The season doesn't start for me until a couple games before the conference tourneys. I am a horrible, fickle cbb fan.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

there is no way duke will be #1 in another 2, maybe 3 weeks.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 26 November 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

agreed. i don't know about indiana next week, but texas in austin will be tough.

also, why can't i spell? sigh. i need to proof my posts.

OMFG! tarheels within two! oh man. four freshman!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

oh well. expectations exceeded. looking forward to watching these guys play over the next couple years anyway.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

illinois = also overrated, but the tarheels really shoulda took that one.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

damn. i have to wait another day to see duke lose.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit was that gonzaga/washington game great last night. fast as hell. if you haven't gotten a chance to see the awkward grace of adam morrisson yet, you'll be in for a treat. (i liked the old haircut better, but why quibble?) by the looks of their schedule though, only the memphis game after christmas will be televised nationally.

tarheels over kentucky was a pleasant surprise. those guys gotta do some serious work on freethrows. also, duke was lucky as hell. just lose already!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

don't worry, they will.

i should check the kentucky online newspaper sites, maybe uk fans are calling for tubby's firing by now.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

by the looks of their schedule though, only the memphis game after christmas will be televised nationally.

Last year the Zags had a number of national ESPN games, but they were always the last game of the Big Monday or Super Tuesday triple-headers. so they start at 9:00 PST / Midnight EST. I think the Gonzaga basically said "sure, we'll start are games late if you'll put us on TV" I'd be surprised if they weren't doing it again this year..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

true enough. in fact, cbs has 'em against oklahoma state this weekend.

http://www.yocohoops.com/story/2005/12/5/13553/8619

Yoni Cohen on the season's first few weeks:

There are four fundamental realities that we have hinted at for several days that are known to everyone in the know in the inner circle of college basketball coverage (a/k/a: the Gang of 500) and we feel you should know them too.

The first one involves Duke and precisely stated, it goes like this: The potential for the Blue Devils to be upset decreases with every day of experience Coach K's freshmen accumulate.

The second one involves Connecticut and precisely stated, it goes like this: The potential for the Huskies to be upset decreases with every day Marcus Williams gets closer to becoming eligible.

The third one involves Texas and precisely stated, it goes like this: The potential for the Longhorns to be upset fluctuates daily based on the play of Daniel Gibson and P.J. Tucker.

The fourth one involves Villanova and precisely stated, it goes like this: The potential for the Wildcats to be upset increases with every game through which Jason Fraser puts his troubled knees.

With regard to UConn and Villanova, I think he's got a point: they're both great teams, but I can't help feeling like UConn is going to be unstoppable very soon, whereas Villanova is winning on borrowed time. I don't know another top-10 team whose fortunes would change so dramatically with the loss of a role player like Fraser.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

what i don't understand about the duke statement, precisely stated, is why these freshmen matter when you are starting four seniors, three of whom average over 30 minutes a game.

as for villanova, i listened to the bucknell game last night hoping for an upset. they just exploded twice for like 10 points in a minute, minute and a half, each (mostly on the back of foye). fraser played 16 minutes and had 2 points. (maybe they were saving those knees?) i don't think they are as shallow as is assumed. granted this is bucknell, but they beat syracuse in syracuse last week. yeah, yeah, syracuse is overrated and blah blah blah, but bucknell's no slouch. plus they have really bright orange road uniforms that are suh-weet.

plus yoni still owes me $25 from last year's bracket contest. i came in second! pay up!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

my bad, three starging seniors plus melchioni who's playing 24 minutes a game as sixth man.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

starting, obviously

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
i'm coming to accept the fact that duke ain't gonna lose for a long time. the press they put on bucknell today (i know...bucknell) was like a vice. scary. it was 4-2 then *poof* it was like 30-10.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

i'm just gonna keep on talking to myself and post about duke yet again. they absolutely embarrassed maryland. watching them is turning into a masochistic endeavor for me. i am amazed by their defense -- specifically their ability to steal. maryland had like 500 turnovers tonight and it seemed 399 of them came from steals. i cringe thinking about what they'll do to my beloved tar heels, whose passes are often like three week old lettuce.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

when the season started, i was very concerned about north carolina's BC, Arizona, Maryland stretch at the end of this month. now, the only thing arizona seems to do as a team is don sweatbands, bc ain't looking very acc-worthy, and the nc state win gives me hope for another road win at maryland. damn!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Friday, 13 January 2006 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a Duke fan. Just so yall can start hating early and not be suprised when I say positive things about them.

And I'm not from New England!

Jeff. (Jeff), Friday, 13 January 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Duke's first loss - Feb 4, Florida St, at Cameron.

Jeff. (Jeff), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

go ahead, obsess
about all those eastern teams
big ten's STRONG this year

my badgers are tough,
if they beat ohio state
they have a real shot

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

big ten's STRONG this year

i believe the same was said last year until an eastern team swept the conference out of the championship...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but before that
big ten teams killed lots of your
east coast darlings john

plus there are about
200 more teams out there,
small hoops factories

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, John (and everyone), I don't really care about East Coast / Midwest / West Coast / South / whatever bias. It's just teams. I'm just saying that the Big Ten is better this year than it was last year, and that Wisconsin could be a really great team. The end.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

suffice it to say, espn and espn2 pwns me tonight. nc state has to prove they can at least hang with duke and their deeper bench may give duke (4 guys averaging over 31 minutes (!) a game) some trouble. or maybe not.

tonight's game is really important for the badgers. they've played 16 games, with just three aways and they lost two those (minnesota being the only road win). both of those two losses are games they should have won to be considered "for real" -- especially wake forest, losers to depaul. so, no offense, but even if they do win tonight, they still won't convince me til after the illinois game and february when their schedule gets much much tougher.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

well I will let them know that you don't consider them for real yet.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

please do. i know they were concerned about my opinion of them as recently as never.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

haha

Illinois is clearly the class of the league; do you think they'll bounce back? Or are they SPOOKED now?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

illinois is really fun to watch. but i think they have a similar scheduling problem as (...sorry, i'm really not trying to be an asshole) wisconsin -- too many home games. now they've got 2 losses out of 3, both on the road. and that nc game was way too close given what it should have been. but, in champaign, with all that orange crushing down on you, that shit's formidable.

i give michigan state a lot of credit for their early schedule -- even if the tough teams they played (arizona, gonazaga, bc) are turning out to be varying degrees of hype. but damn, their last four games are going to be brutal -- ohio state, at indiana, wisconsin, illinois.

i mean, you're right, the big ten is much more interesting this year than last. the depth is similar to last year's acc. it's be fun to watch them beat eachother up. and they'll all be that much better for it come march.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

...and actually, michigan state just played the same schedule they have to close out the season just with the away/home games switched. illinois and wisconsin don't have nearly as harsh of scheduling.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

stick a fork in louisville.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

argh, badgers falling apart down the stretch. we are a young team and it's showing. but ohio state is no joke either.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

both those games last night were good watching. i was almost thrown off the treadmill at the gym when dockery got fouled on that three pointer. the insult of (ugh) melchioni turning it into a six point play... (also, i wonder if the rim had recently been replaced on the side duke had in the first half, cuz free throws weren't going in on that side of the court, hurting state in the second half.) anyway, at least watching duke get pushed around a bit made time fly.

as for wisconsin, i was impressed how they held on, even if both teams kinda sugged it in the last 5 minutes.

and saturday...damn, action packed:
- the bc / miami game will be interesting. if miami wins, they have a decent shot at second in the conference.
- wake has to win at nc state, which they probably won't.
- penn state should give ohio state at least a scare (and maybe even win), on their way to next season when the nittany lions will actually be a decent team.
- plus west virginia / ucla! oh man, i am geeking out...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Not to mention Syracuse/Villanova! Despite a setback home to UConn on Monday, my Orange are 2-1 in the middle of their toughest five-game stretch of the season; Big Monday sees them playing at unbeaten Pitt, who may already be in the Big East driver's seat. Winning one of those two games would be a serious boost to Syracuse's resume.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't get to watch it but carolina lost to... virginia?! a team for which espn couldn't locate a single game highlight to use to hype tonight's coverage so they just showed some poorly lit, grainy footage of the team coming out of the locker room? 14 turnovers with noel and hansbrough accounting for 10 of them? ugh...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

oh man. what a day...

OMG Wisconsin loses to North Dakota State. My friend Brian went to the game and said it was BRUTAL, team playing with no energy, team shooting 11% in the first half. So, y'know, UGH.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

i can't imagine what the hell happened in madison. in addition to the badgers losing two guys (which really fugs with their whole rotation, but shouldn't have meant *that* much given the competition), north dakota state has an ex-wisconsin assistant coach in the same job for them...so maybe they knew what was coming.

between georgetown, west virginia, st.john's/pitt, syracuse/villanova, ucon/louisville, yesterday was ginormous for the big east.

btw, during the 30 minutes that i watched of that syracuse/villanova game, the orangemen got SMOKED. especially the first 10 minutes, where i think they only had 8 points and nova was drilling in threes like they were layups and looked like they could take down anyone. whatever happened during the start of the second half, while i was in the shower is a mystery to me...

and... there is now a blueprint to beat duke (as laid out in the nc state game) -- don't fall for reddick's first head fake, get williams in foul trouble and take it inside (nc state had 52 points there, 40-something for georgetown). and you gotta be able to break their press, which georgetown did beautifully yesterday. teams that can probably do this: michigan state and west virginia.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

And Syracuse lost again tonight to Pittsburgh. The unbalanced Big East schedule isn't helping them any, but it's pretty apparent that they're way too thin up front (Darryl Watkins, in particular, has been next to useless this season - he fouled out tonight with THIRTEEN MINUTES LEFT) and way too reliant on the three in general, and they still don't have a reliable point guard (a problem that's plagued them and affected McNamara's game ever since Billy Edelin's first suspension). So frustrating.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

I saw the Zags/USF game live last night. Adam Morrison is fucking amazing. He had 26 points in like the first 12 minutes (and then proceeded to sleepwalk through the game until the last four minutes where he went on another tear.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

damn you espn for not showing bc/nc, michigan state/michigan, st. john's/uconn, or florida/south carolina (i'm hoping the gamecocks win at home, exposing florida (j'accuse!) as the frauds they are.)...

there are no off nights this year!

teams that can probably do this: michigan state and west virginia.

ha! maybe marshall can beat duke now, too...

at least florida lost.

hey, jay bilas can be funny!

As a child, you should have been educated about the transitive property of equality, which goes something like this: If A is greater than B, and B is greater than C, then A is greater than C. It transfers nicely into the realm of "my dad can beat up your dad" and college basketball. Georgetown beat Duke. UConn beat Georgetown. Marquette beat UConn. Wisconsin beat Marquette. North Dakota State beat Wisconsin. Therefore, by the transitive property, North Dakota State is my new No. 1 team.
