Hey folks. George Blaha here. Voice of the Detroit Pistons. This should be an interesting season for the Detroit Pistons. They won the championship in 2004, and came within a few minutes of winning a second championship last season.

As always seems to be for the Pistons, the biggest off-season story was a coaching change. In case you've been living in a cave, Flip Saunders takes over from Larry Brown. While most commentators have focused on whether there will be less distractions and if the players will be hungry to prove that Brown wasn't the only reason for their success, I think they're overlooking the fact that Saunders brings a different philosophy than Rick Carlisle or Larry Brown. Will the Pistons be able to avoid the scoring droughts that have plagued them at times the last four years? Will Saunders be able to integrate the Pistons bench, which all of a sudden seems deeper than ever thanks to an influx of youth? Will we see the Pistons play zone? Only the regular season will tell.

The only news to look out for in the next few weeks is who makes the cut. The Pistons have 16 players under salary but only 15 slots. Alex Acker, a second round point guard from Pepperdine, looks to be on the bubble. But, with Lindsay Hunter out with an injury, the Pistons are short at the 1, so Dumars might instead elect to trade Ronald Dupree. Dupree's got some serious ups, but there's a log-jam at the 3. A trade for a future draft pick wouldn't be out of the question.

And hey, how about Darko? Did you see that dunk the other night? Boy I tell you, it doesn't get much better than this. We'll see you on November 2 at the Palace for the season opener against the Sixers. Detroit's ready to go to work!

you should make one of Darko shining the pine.

But actually, the Pistons site really does have stencils to make jack o'lanterns of your favorite Pistons players (and also Hooper their mascot).

YEAH don't fuck with the Pistons bench!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Booyeah! I like the PIstons chances this year. They're running! They're taking shots before the last 5 secs of the shot clock! DARKO IS PLAYING MEANINGFUL MINUTES! Bring on the Pacers.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

And they scored 108 points in a non-overtime game!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Man I'm loving the Flip Saunders era... This might actually be a better team than 03-04 and 04-05.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Talk about an assbeating last night...although this nastiness may have had something to do with the team's intensity level.

Apparently they didn't see the montage and didn't even know about it until after the game. I'd hate to see how much worse that beating would've been if they had the extra motivation.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm willing to give the Maloofs and the Kings management a pass because they hadn't seen the montage before the game, but Leland Patton you are on notice!

Awesome win. Never in doubt :-)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 November 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

That game felt like playoff basketball, which is just something you don't get to see before the All-Star break. I hope these two teams meet in the finals and Amare's healthy.

(P.S. I'll have a much better time watching this season if I delude myself into thinking a Spurs finals victory isn't a foregone conclusion.)

SUCKAS!!!!

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 4 December 2005 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

sheed is such a jackass. bulls will win the next meeting.

oops (Oops), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

Theresa, you are a Pistons fan? sweet! I never knew. yeah, the boys are looking great this year. Even that second game they lost against Washington was outstanding, battled back and took 'em to two overtimes after falling behind earlier. I was psyched I got to see it while in michigan over Thanksgiving.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, my little sister got me hooked last year (she goes to school in michigan)! the funny thing is that i am in love with the pistons but i really don't care about any other team to the point that i rarely know who any of the players on the opposing team are. so sad that i can't watch their games, but i try to keep up to speed from their website. they are playing chicago while i am in chicago and i got all excited, but sadly, the game is at the palace so no live pistons action for me :-(

tres letraj (tehresa), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

actually, detroit played at chicago

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

i was referring they meet again dec 16 at the palace. i guess i should have used future tense...

tres letraj (tehresa), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

*to when* they meet again

tres letraj (tehresa), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

oooh i couldn't follow along online during the game tonight but when i went to check the score just now i was very worried by the close win... but hey, they still won!!!

tres letraj (tehresa), Saturday, 10 December 2005 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

i really think leee's trash talk is backfiring

Sym Sym (sym), Saturday, 10 December 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

man this team is good. the game last night just demonstrated the difference between a partly-new starting unit that's pretty hot and will definitely make the playoffs (clips) and a starting five that doesn't change and is just loaded with talent at every spot and will contend for the championship (pistons).

the pistons bench was pretty impressive in that 3rd quarter, too- i think you really only need 1-2 good dudes coming off the bench, especially when your starting five is as hole-free as detroit's, but they were looking alright. i still think arroyo suxorz.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 12 December 2005 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

..now ... losing to that big doofus Okur? ..*that* stinks..

anyway, can't win 'em all. still kicking it, lookout 95 Bulls...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

Pistons-Nuggest 370-pointer from this day in 1983 on Classic today...still time to tune in, it hasn't even gone to overtime #1 yet.

Last night wasn't a bad night to pick up a L, despite it probably making Memo's week.

oh my god what a team.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 30 December 2005 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

It really feels like they're toying with teams this season... Keep it close during the first half, then get a lead in the third, then hit some clutch shots and make some key shots in the fourth. Anyway, this season is by far the best I've seen these Pistons play. I just wish the playoffs would hurry up and come!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 30 December 2005 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

it's such an announcer cliche, but that really did feel like a playoff-intensity game. the crowd in detroit is so awesome- if i were rasheed i'd be firing constantly just to hear everyone go "threeeeee!"

chauncey hit some freakin clutch shots, though. that sequence where he nailed a tough jumper and then drove and passed to sheed, running into a brick wall of shaq in the process, was definitely some mvp-level shit.

you could tell wade was pissed he had 5 fouls so they couldn't really go 1-on-1

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

also why are there so many damn denver games on national tv this year? i guess they were supposed to be good. but dammit, let's see some more golden state, clips, wizards and bucks. enough with the denver, seattle and kings on tnt already

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, i know they have to make these schedules way in advance, but still, i think denver is on tnt's thursday game every week. i don't like carmelo THAT much

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

awwwww yeaaaahhhh.....

see you in the finals SA

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

I really really hope they cool off for the second half of the season. :(

ohmyface (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

cliche but ... Pistons really did "toy" with the Knickerbockers down the stretch tonight.

really really sad display by the Kinckerbockers. I don't say that as a hater (big Zeke fan of course) *or* as a Pistons fan ... the lack of competitive spirit was alarming. Time after time, Knickerbocker defenders rolled and left Pistons unguarded for uncontested threes and etc etc. the just sort of gave up and got rocked by really basic NBA offensive sets.. sad

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

"We had some phantom technical fouls called when we had Rasheed. I know that. He'd just scream, he was so happy with a dunk and the next thing you know it's a technical foul. If I ever dunked, I would have screamed. If I'd go up and sky and dunk one, I'd scream too." --college basketball's all-time winningest coach Dean E. Smith

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Bit of trivia: Pat Summit of Tennessee has beat out Dean Smith as 'college basketball's winningest coach with 882 wins 172 losses. Dean Smith is still the NCAA's "Men's" College Basketball winningest coach though.

I've never liked that record going to Pat Summit. Women's basketball just wasn't - and still isn't - as competitive across the board. How many Summit wins were racked up over years when there were only a half-dozen good programs?

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Saturday, 8 April 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Can I just say that Ben Wallace refusing the re-enter the game on Friday is the biggest non-story of the season? Having Scottie Pippen and Mark Jackson during today's pre-game show moan on and on about how the Pistons are in trouble was ridiculous. Have they looked at the standings lately? Not to mention that by demolishing the Pacers I think the Pistons proved my point.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 9 April 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

oh man, today's game was just sad! i was literally laughing watching it. and b wallace with 22 rebounds awesome! and good for lindsey hunter with the field goals!

also, i'm a girl, so i thought the feature on rip hamilton's mask where he did the napolean dynamite and hannibal lector impressions was cute, even if he did say "hello, kelis" instead of "hello, clarice".

Detroit Pistons, WHA HAPPENED?

c('°c) (Leee), Sunday, 12 November 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Dumars hasn't added one useful player in like two and a half years. Now you have the big four instead of the big five, and when Rip's on the bench, they really don't have a chance. Unless Maxiell turns into a player or McDyess finds the fountain of youth, I think this team will wind up in the 6 to 8 seeds, and potentially in the lottery.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Pish, the season's just started... I'd rather have the Pistons finally develop a bench and peak at the end of the season than peak around the All-Star Break like they did last year. They'll wind up around the 3-5 seed and make it to second round or the Conference Finals.

I mean, ATLANTA is the top team in the East right now and Phoenix and Dallas are in the lottery in the West. Think that'll last?
