Is It Too Early to Start a Summer 2006 Offseason Transactions and Rumors Thread?

When I heard Isaiah was interested in trading for Kenyon Martin, I could hardly imagine anything more appropriate until I read on ESPN.com's rumors page that the Nuggs are considering swapping him for Zach Randolph. If anyone was ever destined to play for the Blazers, it's Kenyon Martin. This could be perfect.

it is inevitable that kenyon goes to one or the other. it is his destiny. if i were the blazers, i'd be making the offer very publicly just to see what else isaiah will throw in.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

and it's not too early- the rumblings are that corey maggette is going to be moved this summer, and the clips are still in the playoffs! it kind of says something that he couldn't reclaim a starting spot from quinton ross aka micro-bowen. he's be quite a pickup for a team in need of some offense. it'd be like getting vince carter without the baggage and the tendency towards lazy jumpshots. who could the clips get in return though?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

and do the pacers look really bad for not pulling the trigger on the artest-for-maggette deal? maggette was hurt but peja isn't exactly iron man either!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

yes, yes they do. they probably would have won that series with maggette.

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

does Kenyon have an
soon-expiring contract, or
terminal disease?

if so, this is gold
for my suffering Blazers,
if not then we're hosed

(actually though
what we've lacked is toughness so
maybe it's not bad....)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

If I recall correctly, Kenyon has several expensive years left on his contract. He also has back and knee problems.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Five more years at $10mil+ per year (from hoopshype). Seems like the perfect Isiah Thomas contract (along with the bad knee)!!

The guy who owns the Knicks must be the stupidest man in the universe.

With Adelmania officially over in Sacramento, who's next? Rumors are that Don Nelson could replace him, but if that happens, I will probably scream a lot and go on an extended hobo-punching spree.

My top three replacement candidates: The Notorious SVG, Terry Porter, Eric Musselman.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand why the Maloofs fired Adelman. I get the whole wanting to start a new leaf thing, but all the dude did was get the team into the playoffs every year. I mean, losing to the Spurs in 6 is hardly a terrible season.

Add PJ Carlesimo to the list of possible replacements. Seems like the perfect guy to handle Artest, what with the choking and all.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

If PJ Carlesimo coaches again I will be shocked.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

he's an assistant with the spurs now isn't he? i think that he has said he's assistant for life or something though- i wouldn't want the agita of being a head coach after getting gripped by spree.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

musselman would be a good choice, he seems like a smart guy and got the warriors to start overachieving. i think with the new-blood kings it'd be best not to recycle one of the proven not-quite-champion coaches. try somebody new, lawrence frank style!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile, in his spacious San Diego-area home, the large redhead picked up his phone and cooed, in that honey-and-gravel voice so familiar to basketball fans everywhere, "Hello?"

"Bill, it's Joe Maloof."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if Reggie Miller will ever coach. He seems level-headed and has a mind for the game.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

that's not gonna get it done.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Reggie would make a good announcer too (maybe not as good as his sister though, although I guess Reggie is used to that by this point.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Reggie would make a good announcer too

Isn't he currently an announcer for TNT?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Holy Christ, don't even joke about Bill Walton coaching the Kings. I just soiled myself out of fear.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Doh! Damn you exodus of sports from network television!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Prob with Musselman is three-fold:

1. He's short.
2. He never played pro.
3. He tends to overcoach, telling players during games where to go on offense and defense.

1 + 2 + 3 = few players will want to play for him, much less give him respect.

PS - I like Musselman!

Are you saying NBA players don't like nerds?

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

This is pretty intersting for a number of reasons:

Maloofs downplay Nellie ball
Porter and Carlesimo are identified as targets
And then there's this...

Nelson already works for the Maloofs as one of the stars in a television project that could wind up on HBO. George Clooney is producing a show for the Maloofs' entertainment arm in which Nelson serves as the coach of a fictional expansion team, along with former NBA stars Vlade Divac, Norm Nixon and Marques Johnson.

This could be pretty awesome, what with lots of footage of Divac taking a smoke break before practice and all.

rumors in Portland
are that Blazers might bring in
KIKI VANDEWEGHE

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

to play?

Are Portland Trailblazers games the PDX equivalent of a a Kill Whitey party?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

No.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Larry Brown to the Warriors?

Although speculation has centered on Sacramento, which has an opening for a coach, a person close to Brown told Newsday that Golden State is more likely to be the well-traveled Brown's next employer. The Warriors are owned by Brown's neighbor, Chris Cohan, who resides less than one-tenth of a mile from Brown in East Hampton.

Yay rich guys being neighbors!

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Say what you want about the Knicks collection of overpriced vets, but they add up to a much better talent pool than Golden State currently has.
