Waiting for Amare: The Phoenix Suns thread

After beating the blazers 130-85 tonight, the suns deserve their own thread. Steve Nash has somehow turned Boris Diaw into something resembling a basketball player. Also, this: http://stevenashmvp.com/quicktime/kick_it.mov

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

omg! i was literally about to start a thread with the exact same title!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

and then reply that with seven straight wins, could the suns do better than all the expert's "they'll stay .500 until amare returns" guesses?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

my answer is yes, especially if boris diaw continues to be a freak- who tried to make him a point guard? i've seen him defend centers and play with his back to the basket. he can pass too though!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

the suns are my favorite bandwagon team and i'd been waiting since the majerle/kevin johnson/barkley era to jump back in, so last year was very satisfying.

honestly it speaks incredibly highly of steve nash that he has taken a second straight collection of bits & pieces and made them win. i mean james jones? diaw? who were these dudes? it's like the shaq effect (ie mark madsen would be an accountant now if it weren't for the daddy...oh and his dancing skillz)

admittedly nash has one of the most flexible players in the L with him in marion, but who else could lose a near-mvp-type-dude and keep on truckin?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, keep talking when these guys run up against my TRUE WARRIORS tonight!

leeee, your trash talk cursed you! that looked like a great matchup though, just looks like richardson had an off night.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Those were not my TURE WARRIORS! Murphy was sick with flu!

Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gentleee as you move (Leee), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

james jones was a legit player before coming to phx. diaw, tho, that was out of nowhere. who knows how many all-stars lurk on the hawks!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 9 December 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Diaw was tearing up Eurobasket this summer.

Current Mood: Embarrassing Christian Laettner (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

i'm mad at kurt thomas for starting again though- diaw almost became the first player i can ever think of with G-F-C eligibility in fantasy leagues

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 9 December 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

jams, james jones was definitely a legit player in spurts, but didn't he average like 5 ppg? granted that's typical for a soph on a loaded team, but i can hand you like ten more dajuan wagners who fit the same profile and never double their output under nash's watch

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 9 December 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Amare said earlier this week he was moving up to light jogging soon, he felt no pain in his knee, and expected to be back around the all-star break but didn't want to put a time on it.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Saturday, 10 December 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
went to suns-clippers last night. nash is just amazing to watch in person, though he did get away with an utterly blatant double dribble during a key run. they were surprisingly evenly matched except for a few things:
-no one could stop the nash/marion connection; kaman kept getting rotated to nash on the pick-n-rolls and nash was just burning him over and over
-clips were totally confounded by phoenix's ZONE DEFENSE! i was surprised by just how effective the sun's defense was. it could have been cracked by good midrange jumpers, but no one was hitting them for the clips, and brand and kaman saw double and triple teams every time they touched the ball.
-man does this team fuckin whip the ball around. EVERYONE seems to love passing, maybe with the exception of barbosa, who was definitely displaying some AI-level kamikaze stuff last night. if he had a better handle he'd be dynamite.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

what's the line on nash's d?
what stood out for you seeing him in person? quickness?

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:45 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
never answered your question oops!

nash's d is honestly not that bad. he doesn't get beat off the dribble very easily but he's not very good at fighting through picks. usually he cuts under them and picks his man back up on the other side. i still wouldn't want to bring the ball up against him because he looks like he could steal the ball at any second.

what stands out seeing him in person is his quickness generally- both hands and foot speed- and the old saw court vision. he just seems to play the game like he's watching from the stands- the second he gets his hand on a rebound he's hitting someone 3/4 of the way downcourt with a pass. his drives into and under the basket are astonishing too, he's almost as fearless as AI. different skills, AI just hammers his way in and doesn't care if he gets thrashed to the court, nash slithers in and out before the big guys know what happened.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

he rebounds amazingly well too, i have a soft spot for little guys who always seem to come up with the ball out of a pack.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

So when is Amare coming back? It's supposed to be soon right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

they're saying sometime this month. i'm a bit split on that; they'll clearly need him to get re-integrated into the team and they're so thin up front right now, but how effective will he be, and would it be better just to let him sit out?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

sadly the suns have kind of put me in the position of rooting for tim thomas, something i'd never thought i'd have to do

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

that game against the mavs on sunday was dynamite. totally entertaining. dirk yelling at teammates like last year's playoffs! boris diaw doing everything!

the mavs are so freakin deep though...if they are healthy, their second unit is marquis daniels/stackhouse/devin harris/keith v.h./chicken fries, which could be plopped down in atlanta or toronto and be a reasonable starting five.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

frankly though i don't know how dirk doesn't average like 30+ per game. who can really guard him?

same deal for marion, i think the only reason he doesn't score 30+ a night is that they don't bother running any plays for him.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

The problem with Dirk is that he's a 7' shooting guard. In the loss to the Spurs, Bruce Bowen, who is about a half foot shorter, was keeping him pretty well contained.

Pwnjabi MC (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, dirk's post-up game isn't quite all that. he has great spin moves but he really should work on bulking up a tiny bit more and being able to back down to the bucket when he gets a smaller forward or guard rotated onto him.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

that dallas game was indeed great, tho chris webber choking in the indy-philly game before it was equally entertaining. is he the least clutch player in the league?

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Al3_zQRgEQQlsn8wX.Y28Zm8vLYF?slug=ap-suns-stoudemire&prov=ap&type=lgns

And Amare may be back as early as tomorrow. So does this completely screw up the teams chemistry or does this launch them to the top of the pack?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 23 March 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

wow, 20 points and 9 rebounds...in 19 minutes! he looked pretty sharp, honestly, not quite 100% but even half-speed amare just slays the blazers. i just hope he really is back and healthy enough and isn't potentially doing himself more damage by coming back.

i think he'll work in just fine- his presence obviously fires them up, nash and marion love playing with him, and for everyone else he can just slot in as a more-mobile-and-meaner version of kurt thomas, who they were used to playing with anyway. the guy i'd be worried about would be diaw- but frankly they probalby will just bump him over and play a sort-of-three-PF line (amare, marion, diaw)...and diaw's passing seems like it would lead to a lot of quick passes in the post leading to big amare dunks.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

and i'd rather have him than not for that inevitable second round matchup against dallas.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it basically just means less shots for Diaw, but he's got perfect complementary skills rebounding and assist-wise.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Phoenix traded Boris Diaw, Raja Bell, and Sean Singletary to
Charlotte for Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley, and a 2010 2nd round draft
pick.

I haven't watched much ball yet this year, but this seems like a bad deal for the suns....?

J-Rich is one of my favorite dudes. He would've been even better in D'Antoni's system, but he can play half-court slog pretty well also.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

one hopes the suns will return at least somewhat to their speedy ways as they have a bunch of dudes nash amare jrich barbosa who are better in that environment

ice cr?m, Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

Diaw's is quoted as saying "It definitely wasn't as fun," It wasn't as exciting for the fans. It's not as fun for everybody [on the team]. I'll always remember Phoenix with Mike [D'Antoni]. We went from a winning team that was the most exciting team in the league to a half-winning team that wasn't exciting at all."

^^^ this

i like picking up richardson though, even in GS he seemed a little underutilized, but are they kind of admitting that picking up shaq played to no one's strengths? and basically annoying amare and nash in one move was probably not the way to go

i think nash will like playing with jrich though

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

When you buy yourself a Shaq, your team will play Shaq's game, I am very sorry to say. However, one less contending team to worry about in the Western Conference clears some extra room for the Blazers to elbow their way into a decent seed in the playoffs.

It's tough," Nash said after a big exhale. "While I'll welcome my new teammates with open arms, it's tough when you lose your best friend. It's tough when you lose two of your best buddies. It's tough and it hurts. It's tough...It's a tough business."

Okay, so the new rumors involve Amare Stoudemire to the Heat, with the Heat losing Michael Beasley (to either the Suns or Sixers, if the blog post's theory plays out). The Miami Herald's beat writers are also discussing viable scenarios for Stoudemire.

If he gets to Miami, he and Wade can be resigned in the offseason, with even more money available to sign another maximum contract.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 11 February 2010 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

Ugh. Via Twitter:

I play very well w/Shaq. I averaged more pts last year WITH him & played better D. You guys can stop saying we don't play well together

Do not want Stoudemire in Cleveland.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 16 February 2010 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

having to mesh amare stoudemire with lebron and shaq would be a great problem to have

they want a fapz (tremendoid), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

i'd rather mesh amare and wade. then add lebron in the offseason.
