08-09 ILH Fantasy Basketball: like AD&D with power forwards instead of magic swords

hey all,
rob here. so- should we have another installment of ilh/ile fantasy hoops? i think we've had a league for what, four years running now? with the exception of one nba.com year we've stuck to yahoo, which i liked better just in terms of the tools and look. we're down to the wire for this year so i'm ready to set up the league today if there's some interest. major questions:

regular 8-category? there's always some debate as this skews a little scoring-heavy since points and percentages count, but i like that ft % negates the value of dumbasses who can't hit their free throws

draft?? i'm thinking this weekend since the season kicks off tuesday. sunday morning-ish has usually worked- i'm pacific time but willing to draft pretty early.

who will be the first to draft someone out for the season with an injury?? can i steal chris paul at the end of the first round again (roffle)?

ok you know the drill from there...if there's at least moderate interest i'll generate the league and post the details later today.

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

oh i just remembered, so last year we used turnovers which i think some leagues don't do...i kind of like them because i think the deron williamses and chris paulses should be more valuable than shoot-first/butterfingers-handle "point" "guards" but maybe that is controversial y/n?

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

I rule the roost here so you all better bring your A-games for second place.

Yo, weren't we going to do an informal keeper thing since we ditched the NBA.com keeper league? I actually wouldn't mind *too* much since otherwise, I'd be obliged to keep Kobe.

Leee, Thursday, 23 October 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

And as always, here's a direct link to enter above info.

Leee, Thursday, 23 October 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, 9am pacific draft on a sunday? Is that changeable? (I work at a bar you see.)

Clay, Friday, 24 October 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

The alex english muffins are in the buildinnnng

al gore rhythm nation (m bison), Friday, 24 October 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

oh yes, i am THE DOLEAC.

Clay, Friday, 24 October 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

we could do an evening draft? it's still changeable, but usually sunday am has worked out ok...other than phil-two missing the draft every year

welcome!!

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote for evening, but I missed the draft last year and ended up fourth or so in the final standings so maybe it's for the best that I don't pick my own dudes.

Clay, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

the stl hawks are in! I don't know anything about the nba but somehow that usually helps.

bnw, Friday, 24 October 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

but usually sunday am has worked out ok

The hell it does! And what about our keeper thing??? U+K.

Leee, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

hm...matt c was our commish for the nba league last year so i can't get into that league (also have no idea where the page is or my login) but i think i'd just as soon start fresh?? than do keepers??

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Friday, 24 October 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

ok lets keep it at sunday 9 am PST unless there is major uproar

also anyone who knows regulars from the last few years who aren't in, get 'em on there asap

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Friday, 24 October 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

MAJOR UPROAR. But that's because I like to sleep in so that I can draft a lot of Warriors in the 4-5th rounds. Then again, I seem to recall that last year's draft was in the PM and it coincided with my worst year ever.

Here's the link to last year's league (and you can look up the team managers): http://archive.fantasysports.yahoo.com/archive/nba/2007/64463

Leee, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

i think you can get your warriors later than that this year leeeee

Are you logged into Yahoo with the same ID that you used last year?

I have nothing to say to Hibachi that can't be said on the fantasy court.

Leee, Saturday, 25 October 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

Same ID, yeah.

Oh god, tomorrow at 9? :(

Leee, Saturday, 25 October 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

does this count as major outcry yet?

Clay, Saturday, 25 October 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

Aaaah Troy Murphy?????? He's the closest thing to a Warrior? I blame you, 9am draft time!

How did I get TMac in the 9nth? Is he injured again?

Leee, Sunday, 26 October 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

aw snap the computer did me good...amare, dwight howard, duncan, and chandler on the frontlines. prerankings are yr pals

al gore rhythm nation (m bison), Sunday, 26 October 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Hey look I got the first pick! But no Blazers on my team :(

Whoever has Roy, Aldridge or Oden email The Doleac. I am buying high on my home team. (Not Chris Paul-high, but, you know.)

Clay, Sunday, 26 October 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

can any of you confirm/deny whether these guys are actual espn.com fantasy hoops writers, b/c i couldn't stop laughing when i saw their faces juxtaposed today

circles, Sunday, 26 October 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

whoa

those guys should be arguing about old blues vinyl or maybe their warhammer models

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

leee tmac played 66 games last year so his cumulative stats took a bit of a hit, and his averages slipped just a little bit (not terribly so) plus his percentages were down a touch, overall it means he's kind of a steal if they click and he stays healthy (as always)

i caught him a few rounds earlier in like 04-05 i think when he played almost every game and had a monster (fantasy) season

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

sorry about the early draft cats...by the time i caught yr posts it was late sat/early sun - way too late to move it

we'll plan ahead a little better next year

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

but autodrafters it seems you only missed the opportunity to go for "steals" a little early (ie i reached about a round early for david lee based on the d'antoni pf-at-center stat boost theorem) or push guys you think will slump back a bit

i saw a couple of clever autodraft adjustments go by so good on ya m bison

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Atcha, hibachi.

Guys this is very important: "Wrecked Scooters" -- C/D? I think I need to give more thought into my team name.

Leee, Monday, 27 October 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

i like it! it boldly ignores the bad-pun-as-team-name rule that has worn out its welcome

i need a good team name, i spent my creative energy on the league name :\

schrödinger's googler (agent hibachi), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Aww, I love bad puns and am endlessly amused by BPATNs.

makin a motion to change to head to head

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

give it a couple of days the rest of regulars will show up...lets get to 8-12

maybe we should kick off an 09-10 thread once theres a quorum with a POLL? h2h or roto?

me in as long as you whiners promise not to cry when I have a lock on RESPECTABLE THIRD PLACE

mojitos (a cocktail) (Cave17Matt), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

the 4 years i have done this, i have placed 5, 9, 3, 2. 9th is the outlier, i feel i am poised for a win this year, especially since i plan on paying dwight howard to injure himself on a motorcycle 10 games into the season.

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

I'm in a pretty serious head-to-head league already this year (16 dudes deep, ugh, rosters are gonna be very thin) so I think I'd vote for the relatively relaxed roto format. Also I believe as reigning league champion my vote on this is extremely important.

Clay, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

I have been kinda burnt out on fantasy lately, but if you are in dire need of another warm body, I'll play.

xpost

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

im kind of in favor of doing a league with no bench, just gotta let the players you draft do they thing, no advantge for ppl who bother to set rosters properly every damn day (this does not feel like a skill to me, it feels like bureaucracy), but i do not know if i am eccentric billionaire over here on this issue

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

no that's kind of an interesting idea! and would certainly make trades / waiver issues more active.

Clay, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

Love this idea!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

maybe one spot for an injured guy?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

iirc yahoo has an option for an IR that can only be used for a guy tagged as injured by their system.

Clay, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

this ^^, maybe one or two IR spots for ppl to will t-mac to fantasy health?

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

never played roto before, always done H2H

my only thing is that turnovers should be a stat, otherwise some guy will draft durant and the entire GSW team and win the league

dyao, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

I've never played w/o TOs as a stat.

Clay, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

is h2h fun, or is there too much of an advantage for players who play more games during that week?

suggest friend (hmmmm), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

i wd assume that would balance out over the course of a season y/n?

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

love the idea of no bench tho

suggest friend (hmmmm), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 04:06 (sixteen years ago)

if we had enough players per team i would think sum1 playing only 1 or 2 games in a given week vs. some player playing 4 wouldn't matter too much.

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

my inclination is 12 players, 2 of each position plus two utility

categories i like: pts, totes reb, ast, to, ast/to ratio, blocks, stls, 3p made, ft%

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 13:39 (sixteen years ago)

Why would you do assists, turnovers, AND a/t ratio? And no point doing FT% without also doing FG%, otherwise it's just hatin' on the big men (no bowen).

mojitos (a cocktail) (Cave17Matt), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

ha didnt even notice i had both. i am almost inclined to defend that accident, but i'd be happier to just have ast/to ratio since i feel TOs as a standalone category seem to punish minutes played/guys who get a lot of touches.

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

in retrospect, dont know why i didn't include fg%. throw it in the bag.

chemical ali v. chemical frazier (m bison), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

so we gonna get this thing goin' or what?

Clay, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

we did a h2h on nba.com two years ago that i PWNED

Eff this revisionist jazz, I dominated the regular season but a rash of injuries at the most inopportune time gave you the championship in a closer-than-it-should've-been showdown.

Eh, same boat as poly, if you need another person, I might consider.

http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/onlyfive

I kinda misunderstood what the main league meant by "no bench" so here is one where you just pick five players, just PG/SG/SF/PF/C, nothing else! It is good if you know nothing about basketball, or don't want to ever do anything but check your team and lol. The draft is like 3 hours after the other one.
