Most ridiculously inappropriate NBA team name

Pick the most inappropriate NBA team name.

Many NBA names are silly, but the first two are really the only two serious contenders, imo, as they are both pure oxymorons. I will list the remainder - in no particular order - just to be sporting.

jelky (jergins), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

OKC Chunder !!

carne asada, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry Portland, but your team ought to be named the Oregon Trailblazers instead.

Leee, Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

It's amazing how many of them are either completely inappropriate (Jazz, Lakers, etc.), or just random (Warriors, Raptors)...

polyphonic, Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

Warriors is fine and doesn't seem any more random than USC Trojans or whatever. Jazz, Grizzlies, Clippers and Lakers are definitely the most randomly inappropriate, but I feel like they should get a pass because they originally made sense. Wizards is the stupidest, I think.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

In 1995, owner Abe Pollin announced that the franchise was to be renamed because Bullets carried violent overtones, which he wanted to repudiate,[1] especially since Washington was experiencing some of the highest homicide rates in the country at the time. A contest was held to choose a new name and the choices were narrowed to the Dragons, Express, Stallions, Sea Dogs, or Wizards.

okay now I really feel cheated, we could have had the Washington Sea Dogs?????

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

sacramento is not a monarchy nor was it ever

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

'washington express' is weird enough to be great

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

red sox aa affiliate is the portland sea dogs

888 (ice crӕm), Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

and gdamn if dc has the highest murder rate then that makes the bullets an appropriate name dont u see

888 (ice crӕm), Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Warriors is fine

Does it have any regional appropriateness or is it just random?

polyphonic, Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

i voted memphis btw

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

It has been too long since last season. In the meantime my fogbound brane forgotted the Bullets --> Wizards renaming farce. I am retro-embarrassed, especially because Wizards is among the silliest of all the silly names.

It coulda been a contender!

Aimless, Friday, 31 October 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

washington express stallions

6335, Friday, 31 October 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

gotta vote nets, it seems pretty stupid to be named after part of the equipment used

6335, Friday, 31 October 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

New Jersey Backboards

eman, Friday, 31 October 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

Is suggesting calling an NBA team out of the District of Columbia "the Dragons" or "the Wizards" a bit "off" or is it just me.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 31 October 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

Leee, Friday, 31 October 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

I thought everyone went "lol Klan" when the Wizards come up!
