I love how Lakers fans are the most unrealistic people in the world about their team's chances to win a championship...

12) Which team will win the NBA title?

44.2% Pistons
20.6% Spurs
7.8% Lakers
7.6% Mavericks
5.5% Heat
3.2% Suns
2.7% Cavaliers
2.4% Nets
1.6% Bulls
1.4% Kings
0.7% Nuggets
0.7% Wizards
0.6% Pacers
0.5% Clippers
0.3% Bucks
0.2% Grizzlies

How'd that work last time back in 2004? Oh yeah, now I remember!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the Lakers have been playing pretty well lately. It isn't plausible, but possible.

Anyway, I'm going with Detroit because they are the rare dynasty comprised largely of likeable people. Although the same could be said about the Spurs.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 April 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be at the two Kings/Spurs games in Sacramento. There's nothing quite like seeing playoff basketball in person, but I'm not terribly optimistic about my Kings' chances this year. If they pick up a game or two at Arco, it will undoubtedly be the result of me screaming at the top of my lungs from the cheapest seats in the house.

Wishful thinking, though. I think Detroit will win this year, barring a Tayshun leg contusion or Rasheed Wallace getting thrown out of the league for flaring his nostrils.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Saturday, 22 April 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Observations from today are:

That foul call at the end of the NJ-Pacers game was ridiculous, but the Nets didn't deserve to win with that awful, stagnant "let's watch Carter go one-on-one" offense

Regarding my derision of the Lakers, how can a team that starts Luke Walton, SmOOsh Parker and Kwame Brown in a playoffs game be expected to be a legitimate championship contender???? Even if Kobe scores 81 again.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

the nets were terrible in that game. the talking heads really jumped the gun in calling them potential championship contenders in the middle of those late-season win streaks- they're a great team that goes exactly four deep.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

and barely nbdl-level past that

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Letting VC jack up a million jump shots (some that didn't even hit rim) was a pretty piss-poor offensive strategy. I think the Nets readjust and the series goes 6 or 7 games, but wow that was an awful display.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Keep on showin those pistons no respect........... s.a. gets swept this year! go detroit!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 29 April 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

c(''c) (Leee), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa I just heard the Stranglers' "Peaches" being played over the PA at the Dallas-Memphis game!!! Awesome.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

the defense in the nuggets/clippers game tonight was horrendous on both sides. i've seen more effort and technique during local pickup games. pitiful.

the lakers are indeed a fun team to watch of late. if anything, kobe has been trying to pass too much, or at least forcing passes in attempt to make a highlight.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 30 April 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

As big an egg as Detroit laid last night (how the hell did they let the Bucks shoot 60%??), today I'm much happier being a Pistons fan than I would be if I were a fan of the Miami Heat. That team looks pretty unhinged, although it's a pretty safe bet that the refs won't let Shaq get into foul trouble three games in a row.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

I want to see a Bulls/Clippers final.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 30 April 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 April 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think the referee's doing all they can to hand him the opportunities helps out a little bit.

He should really cut out that raping shit though.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 30 April 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

that shaq trade is looking better every day!

dan (dan), Monday, 1 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

I just think back to like, the last two years when sir charles would go on TNT and bemoan the fact that the NBA expanded the first round to best-of-seven, complaining about how boring the games are and how ridiculous it was to draw it out and how every outcome was a forgone conclusion ... and I'd be like "You are right, Sir Charles!" I mean I was totally with him on that point..

but wow this years first round so far is one of the best I can ever remember ... feels like semifinal rounds in almost every series!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 1 May 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

compare:

7 seed lakers (kobe surrounded by very young underachievers, busts, and cast-offs) enjoying a love fest while outplaying a 2 seed (lead by an mvp, a three-time all-star, and the league's most-improved player)

2 seed heat (most-dominant-ever surrounded by future hall-of-famers and wily veterans) imploding (why do shaq teams always end up self-destructing?) against a .500 (in the east!) 7 seed

NBA: watch out for Dallas

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

Hey congratulations, they managed to sweep a team that has never won a playoff game.

COME ON, that's like bragging about breaking your sister's nose and then proclaiming "WBC AND IBF, WATCH YR BACK OK?"

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

better than anyone else did

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

Is there anyone on the Grizzlies bench that would make one doubt their team's chances of winning any game? If you say Pau Gasol, that's a throat chop. That team is built to squeeze into the playoffs so that they can be routinely bounced out by a contender. They shouldn'ta traded Bonzi!

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

well, there was no shortage of NBA people saying this series was going 6 or 7 games. All I'm saying is that Dallas ran over a supposedly good defensive team much quicker and much easier than most people were predicting. Sure, I thought Dallas would win this series, but had this been the Spurs doing the same thing, people would be calling it typical championship basketball.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

dallas has looked really good. i thought memphis matched up well with them and would give them some trouble.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Headline of tomorrow's Dallas Morning News: "Dirk Defies Pundits, Pummels Mediocre Memphis"

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Memphis is the new Minnesota, only without a Garnett kind of player to put up something resembling a fight.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I've been to playoff games at Arco before and it does get loud, but I don't think I've ever heard anything like the crowd at the two games this series. It's like listening to a jet take off for two and a half hours. The Spurs looked visibly shaken down the stretch, especially when they missed all those freethrows in the fourth quarter. I can see why they wouldn't want to come back.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

I am cautiously optimitstic about the Spurs' prospects right now, but Ginobili needs to sucker punch Ron Artest out of commission in order to be remotely effective. Most frustrating "star" to watch of all time.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

this is a potentially controversial time to be living in los angeles!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

that said: dallas is totally hot right now

clippers looking solid, but will probably get exposed

unfortunately we probably have to watch them play the lakers- somehow i hate this team even more now that it doesn't suck, when previously my only reason for really hating it was that it sucked. somehow kobe passing the ball and hustling just seems like a total brownnose move to MVP voters. not that it isn't providing massively entertaining/frustrating basketball. i still hate it.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

agreed that this is probably the best 1st round in a dog's age, cf wizards/cavs battle that will leave the survivor at detroit's mercy

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm actually pulling for the Lakers (for the first time in history). I've loved watching their games, but then I hate Phoenix, so it didn't take much. and another vote for this first round being the best playoffs I can remember

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

dominique--you pull for the lakers and i'll pull for the mavericks and i'll see you at the western conference finals.

i don't really see kobe brownnosing for an mvp vote that happened ten days ago. it would be kind of dumb. kobe gets ripped when he shoots 30 times and ripped when he shoots fifteen. he feeds on the hate!

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

who is this dwayne you guys speak of? SHOW SOME RESPECT TO FUCKED UP SPELLINGS OF COMMON NAMES.
i'd bet that dwyane is more man-crushed on than any sports figure in recent times.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 16 June 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

"this is a surprisingly clean series so far though, no?"

"No" -- Jerry Stackhouse.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 16 June 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

If the games stay physical, Miami will win. Plus, the Mavs are going to have to double-team Wade now, forcing single coverage on O'Neal. It's a match-up problem for the Mavs, who -- with Nowitski well covered -- now seem to be the team facing the match-up problems.

We'll see. Don't bet against the Heat.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 16 June 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I still say six games to dallas. Caveman Dirk will rise.

Though I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see Shaq get a ring without Kobe and it would do my heart good to see Zo, J Dub and Shandon "we'll throw him in too" Anderson with that hardware.

On the other hand, Gary Payton getting a ring would infuriate me. So I'm torn.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

i don't love the mavs or anything, but i figure that shaq & riley already have enough rings between them.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Dallas winning means no ring for Karl Malone and Patrick Ewing, but one for Keith "Great White Hope" Van Horn and Jason Terry.

Still, Adrian Griffin and Darrell Armstrong! ESPECIALLY Darrel Armstrong, I used to love him in Orlando. Again, I'm torn.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

I wish i knew how many times in the past month I've seen Vince Carter say that you don't feed the dog people food. I wonder if he is happy that he made it this far in the playoffs.

Jeff. (Jeff), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

i don't love the mavs or anything, but i figure that shaq & riley already have enough rings between them.

Thank you. Although I do love the mavs and everything.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

For a flagrant one? Where he went back and gave Shaq a pound afterward? I gotta agree; that's bullshit. It was a bad foul, but not one to suspend anyone over.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

forks, don't you think jason terry has been much more clutch than ewing or malone ever were? If Dallas pulls it out, I could see him getting the series MVP, considering that Dirk has been crap all series. He can be the first playoff MVP to get suspended for puching a dude in the balls!

Sym Sym (sym), Saturday, 17 June 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

just because basketball players have fathers, and it is father's day, doesn't mean we need to hear an anecdote about every single one of them.

Sym Sym (sym), Monday, 19 June 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

That was one of the best games I've ever seen.
Dwayne just wrote some legend shit right there. I still don't see them winning in Dallas, but whoa.

Sym, I simply don't like Terry. Can't justify it; he's had a great series. He just rubs me the wrong way.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

Though the ball punching was pretty cool.

Can we talk about how intense Wade got in that last quarter? Really, not since Jordan, y'know?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think I just like Terry because he always looks high.

Sym Sym (sym), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

And yeah Dwyane is the most amazing thing ever. That was the best finals game this century.

Sym Sym (sym), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

I have never seen a player have a better 17 minute stretch than Wade had in the fourth and overtime. Ever.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 19 June 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'm worried about Miami winning in Dallas, too. But you have to like their chances at this point. Also, the Mavericks -- normally, a very good, very poised team -- seem to have come unglued, no? From moving to another hotel far away from the arena after Game 4, to Dirk's shooting woes, to the bizzaro Time Out incident, to Dirk kicking basketballs and equipment after Game 5, to reliable shooters missing FTs at crucial moments, to Avery Johnson's post- game comments about the late foul on Wade in Game 5, it seems like the Mavericks have melted down in this Series.

Maybe they can turn things around in Dallas. But I wouldn't count on it.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 19 June 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Dallas will not win 3 games.

I just wanted to repeat that. It might be my last chance.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 19 June 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I am shocked that no one has mentioned what a bullshit foul the last one was. The Mavs play tight D, force Wade into a impossible off balance shot (which he takes and MISSES completely) and then suddenly they get called for ticky-tacky bullshit which the refs have been letting ride for the previous ten minutes. Pathetic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 19 June 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

I, too, thought it wasn't a foul.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 19 June 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone knows NBA officiating is shit. Everyone hates the NBA for having shit officiating. But the NBA does nothing. Why? Does it not hurt their ratings enough (I'm watching because I'm a Dallas fan - if it was the Lakers vs. the Heat, no way)?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 19 June 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

One positive in last night's Stackless Dwyane-a-Rama was that I finally hit on Dirk's definitive nickname. You've heard of the Mailman? Well, now deliveries come via THE COSMIC COURIER, suckas! Please promulgate in time for game six.

brianiast (briania), Monday, 19 June 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

That's because you're wondering too much about whether Princess Peach's has been raped or not!

And I think peeps here are slightly overstating Dwyade's clutchiosity -- no longer a Kobe, not quite a Jordan.

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 19 June 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

I've started calling Dirk "Captain Caveman".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not saying he's amazingly clutch in general, but he was 100% clutch in those 17 minutes.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

So about 86% clutch for the entire game?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

NB: I ain't seen shit of the Finals. Because I suck.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

I've started calling Dirk "Captain Caveman".

haha!

I'm going to be sad when they're over. The playoffs have been about all that's kept me going for the past few weeks. How sad. This is why I don't go out of my way to watch during the regular season.

No longer Captain Caveman, now Dirk Nowhereski.

I'm impressed; I didn't think they had it in them.

the f'in heat?

more like I didn't think the mavs had losing in them. How could they let Shazam and sidekick (I don't care how good he is he ain't MJ jr.) psyche them out so much?

Calling Dwyane Wade a sidekick is wrong on so many levels. Thin-toine and Mint Chocolate Chip are the sidekicks. Dwyane Wade is Batman.

I was trying to insult Wade obviously.

Hence the question mark. I didn't know who he was talking about.
