Sixers game??? Oh Brett Musburger you are my nemesis.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

17 boards for Bogut! Bucks 2-0! Cibula spontaneously combusts! Pictures at 11!

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

Man, Nene is out for the season. Seeing as how Kenyon Martin has a bum knee and Marcus Camby is a paper cut away from getting injured, so much for the Nuggets having a break out season.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

Earl Boykins can play the 4.

I think Bill Walton got his teeth capped

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

He already had some pretty big chompers to begin with, didn't he?

Anyway, let's talk about how the Spurs will win all their games this year.

Its morph 'em to pun cute (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Who is this Maurice Williams that I have on my bench who just went 23/4/5?

Leeeeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

Mehmet Okur has awesome hair.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Thursday, 3 November 2005 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

Mehmet Okur with TWENTY SEVEN POINTS.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Last night's performance by the Spurs has made me feel more assured about what might happen with their season. I do hope they don't falter, that they don't fall into the same traps that have previously bedeviled them. I hope they don't give out defensively. The lower-scoring games have proven to be their forte, though obv I'm well aware that they were able to win at least four games in last year's postseason where the scoring was mad high. I hope people pick on Ginobili much less than I'm expecting they will. I hope Van Exel and Finley play like superstars and become just as vital to the Spurs as Duncan is. Etc., etc., etc.

And did you hear about Eva Longoria's Tony Parker tattoo? I wasn't even aware she had any, but apparently she's had two tattoos aside from this new one she's put on, in honor of the guy whom she's so close with that she lets him see a certain part of her body "on a regular basis". Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to wash my brain now.

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I can't say this enough -- I love me some Charles Barkley.

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

The Denver Nuggets should start their rebranding campaign now. Would Stern be upset if they made their logo a giant pot leaf?

Its morph 'em to pun cute (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 3 November 2005 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Matt Barnes when he played for the Kings last year. He's a hustle guy who can pull down a bunch of boards and play a little D. If he worked on his J over the Summer, he could be a great cheap find for the Knicks. I'm not quite sure how he couldn't fit into Philly's system after he got shipped there in the C-Webb trade, but I'm glad to see him get a shot elsewhere.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Devin Harris looked like a monster in the fourth tonight. Perfect from the field, 18 or 20 points.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Sunday, 6 November 2005 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Forget what I said about the Knicks looking pretty good. I think it might be January before the Larry Brown-era gets its first win.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 7 November 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Q!!!!!!!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 November 2005 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Eight out of the top ten highlights on NBA TV's recap show last night were from the Lakers/Nuggs game. Were the rest of the games on yesterday's slate that boring or is this part of some campaign to shove Kobe (MAMBA) back into the limelight?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Monday, 7 November 2005 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also, wouldn't that Mamba nickname be cooler if it were an acronym? You know, like M.A.N.T.I.S.?

Please submit your suggestions for what M.A.M.B.A. might stand for.

Paul Shirley may soon deserve his own thread. In the meantime, please check out this great chat transcript.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Dah! Insider is keeping Shirley's wisdom cloaked.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Friday, 11 November 2005 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

Why are the Pistons so much more fun to watch under Mister Flip?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't say Shirley's column amounts to wisdom. His ESPN columns haven't been very amusing, since he's just sitting on his ass waiting to hear from a foreign league or the NBDL. One entire column was spent dickriding Stellastarr*.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

in theory, the idea of a (quasi) NBA player offering an inside look at the league is great - it'd just be better if it was, say, Bonzi Wells or Brent Barry or Kwame Brown or, well, anybody besides Paul Shirley.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, sure, and it'd be even better if Jonathan Swift were still alive, blogging, and had some dope-ass post-up moves. While we're at it, I'd also like a silver pony. In the meantime, what is so wrong with Paul Shirley's writing? I think he's funny, self-deprecating, and (most importantly) ACTUALLY WRITING.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

What's wrong with it? Reliance on the same self-deprecating nonsense, generally offering little or no insight into his life or the life of a professional (but not NBA) player and an overall sub-Sports Guy tone.

Shirley's NBA.com blog was excellent, when he was actually on a team and stuff. His ESPN columns are the suck.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

plus he is ROCKIST! ha!

Josh Love (screamapillar), Friday, 11 November 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I heard Brent Barry is WAY into grime and deep house kulcha

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 11 November 2005 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

OK, you want me to be honest, I think I just still hold a grudge against him for shit-talking the Hawks last year, specifically how the announcers would say "J-SMOOVE" every time Josh Smith threw one down.

The only thing funny about Shirley really is when he's being self-deprecating about his skillz - the rest of the time he tries to be so wry that he usually comes off smug and self-pleased instead.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Oh come on, Shirley's stuff is a cut above any "Diary" I've ever read by a player. Sure, he's not really bringing anything hugely insightful to the table, but it's still much better than "We went to Phoenix and played XBox in the hotel then went and got pizza."

Any serious self-deprecation, from a professional athlete, is rare. To put down in writing something like "My career is probably over, who would want me, what am I doing here anyway" is a rare bit of honesty.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Saturday, 12 November 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

was i (backsliders) thrown out of the tru wariers fantasy leauge? i turned down a trade with the parisian nightsuits (out-for-a-month Mickael Pietrus for Vanilla Godzilla), and i may have made a frivolous counter offer, but getting thrown out for that seems a bit harsh. i apologize to anyone i offended and hope to be reinstated. thanks.

It's giving me a 'not in league' error too. Must just be a Yahoo problem.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, currently none of us are in. don't get paranoid!

(Dan: I made that offer when I thought Pietrus would be back in a week, not a month. But if you think that Przybilla will get real full-time minutes until December when Theo Ratliff gets traded to the Knicks, and when Pietrus is back in action, then you are a crazy dreamer!)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

i had a crazy dream last night--przybilla had five blocks in 33 minutes, ratliff played three minutes.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

well, ratliff is doubtful for tonight vs. washington, so that might happen!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Loltenant in the Lmaoist Rofflution (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 1 December 2005 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, I wish the Spurs would stop taking off on the second game of back-to-backs. Losing to the Hawks won't hurt in the long run, but shit that's embarrassing.

who's excited for the xmas day double-header?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

pistons-spurs will clearly be the better game, but kobe might try to spring for 80 before the half

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

then his arm will fall off

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

also pat riley! i can't look at the man and not think it's 1987 and showtime. i know he "ruined" the "league" in that stretch in new york and miami, but he just...still looks exactly the same

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

wait- is there another coach associated with two disparate styles as riley? first showtime, with really only enough defense to get by (which was quite a lot, honestly) and the focus on running and gunning; then the grind-it-out, put-the-hurt-on-em knicks and heat. hmm

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Hell yeah I can't wait for the games on Sunday.

BTW, I can't believe that Isiah not only gave Chicago an UNPROTECTED first round pick next season (hello #1) but also the right to swap picks in 2008. Holy schmoly Eddy Curry sure wasn't worth those picks.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 24 December 2005 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

It boggles my mind that many people in Chicago still regret that trade, think it was an unfortunate necessity. Sweetney doesn't quite put up the same numbers as Curry, but I like him much more...plus there't the picks! and *coughmumbleTimThomasfor14milperyear!*

Glad the fans in Detroit booed her yesterday.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 26 December 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

poor nuggets. perhaps the most predictable words in the nba: marcus camby out indefinitely. i think they really would be a good team if they weren't decimated! 'melo is finally looking good.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 29 December 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

also when did kmart go from all-star game-changing' top flight dude to kind of random 2nd banana? was that exclusively because of the eastern to western conference switch? hmm, i guess it is- when the west has duncan/garnett/nowitzki/stoudamire/etc and the east has...rasheed? bosh?

plus he was fairly overrated in jerz anyway, cf bill walton hyperbole sphere

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 29 December 2005 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 29 December 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 27 January 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

Although dumping Michael Olowokandi isn't so bad, but then getting Blount to replace him makes it bad again...

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 27 January 2006 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the Celtics know what they're doing.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure Bill Simmons will have plenty to say about it.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

oh they know what they're doing: racking up the injury-prone white guy quotient. seriously, raef lafrentz and wally sczerbiak on the same team? good lord

thank god they got rid of mark blount though. maybe olowokandi will get lost in the big dig and never show up to play.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

that said i like wally, kinda, and kendrick perkins is really starting to look like the player al jefferson was supposed to be this season.

ricky & kg is an intriguing combination. guarantee simmons points out that it doesn't violate his "one headcase per team" rule, since kg almost counts as -1 headcase.

the artest trade might really be opening the trade floodgates.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

also anyone know what latrell sprewell is doing, out of curiosity? obviously no one was stupid enough to offer him 5 mil or whatever he wanted. i wonder if he'll sign on with someone for whatever minimum after the trade deadline.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

I heard he's not in game shape so no one will sign him.

I went to the Pacers-Wolves and 76ers-Wolves games this past weekend, and Wally and KG barely seemed to be playing on the same team. KG had 17 against Indiana and 13 against the Sixers; not good. Hopefully for them Davis will feed him more. All Blount will have to do is just stand there and he'll be a better center than what they had going, so I think the Wolves did ok in this trade.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

blount's good at that!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Weren't there rumblings about Spree signing with the Clips?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

there were, but the clips are capped out and sprewell apparently won't move for the 1 mil and change veteran minimum. apparently cassell was lobbying him to come, but to no avail. the more recent rumor is that they might bring in THE MAYOR fred hoiberg!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

which would be awesome, i'd cheer that guy like nobody's business

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

also holy crap, that pic of ricky davis in full afro on the daily dime is awesome. he needs to rock that all the time

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

The only reason to watch Celtics games anymore is to wait for Tommy to go BLEARHRRHGH on a ref after Paul Pierce kicks an opposing player in the eye and gets called for it.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Well, here's some interesting news today...

-Chris Andersen got kicked out of the league for drug use. Any guesses what he was taking?
-Since Jermaine O'Neal is #2 in voting for forwards in the East and will miss the All Star Game with an injury, that means that the league gets to choose someone to take his place. And the #3 in voting is...... Rasheed Wallace! I really think the Pistons should get 4 players in the All Star Game this year.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 28 January 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)
